Quote: I would install better cooling, but I can't open the case cos it'll void my 2year waranty. It was enough pain to install a secod fan through the psu opening. It's like fixing your car's engine through the exhaust. This is why I prefer to build my own boxes, I can do whatever the hell I want to do with them I provide my own warranty so I also have to eat anything that I destroy as well As for the rise in temp from the PSU, it's because of the OC'ing. This causes more power consumption hence more heat from the PSU -
Yeah, many of the Cisco routers are setup to connect to a T1 or better connection on the WAN side. They usually have a CSU/DSU card in the expansion slot for this you can look for yourself and see. I suppose it could be swapped out for another 100Mbit card but I can't say for sure

Which 52x Burner is better? MicroAdvantage or I/O Magic

I haven't heard anything bad about LG drives myself and on occasion we even install a few into some new systems as well -

jmmijo replied to Christianb's topic in Hardware
Hmm, well I have two TDK Velo's, one is a slower 16x10x40 and the other is a faster 40x12x48 and they've worked flawlessly for me so far I've not owned a Plextor but everyone I've talked to that owns one said they've liked them. I also work for a company that sells Aopen hardware and most, if not all their CD-RW's have Ricoh circuit boards in them. Not sure if Ricoh actually makes them or what but of course like so much of the computer hardware now a days, it's made in Taiwan -
Personally I'd tell the offender to knock off the d/l or get their network connection terminated after hours. This person sounds like the worst kind of leech there is I bet they'd suck an OC192 dry Well off my soapbox now I suppose if you have a Cisco router, say even a 2600, you could do this but other then some kind of third party app installed on this workstation I can't really think of any other way to do this. Perhaps something on downloads.com could help you out: http://download.com.com/3150-2085-0.html?tag=stbc.gp

Tell you the truth, I'd spend the extra money on either a TDK Velo, my personal favorite or a Plextor. Of course if you're strapped for cash I think you may find that both of these are probably made by the same OEM so it doesn't really matter then Do they both have the same warranty period? This may make the difference in this case. -

Christianb, hey you have a great holiday weekend too and that goes for all my fellow American's out there as well Hope it aint too hot down in Sacto ATM. Been actually pleasent here in PDX for a change -
Yes I prefer to use only S-Video to S-Video and separate L-R audio patch cables. This is the best option for the best output until a good optical output gets developed for graphics cards

I've found that Microsoft has a lot of KB articles and I've tweaked my searches on it and can find most anything related to any of their products. I guess not many like to use their site but hey, they made the OS and so many of the apps that people are asking questions about, so why not go to the source

I do believe that NERO for one will turn off the Screen Saver until you close it, then it re-enables the screen saver to what had been set before hand. I know longer use screen savers as I turn down the brightness on my monitor now AlecStaar makes a good point about seeing if the app will stay on top and/or refreshes periodically. I think you may need to disable the screensaver while you using the player however

or if you prefer, DIMM1 + DIMM3 for the first pair then DIMM2 + DIMM4 for the second pair As for linear mode, not sure. Could be the terminology used by the mobo manufacturer.
-
That mobo has the onboard 3com Gigabit NIC. What chipset is the secondary PCI card? Also you say you're not using a switch, so do you have both NIC's connected to a hub then? One thing I've seen on occasion is that if you leave the media connection type on automatic, this can sometimes cause some connection issues like this. This is a setting under the NIC properties so you can check there for the current setting, which is usually set to auto by default, and try to change it to say 10Mbit/Half-Duplex and see what happens. Another option is to try to uninstall the onboard NIC via Device Manager then reboot and have it redetect again. One other thing to note, see if there is a QOS Packet Service installed, if so, uninstall and/or disable this service. I've seen this cause problems too.

Not sure if this KB article is related but it seems close to me, take a read and see if it is or not. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317437

Internet Explorer showing up as old?! WTF!

Quote: Hi That's what I am trying to to. I have the Draytek Vigor 2600We. Any suggestions? Thanks. Mak Not familiar with that one, I personally use the Linksys BEFRS41 model. There's even a nice built-in web interface as well -

I prefer Zone Alarm myself, but I use this in conjunction with a hardware firewall/nat/dhcp router as well -
And who says tech people don't have people skills
jmmijo replied to sapiens74's topic in Slack Space
I can see special meetings before or after the show, but since it's a public show then the public should be able to see the new hardware. There wasn't any indications of any NDA's that can put a damper on things so it is a dis-service to everyone -

Any error code that gets reported to you or no ?!? This may help to narrow down the issue as well. -
This is why I prefer an ATi graphics card for DVD playback on a computer. Just has the best DVD decoder out there as far as I'm concerned This allows you to not have to use a secondary DVD decoder card which I think adds to the video noise level. The nVidia chipsets are catching up however

Hey Dosfreak? Got any tips on which services to disable?
jmmijo replied to pr-man's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: This is one of the areas in which Linux Excels. Why MS doesn't do this? Your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps to distingusish their product from Linux they go for a "Less options is better approach" on install for less confusion. Yes I noticed that when I install Red Hat it asks me what kind of machine to setup for, this is nice @pr-man, depends on the kind of box you're running. I would however turn off *all* file/printer sharing for sure. I myself also shut off *all* the auto updates and the remote desktop/registry services. Why tempt the hands of fate -
There should be a corresponding user with the name steve under that parent folder. In fact all users that have logged onto that machine should have their own sub-folder with their user name. You're positive that the user "Steve" is actually not user "Steve$" ?!?

jmmijo replied to pr-man's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Speaking of tweaks and such, this kind of goes OT a little but I was wondering why there isn't a setup option/switch that allows you to install either Win 2K or XP for different platforms. For instance choose an install geared towards Gaming or a Graphics Workstation ?!? If there is such a thing, then I think this would be nice to have BTW - both you DosFreak and you AlecStaar do a great job helping out on this forum, not sure how many users thank you for it but I'm thanking you both for it right now -
I do believe this is because Power DVD doesn't support the Creative DVD decoder board. Now it's possible that there is a patch for Power DVD to do this so check out there site just in case. http://www.gocyberlink.com/english/download/download.jsp

Quote: 64-bit? I don't need it... who does? Databases & large scale multimedia application is the only REAL use for it I can see, & I don't do that at home... who does? APk I don't know when it will happen, but what would be interesting is if game coders could find a way to use the extra CPU registers in 32-bit mode. I remember back in the day that there were a few enterprising coders for the C128 that was able to hack into the second CPU, this was a faster Z80, for extra things run in the background. Wish I could remember the apps, but there were very few of them for sure Perhaps there will be something akin to HT on the Athlon64's, who knows -

Yeah, well I just needed something until about the October timeframe I'll be looking at getting a 2.6c or a 2.8c P4 CPU soon but not until I get the DDR400 memory. Kind of need that first or at the same time
