  1. Seems to me the default DHCP expiration time is 72 hours, but this could be different for each DHCP server. I'm also thinking that for some reason the persistent connection option is not working or works differently between a workgroup setting, like you currently have and a domain controller environment. Is the reason you don't have Win2k Server a cost savings matter or what ?!? Could be that you may want to go back to this kind of setting as it worked fine before.
  2. You're sure you disabled the Windows Messenger service and not the Instant Messenger app To verify, click on the Start button, then select Run and then type in services.msc followed by the OK button or the enter key. Now scroll down the list until you see Messenger. You want to stop the service if it's running and then change the startup type to disabled and not just manual. If it is already disabled then the pop-ups are coming from either java and/or activex scripts and they are meant to look like the messenger service notification windows. In this case some other background pop-up ad killer is needed.

    Good or bad computer deal

I agree on the mobo thing, some others that maybe suspect would be Matsonic, Amptron, ECS. Since they are only looking at a year, it may just be fine for that period of time

    Changing localhost IP

Ah, this is a little different then, here's a search on Microsofts Knowledge Base articles on IIS v6 and localhost. Not sure if any of them will help or not

    photos index?

Well I looked and what XP has is a customize option. You RM click on the folder and select properties. Then click on the Customize tab and select the option for your data files, in this case you should select Pictures (best for many files) and then click on the Also apply this template to all subfolders checkbox, then click on the Apply button at the lower right hand corner of this dialog box. I haven't tried to do a thumbnail hardcopy yet. This does work with my huge collection of... umm... well p0rn 8)

How can i burn cds that look like retail cds?

Just an FYI here, Yamaha has their own home/soho burners that use something they call DISCT@2 or Disc Tattoo Here's their external burner model, the CRWF1

    photos index?

I'm thinking that you mean a thumbnail print out of a folder with pics. Not sure if XP has something already built-in or not. When I get home I can check it out however.

    Lesson learned

As an OEM system builder I must say that AMD has addressed some of these cooling concerns. Some, perhaps all, are getting a new copper core heatsink/fan combo now. Just put together 3 machines with the XP 2400 in each, and they all had the same cooler. Seems to be running about 10C less, according the the onboard hardware monitoring. I do agree that I think 50C would be above normal, but I've seen P4's run around here as well. I guess it depends on the time of day or something

    Hating Windows XP, HELP!!!

Quote: How do i do that? Try what Xiven suggested first and let us know what happens. As for editing the hosts file, do a search for it, most likely under the system32\drivers\etc folder. You can use notepad or any other text editor to view and edit this file. Here's the default info in the hosts file. # Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost

    Hating Windows XP, HELP!!!

I know that you have to use that server in a public IP range for outside access et. al. but to make sure this is an issue with the address and/or subs try putting it behind the xDSL router and have it pull an IP address via DHCP. If this resolves the problem with the XP box then you know it has something to do with the addressing and not anything else. You may have to do some sort of static routes on the XP box, perhaps via the hosts file. I'm thinking you could put that static IP in there and see if this helps to view the server when it's on the public IP address.

    Hating Windows XP, HELP!!!

Yeap, that's right, hit me with a brick DOH!!! Anyways, do you have two NIC's in the server ?!? Cause the best thing to do is to have the server actually grab a DHCP address from the xDSL router as well. Unless you need/want to put it into a DMZ or some other special config. The two NIC's would allow you to bypass the xDSL router and provide ICS via Win 2K Server, but really I don't see a need for having the server outside of the local LAN do you ?!? This way you have the xDSL router, which I presume is providing a firewall as well, some protection to all the machines including the server. Here's my current home LAN config: RCA Cable Modem -> Linksys BEFSR41 xDSL/Cable Gateway, this includes a firewall/dhcp/nat server -> Aopen SOHO 8 port switch -> all local machines, this includes a combo Workstation/Server box, and about 5~7 gaming rigs and some general purpose boxes. Since the Linksys provides all the public or WAN side to local translations, all I have to do is to provide some port forwarding for some game server hosting. This box has a built-in web interface for local access and can be user/pass protected or not. Very easy to configure as well

    Converting wma to mp3

Quote: Quote: You can also turn off DRM in Windows Media Player as well. Look under the Tools -> Options menu then click on the Copy Music tab. Uncheck the Copy Protect Music box and there you go. Yeah, I realize that. I am sure that there are hurdles to go though to convert music with DRM to mp3s. I was just saying that I didn't need to address this. Ah, I see, you already have WMA files with DRM attached I remember forgetting to turn this off after my last reformat and reinstall and had to rip a few CD's again
  15. I have a LinkSys 4 port DSL/Cable Router, non-Wireless. I would not recommend a WAP at this time as they can be tricky getting them working properly. Since the machines are close enough to each other, get the ethernet RJ45 kind You'll connect either the xDSL modem or Cable modem to the LinkSys router and then out to both computers. Of course each machine will have to have it's own NIC, either onboard or a separate card. I would bypass using a hub whenever possible, instead use a switch if you need to add more connections, but since the LinkSys reouter can come in a single port, a 4 port or an 8 port version, this should do nicely for you

    Hating Windows XP, HELP!!!

Is this XP machine able to see other shares on the network ?!? I would create a dummy folder on a one of the 9x boxes and share it then create an empty file inside of this share. See if this shows up on the network for all the machines including the server. Now then, can I assume that all the machines are getting a DHCP address via the xDSL router then? Also all the machines are able to view the net via browsers, send/receive email etc. ?!? Also make sure that the XP machine is getting an IP from the same subnet and that the subnets are the same for each machine, usually they are 255.255.255.0. Anything else and this will cause some issues. One other thing to check, this has caused me some grief when it's installed. XP likes to install a QoS driver under the NIC properties. I either uncheck this or uninstall it altogether. This may or may not be an issue for you however. You shouldn't have to use NetBIOS/NetBEuI either, TCP/IP should be the only protocol you need to have installed and bound to the NIC. Oh, one other thing to check on the XP box, does the motherboard have a firewire port?!? If so then guess what, you get those network drivers installed as well and yes they can cause some issues too. Make sure the ethernet adapter is the first in line or ahead of the firewire or simply disable the firewire network.

Gigabit LAN not at full speed?

Hmm, ok, I guess I was mis-informed then. I thought the reason for having CAT6 was the extra shielding for these higher speeds, ala, the 80-wire cables for UDAM66/100/133 Something else I was thinking also is the Speed Selection under the device properties. Is it in the Auto position? Sometimes this has to be forced into a specific speed like 1Gbit/Full-Duplex instead.

    RAM

Perhaps so, I've come across quite a few 256MB modules that for whatever reason wouldn't work in older P2/P3 motherboards, however replacing them with double-sided PC66/PC100 memory modules worked fine. So I hate to nit-pick as well Saying it doesn't support double-sided is not a good description as many older SDRAM modules can be either single or double sided including newer 256MB memory modules, but these are usually DDR instead of SDR memory Now if you description of double-sided is different then what I interpret it as then that is where the mis-communication comes from...

    RAM

Here's the biggest thing to watch out for, if you install a new stick of memory into the machine and it only shows half the memory of that stick, then your motherboard may not properly support high-density ram modules. Check the motherboard manufacturer for a BIOS update to see if this resolves the problem. Do this only after testing the new stick of ram out. Also the tips about using a single 512MB module and about mixing different speed modules in the same machine are good but again you have to do some testing to see if this is the case with your particular setup. Also, you didn't mention the OS you're using, this will help determine the optimal amount of ram to use. For Win 9x up to 512MB without the vcache patch. For Win NT/2K/XP any amount you want, up to the maximum that the motherboard can address. With yours it could be listed as a maximum of 768MB in which case you can most likely only use 256MB memory modules. Check the user manual or the manufacturers website for more info on this.

    1 Win 2000 Pro & 2 Win 98SE PC on my LAN?

Here's an article on Slipstreaming the service packs into Windows XP, however you can just substitute Windows 2000 in it's place as it works just the same. I've used this to create slipstreamed SP3 into Win 2K Pro and it worked like a champ. Now I'll use the same procedure for SP4 as well. Slipstreaming

    Horror Stories

I never got a chance to do this myself after maintaining an NT4 domain. The now defunct ISP I used to work for was looking into migrating to Win 2k Servers/Workstations but we were bought out twice and the office closed before completing work on the proposal. I was hoping to get to work on something like this but never got the chance
