Sure, you could have some major filesystem issues and/or the OS system files have gotten corrupted. This could be caused by Windows simply barfing on itself causing the corruption or a sign of some hardware failure, such as the HD and/or the RAM. I would first run a full chkdsk by opening up the propertied for you C: drive and click on Tools then Error Checking. Be sure to check both boxes for Automatically fix errors and Scan for and Attempt Recovery. The program will say it needs to schedule a scandisk on the next startup, have it do this and then reboot the OS and watch for when that 93% scan comes into play. Which Pass is it on, there will be 5 different passes or checks, so if it's on the 3 of 5 passes then it's on the third check portion.

You're right, you shouldn't have to be forced to upgrade, however, I do see where Microsoft would want to limit what kinds of new apps/features you have access to on a Legacy OS so they can sell more of their new OS's. I mean if many/most users knew how to hack things like IE7/WMP11 to run on Win 2K, why would they want to both upgrading their current OS ?!? But I'm also a Microsoft whore to some degree, I like messing about with their latest and greatest software/apps etc to see what it does and if it's something I will be getting when it's released. Mostly this is due to my job in that I'm a system builder and need to know these things and how they work with the hardware systems I build

I'm going to guess that Natedude's machine is the much older Socket 370/P3 motherboard without even an AGP slot as it uses the IGP 810 series chipset. He may or may not have any free PCI slots as well due to most likely having a micro-ATX motherboard. So I would recommend checking inside your machine first Nate and verify if you have a single PCI slot available or not. If so then you will want to look for a PCI card, not an AGP or PCI Express as these will not work.

I understand your fustration, however, since Microsoft now considers this a LEGACY OS then what else should they do from a business standpoint ?!? Not that I wouldn't mind if their new software releases would work on Win 2K as I think it's a pretty darn good and stable OS, but at some point the support factor has to stop and the company needs to move forward with their future products.

Sorry no, I use Microsoft Keyboards and Logitech Mice and I don't even use the Logitech software as I have a KVM switchbox. Other then looking in the Mouse Control Panel Applet, I can't see any other place to adjust the acceleration settings.

Have a great new years everybody

I personally use Maxthon as my primary web browser, it has tabbed viewing and all the pop-up blocking you would need plus it's based on the IE core so the compatibility is very high with those web sites requiring IE5+ to work with Download Here!

It may, so you should actually find an SP2 install media CD or simply create your own SLIPSTREAM install disc...

Glad to hear that, nice work

I just went to Gigabyte's website and noticed this motherboard is based on an SiS chipset. Well with my experience I've had both good and bad luck with this chipset manufacturer. Some of their models seem to work flawlessly and others are not quite so good. Hope the drivers resolve your issue otherwise I would recommend getting a third party USB card for using external USB devices.

Did you install the latest chipset/inf drivers for your motherboard yet ?!? This means if your motherboard is based on a Intel chipset, then you should d/l the latest INF drivers from their website and reboot after installation and try this USB device once again. Also, I'm assuming you are using one of the onboard USB ports and not a third party controller card, correct ?!? If not then you need to go to that cards manufacturers website and make sure they don't have some proprietary drivers for your OS...

That would be a good thing, if the ram module still works why not keep recycling it into other boxes As for the firmware update, at this point I would say just leave the single 1GB stick in this machine and transfer over that 256MB module to the other box.
-
Most likely the CPU you are using has a FSB (Front Side Bus) frequency that is in synchronous mode with the speed of the memory. This is normal and will have no effect on the new memory module. However, since you can only see a total of 1GB of ram, I would check your motherboard manual for specs that detail the largest capacity module you can use and how much memory total the chipset can see. It's also possible that your motherboard may need to have it's firmware flashed to resolve this issue as well.

I agree with the suggestions from danleff

Well, you can just run a whole surface scan under scandisk: 1) Open My Computer and right-mouse click on the local drive, normally this is the C: drive. 2) Select Properties and then click on the Tools tab and select the Error Checking option, Check Now button. 3) Make sure to check the boxes marked Automatically fix filesystem errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This will require you to schedule a scan on the next boot cycle, click yes and reboot the machine. This process can take awhile so go grab a cup of joe or you favorite beverage and do something else while this is being done

Well, here in the states DVD-RW drives are pretty darn cheap, yes 3 years is more then your monies worth at this point
-
I've noticed that too with Asus, some of the mirrors however work much better for me so I try the US first then move to Global and so on.... Good luck with your new hardware

Correct, capacity is why, the onboard ICH7 will support up to (4)Four sata drives and I beleive the same amount for that Marvell controller. However, nothing says you have to enable the Marvell controller, you most likely can disable that device in the CMOS Setup.
-
I would verify you have the latest chipset/inf drivers and also the latest graphics drivers for this motherboard. Also, do you use the onboard graphics on this motherboard or a separate graphics card ?!? It could be that some games just will not work properly with onboard or igp graphics.
-
That would be the REPAIR installation where it picks up the currently installed OS and over-writes the system/support files for said operating system. Be sure they do a full WindowsUpdate for at least the Critical Security Updates as well I personally do a complete update of all the files for the device drivers as well, this includes the Graphics, Sound, Chipset, DirectX, etc....

It appears you have Daemon Tools installed. Try booting into safe mode and uninstalling this app first and reboot the machine after uninstalling it and see if this works for you. If not, then possibly a repair install of the OS would resolve this issue, otherwise you most likely will want to backup any important data and then reformat the HD and reload a fresh install of the OS. Another option would be to get an external USB enclosure for this HD and then purchase a new HD for installing a fresh copy of the OS onto. This way you can access your old data/files from the external USB drive
