I use WinRAR and sometimes WinACE on occasion

As DOSFreak mentioned, I'd also try out a test box with Win 2K Pro on it with Virtual PC running a DOS machine and see if that helps out. I'm thinking that if you have a 100Mbit switch and NIC's this will help out with reducing your packet collision. This may or may not be a factor in your current setup however. You'll have to do some experimenting and see

The: What Computer Part did you buy this week thread

Since yesterday was payday and I had to get something, I decided to get an interim graphics card until Doom III/Half-Life 2 come out I purchased an A-bit Siluro FX 5600 DT 256MB card. It's not the fastest nor the slowest card on the block but it's supports AGP 8x on my Canterwood board 8) BTW, I work for a local Aopen Distributor on the left coast and have been testing an engineering sample of their latest Canterwood motherboard, the AX4C Max II. This is a really nice board, it does correct the issues that the initial board had, which were corrected via BIOS updates, but the only thing I'm gonna let Aopen America know about is the space between the P4 CPU socket and the DIMM's sockets. They re-arranged the CPU socket so it's a bit closer to them now and my Zalman copper flower bloom actually touches the module in DIMM slot 1. Since I have heat spreaders on the modules there's no real problem but it's pretty darn close -
couldn't open partition to check signature

Have you tried using PM8, the rescue boot disks option yet? I use this at work and at home for problem HD's like this. Once booted via the rescue disks, you can check the disk info and file system for errors and such. If need be you can do a quick or full format in many different file systems as well -
This KB article seems to be about as close I can come to finding you a solution http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;103125 Perhaps another search of Microsoft's KB engine maybe in order I don't think it requires that TCP/IP be installed but have you tried it to see?!?

I leave mine main workstation/station on 24/7. This is because I'm usually doing something during my sleep time as well as I leave Outlook running all the time. I also use a UPS so I don't really worry about it but really I think it's a personal choice now a days. Other then a CRT monitor, the electronics is pretty well protected from surges that always occur during a cold start but cold starts are not like the old AT days as the soft power off actually has some power still going to the power supply and possibly a few other components on the motherboard.

ICS is supposed to let you do the same thing, I myself have never gotten this funtion to work properly but it was more an experiment for my own knowledge then for any real world application. I'll have to note that app for future reference, thanks duhmez

Quote: Unplug everything from the mobo except ram, keyboard, graphic card, monitor and cpu. Still nothing. Did you try to reset cmos? Replace the batery. Some mobos won't boot if they don't have a working battery. Try another cpu or mobo. I find it best to even remove the gfx card and the ram, so you have just the mobo, cpu and power supply only. Then see if you do get a beep code outta the the mobo. If so, does it give a standard post code of either no gfx card or no ram installed error. If so then you plug in either the gfx card or the ram and repeat the process. I've found many a bad/flaky stick of ram that would not allow the mobo to post properly when installed.

Open a command prompt via Start/Run and type in cmd. Now use the ipconfig /release to make sure the IP is gone and then ipconfig /renew to refresh it again As for the reason your connection drops, could be the dynamic IP config and the VPN router. Is there some sort of timeout on this box that does this after an idle period perhaps ?!?

Quote: Any major fixes for it? I hear sp1 just messed everything up. Yes I heard about this too but I've not come across any issues myself

Doesn't Frontpage support .htaccess files or am I wrong about this? I thought this was a standard way of password protecting web sites ;(

Quote: I agree. Hulk would win. He could just crush the Terminator into a billion pieces. The second Terminator would be a bit more challenging but I think he could think of something such as throwing him into deep space or something like that. A volcano should work nicely too

Quote: single stick of 512 in my pc3200 rig my new rig - i just got another 2.4 has 2 x 256 pc2100 just got a 2.4a (400mhz) upto 3.2 on air Yeah I noticed that, nice Myself I'm looking to get a matched pair of Dual Channel sticks for my Canterwood board. Been looking at the Corsair TwinX and the Kingston HyperX kits. Seems the Corsair sticks are better for overclocking for sure Also, I picked up one of the Zalman Solid Copper Flower Blooms for my rig. Comes standard with a generic 92mm fan but you can easily stick on a 120mm fan as well. Forget about the speed controller, don't you want a cooler running CPU

Quote: shake your winkie OWE! shake your winkie OWE! got my 2.4 upto 3.2 stable now! Nice, now I've got a question. Your specs list your gaming/overclocking rig with 512MB of RAM. Do you use a single stick of ram or a matched pair of Dual-Channel sticks? I've run across more problems tweaking and overclocking when using multiple sticks of ram then a single stick

VIA also recommends using the latest Hyperion drivers for only Win2K/XP as they are optimized for these OS's. They recommend v4.45 as the latest release that was optimized for Win 9x OS's

Quote: No. The audigy cannot do this. Only the NFORCE motherboard can "encode" directsound 3d into 5.1 Dolby Digital. I think Dolby charges $25/motherboard - that would prohibit a $70 soundcard from having that license. Well if this is the case, some of us, I would imagine, wouldn't have any problems paying a little extra to have this feature on the Audigy, or even an the Audigy 3 when it comes out As for me, I just payed for a great Sennheiser set, the HD497 model. They beat the crap outta my old Koss pair

Quote: HELP! I've just lost my primary slave drive (Western Digital 120GB) and I didn't have a backup for it yet. I've partitioned it but didn't format it back to NTFS yet. Is there a way to restore all the files on a hard drive after partitioning or formatting? Or reconstruct the files on another drive? Here's some software that has helped me recover from a RAID Zero array, now, not every file was recovered, but most of them were http://www.r-tt.com/

TESTING WHY A WINDOWS API CALL FUNCTION IS A SWEAR HERE!

Quote: Not sure if it will happen here, but at another board I was talking about a Terry Pratchett book called Nightwatch. That got cenosered because there's a kind of rude word in the middle of it No problems here though. Horrah Yeah, I see it too but what is going on if boards are doing nothing more then playing anagrams with what we happen to write on them -
Stuck using Riva 128ZX under winxp for a few days...help
jmmijo replied to pr-man's topic in Hardware
I didn't find an XP driver on nvidia's site either, just for Win 9x and NT http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=riva_drivers -
Quote: That would be kind of difficult consdiering nForce2 boards typically only have 3 RAM slots and only 2 can be used if you want to get full performance from dual-channel mode. Hmm, I thought they were going to go to 4 DIMM slots on these boards. Now I should have guessed having bulit a few using this same ASUS board. I now remember it having only 3 DIMM slots so a matched pair is the best you can do

Quote: a very good suggestion. we are testing a server with windows server 2003. we do not have a hardware raid controller, but i may want to look at the software raid. I have never done that and i don't know how it works. That is a very good suggestion. Thanks. You have to use Dynamic Drives for one thing, let's see what article number Microsoft has on this... Go to the Microsoft KB page: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto And search for dynamic drive and you should come up with plenty of matches. One thing however, there seems to be a problem with the current versions of drive imaging software out there, i.e., Drive Image and Ghost that can not copy Dynamic drive volumes I've heard there are going to be some updates soon to resolve these issues. Personally I prefer to use a hardware RAID, more flexible. In fact my newest controller is the Promise SX6000 which supports RAID 0 thru 5 plus JBOD as well, quite handy indeed

Quote: cool, thanks for the help You're welcome.

If needing them on a HD is required then may I suggest either a RAID 1 (mirroring) or a RAID 5 array be the answer. This way you can replace any defective drives as it happens. RAID 5 gives you the best of RAID 0+1 with parity

Another option is to look at either a DVD-RAM or DVD+RW drive as these have become much cheaper now, especially the internal ATAPI versions You could also look into an internal TAPE drive solution but I find that the media costs our much more expensive then even the media for a DVD-RAM or DVD+RW solution. Here's another nice thing about most of the DVD recorder solutions, they support CD-R and CD-RW media as well Remember that a HD is still a mechanical device, it's more prone to failure due to moving parts and thus media like CD/DVD is great for archival purposes.
