That it will do, it will gladly scan a drive and/or an array and tell you what it can recover

Hard Dive Partitioning and performance question

With an NTFS partition, which is preferred in this case, will not matter whether you use a single 120GB or 2 separate 60GB partitions. My thinking however is, how fast is that older 30GB drive, 5400 or 7200 and if it's a 7200RPM drive, I would suspect only a 2MB cache. For performance reasons I'd most likely bag the old 30GB drive and only use the new 120GB drive, especially if it's the 8MB cache version

The demo only allows you to recover file sizes of 64k or smaller But you get the idea of how it works. They even have a Network edition so you can recover to a destination say on NAS/SAN or some other workstation or server share

    Better Cooling

Well I guess it depends on your definition of both. On my Asus motherboard, the Asus Probe software monitors both the CPU temp and the MB temp. There is no mention of Surface Temp anywhere, unless this is what you mean for the MB temp The CPU temp is the CPU Core temp, this is important if your core temp rises too high you will have random lockups and freezes. The newer motherboards will even shutdown for you, you can adjust the CPU Warning temp threshold in the System BIOS so the speaker will beep at you, but don't set it too low as in normal operation it could possibly hit this temp and start beeping at you.

A UPS can also be a hardware saver, especially when a brown-out occurs

You could try R-Studio, it's what I use and it works great, even on munged RAID Zero arrays

    Better Cooling

You only need apply a small amount to the bottom side of the heatsink, enough to make a thin layer of compound as it's designed to help fill in the gaps and provide for better heat transferring between the CPU and the sink If you have any stock fans, they usually come with a pad, best to carefully remove this and clean up any excess residue before applying the thermal paste.

    Better Cooling

Mine is currently running at about 41C/105F, it's an XP 2600+ running at 166MHz FSB. Here's how I added extra cooling to it, I looked at the heatsink, it's the kind with the copper slug in the center, good for better cooling then just aluminum only. I noticed that that fan doesn't turn faster then about 2400~2600 RPM. I have a bunch of extra Xeon fans however, these babbies run at about 6000 or so and move lots of air. Since both fans are 60MM and the original fan mounting screws are long enough, I decided to unscrew all 4 of them and then place the faster Xeon fan on top of the existing Athlon stock fan. I tried it both with just the Xeon fan and with both fans, it does make a difference to have them both on there

Windows 2003 Enterprise OR Windows 2003 Standard

Yep it would, but hey, I could see this happening when Longhorn gets released Also when you install the standard edition, it defaults to a 5 client connection, but since I always configure systems per seat, I don't use that option. We build them and configure this way cause we sell CAL's separately as well and really it should be up to the client to make sure they have purchased the correct amount of CAL's for their business...

    Poll! Worlds worst custom machine???

@Reidyn, If I remember correctly, Raveal always rebadged their products, I seem to recall they used to put a sticker over the chipsets like on their so-called Ensoniq Soundscape ViVo cards as well as some of the more generic Cirrus Logic and Analog Devices ISA cards Of course I still have a few older ISA cards lying around, I use them for testing mostly, but not too much of that either. I think I have a 256k VGA card that can be upgraded via empty RAM sockets... Now for a classic HD spotting moment: I have an old Seagate 3.5", SCSI-I drive, the true Half-Height models, runs at I believe 3600RPM and has an access time of 40ms. The old ST157N model, it's been dropped once or twice on the floor, a couple of small dents in the mounting bracket but it still works Last used in my Amiga 4000 thank you very much, still no bad blocks, other then the ones mapped out at the factory and the date of manufacture is 1988

    Poll! Worlds worst custom machine???

Pretty much any NLX based motherboard will suck so you can base it on one of these if you wish. I'm trying to get rid of a few left-overs myself, they are Asus motherboards but the NLX form factor kills them, also they are socket 370 which isn't too bad but only supports older Coppermines and below. To really mess things up here you can use the ISA slots on the NLX rider card, yes Riser card and throw on one of those Jean Luc Picard-Bell Sound Card/Modems, they usually were the Washington models with a Sound Blaster not very compatible sound chipset and an integrated Rockwell chipset for the 28.8 WinModem. I'll go with a P3-667 and DMI the bios so it reads the correct 666MHz instead Memory will be any cheapo PC100 DIMM, perhaps one of the Taiwanese brands that I came across with the other day, no name just Greek Symbols: Alpha + Omega Since the board does have onboard gfx we'll use that but to maximize the shared memory we'll be sure to limit the frame buffer size to 1MB even if it supports 8/16/32/64MB. It will only be a 32MB dimm as well, we don't want to spend more then a buck or two on the memory. Of course the onboard AC97 sound gets used, but we need to disable both the SB compatibility mode and the MIDI interfaces in the BIOS first. This should jack around with some game and/or music apps. As for the HD, I found some old recycled Conner 850 and 1GB drives, this should suffice for our purpose, we only want to use the older UDMA33 cables anyways correct. Since we don't want speed we'll disable the onboard IDE channels and go with an old generic 16-bit ISA controller. Be sure to setup the jumpers properly for all the com ports too cause we have to disable these on the motherboard as well. Now if the onboard graphics is too fast we can change that but adding a 1MB Cirrus Logic PCI card, since we just ran out of our two free ISA slots we'll use the only other slot available, the PCI slot. Now the os, I've decided on MS-DOS 5, yes 5 and Windows 3.11, not the Workgroup Edition however I've also decided that more HD space is needed but we're cheap right, so we decided on installing Stacker instead. That'll get a nice fat TSR going, sorry but we can't have QEMM installed on this box can we. Win 3.xx will only have the standard VGA driver installed for glorious 16 color VGA mode cause we can't figure out how to install the correct graphics drivers can we. Also we've decided to add Norton Desktop along with PC Tools Deluxe v7 so that means we had to add a 5.25" floppy drive as well and wouldn't you know it, we messed up the floppy cabling and can only get the config to work with the 5.25" drive as A: and the 3.5" drive as B: As for the case, well guess what, who has NLX cases anymore, we decided to use cardboard instead, I used zip ties to keep things bundled together and colored ones too so they look purdy As for the power supply, I found an old dented slimline case with a 145 watt PS, that should do, first I'll blow out the caked on woolys and grime, ah, a little 409 helps here. The CPU heatsink fan I scavenged from an old socket 5 P100 so that should work, the heatsink looks a little small and so does the 40mm fan but hey it should work just fine.

    just turns off....

How about the CPU fan ?!? Many motherboards will shut down if it dosen't detect the fan or the speed is below a certain threshold

    need drive imageing program

I'm afraid as far as 2K3 and any Windows Server flavor is concerned you'll have to get either the Enterprise Edition of Ghost from Symantec or the V2i product from Powerquest. Here's the real rub now however, Symantec just acquired Powerquest so I'm sure in a short time these competing products will merge

    Soundblaster problem, please help

Hasn't there been some issues with noise related to the PCI bus and VIA chipsets in the past ?!? It seems to me I read/heard about this and I couldn't remember if there was ever a fix or what ;( Since I've not actually had this problem before I can't really add any tips on what to look for but I would first check and make sure that you're running the latest VIA 4in1 service packs but only if you're running Win 2K or XP as VIA claims that they've been tweaked only for those OS's. For Win 9x you should only use up to v4.45 I do believe

    strange windows 2003 msg

That is the question isn't it, I really don't know but perhaps the fact that you are running W2K3 may have something to do with it I myself don't like nor want/use DRM but perhaps with this version of the OS you're forced/coerced into using it wether you like it or not and perhaps this is the result of using a non-Paladium enabled app. Could somebody with more .NET experience help on this one, anybody ?!?

    strange windows 2003 msg

This sounds an aweful lot like some sort of DRM (Digital Rights Managment) error message. I could be wrong but do you have Windows Media Player 9 installed and do you have the DRM enabled on it ?!? I'm sure somebody will have a better answer then me, I've never seen this one before. EDIT: I found more info on Microsoft's MSDN site. Seems to be related to web based apps or something like that. Error Code 1278 This may then have something to do with .NET/C# coding, not sure however

Was I too harsh on Ontrack (data recovery) ????

Perhaps sarcastic but in this case I think it's warranted. I think there are too many companies, not just those based in the USA, that attempt to be global when in fact they are not quite there yet. I have no respect for any company that uses a hotmail or any other free email service. They should have one for their own domain, such as ontrack.com ;(
  24. Weird, only because I can't recall having an issue like this 8) Since it's the same equipment but just a dual-boot OS config, I do that with my new gaming rig and it runs fine. Of course it's an Intel chipset rig, but my old one was a VIA/Athlon config and it ran fine with 98-SE, then an upgrade to Win 2K Pro then finally Win XP Pro. I build Windows boxes for a living and I also install all three OS's on varying chipset/cpu configs and haven't come across this kind of problem without it being hardware related.
