    STOP: c000021a HUGE PROBLEM !!!!!!!

Sometimes it's easier to purchase a new HD as these devices are now dirt cheap and install a new copy of your OS from the install media onto this new drive. Be sure to remove the old HD first before doing this !!! Once you have the new OS installed, be sure to first get the latest OS patches and updates, install Anti everything on it, both spyware and virus apps. I like Spybot - Search and Destroy, AdAware PE, AVG Anti-Spyware/Virus and even the Microsoft Windows Defender is a nice app to use. Once this has been done then get an external enclosure for your original HD, either IDE or SATA depending on the type of drive it is and connect this up to a free USB port and access your files you want to recover. After doing this you should archive your data to an optical disc and then reformat that external drive. Now you have an external and portable storage device

    LAG!!

So does this actually occur when you disconnect from the broadband modem and only play Counterstrike as a LAN game/server ??? Basically do you have more then one machine that you could setup one box with a Counterstrike server and another as the client. I realize you will not connect to your Ventrilo server but what you want to check out is wether there is indeed some excess network traffic on the WAN side of things in relation to your ISP vs. your friends ISP If your LAN ping times are very low, which they should be then that seems to indicate some sort of WAN/Internet traffic routing issues. Try using a tracert to both the Vent server IP and the Counterstrike server. Do this a few times to get a good average delay time and how many hops to get there. Also note if any * show up as this denotes timeouts which will indeed cause delays. I personally have seen weird and wild ping times while connected to my clans Vent server and playing Lineage 2 at the same time

    Unable to install patches

Hmm, seems that my brother has been infected with malware to the extent that some of this crap can't be removed with Spybot nor even Adaware PE The other annoying thing is that I can't install any of the latest security patches for the OS, XP Home as when I attempt to install them the machine spontaneously reboots to keep this from happening. Perhaps there is a rootkit installed as well, guess I need to find out what is happening and post more comments on what I've found....

So this is what I ended up doing, however, this time I d/l the free versions of AVG Anti-Spyware/Virus for him as well as having AdAware PE/Spybot/Windows Defender on there too. Man this sounds more like a cocktail for a computer with AIDS now

    CPU fan

Not quite, what is the make and model of your CPU ?!? There are a number of third party manufacturers out there that most likely will have a replacement for your CPU.

    DOS Partition

Isn't there a compatible version of DOS that does support larger partition sizes and long filename support ?!? But of course MS-DOS only supports FAT16 partitions

    i can't play online

You should ask your network administrator and see if they would be willing to open the ports you need to do this. However, are you trying to do this from your home connection or is this on a campus in a dorm room ?!? If on a campus then most likely these are filtered/closed for security reasons and I'm not sure if you can even use a proxy server or not...

Return to Krondor & Betrayal in Antara- can't play

Man that series brings back some nice memories, I have them all on Floppy/CD too However, I've not installed and played with them for many years now, I've not dug out my old DOS box to play with them I bet however that dosfreak has a great solution for you on this one

Accton Network card driver for Novell Netware

I didn't see a Novell driver for this NIC, however, if you contact them via their webform they maybe able to help you. Otherwise I would say try a Google search and see what shows up.
  10. Not to be sounding cold, why not just go out and purchase a new DVD reader and/or a DVD-RW optical drive, they are dirt cheap, less then $50(USD) for a DVD-RW model and less then $30(USD) for a reader

    Dual-booting: is this correct?

So I would say if you really need to create more then (4)Four Primary patitions on a single HD, then you have to create the remainder as an Extended partition/partitions instead
  12. LOCKED should be the preferred method in that you archive the thread and it's still logged by all the freaking spiders on the net, like Google

    Dual-booting: is this correct?

I was not aware of a limit of only (4)Four Primary Partitions but I suppose you can only try it and see if this works or not. I can't see any issues in that you can always use the Disk Management tools in either Win 2k or XP to manually re-assign the drive letter except the partition you booted up into
  15. Simple answer, NO. The CPU is too slow really run Win 2K Properly with any speed. However, this should run Win NT 4, Win 95 and possibly do ok with Win 98, but really this system is just too underpowered to run this kind of OS. You should also be able to run many distro's of *nix as well

Anyone using iTunes on a PC?

I've tried using iTunes, basically since I don't own an iPod I have no reason to use it so I uninstalled the app. I do however use just the Quicktime Media Player which you can d/l by itself without iTunes. I do however prefer to use Windows Media Player and the new version that comes with Vista seems pretty nice too. I basically just d/l the Cole2k Advanced CODEC Pack and this pretty much supports everything I need including LOSSLESS decoding like FLAC and APE

No sound on laptop. Broken soundcard?

First I would reboot the machine and check if the notebook has a BIOS Setup option, normally I see the F2 key for laptops. Once inside the BIOS settings, look for the Integrated Peripherals section and verifiy that the onboard SOUND sometimes called AC97 Sound is enabled. If so, then save and exit the BIOS and boot into SAFE MODE for your OS, usually the F5 key during the initial boot phase. Now check the Device Manager and verify if the drivers are installed for the sound device installed on that notebook, check the manufacturers website for tech specs and what is installed. Commonly used AC97 chipsets are Realtek, C-Media, Analog Devices and Sigmatel. Once you can verify if this driver is installed, make sure it's not installed more then once and/or other types of AC97 drivers are installed from a different manafacturer. You should be able to uninstall these even in SAFE MODE and then reboot the machine back into normal mode. There you should d/l and install the latest drivers from either IBM/Lenovo's website or from the OEM that makes the sound chipset.

I don't see why not, however, I do not personally use any FAX software via ethernet. Hopefully some others can say for sure

Possible to still get WinXP Pro?

Well I still like using Win 2K Pro, it works well for many things on my end, since I dual-boot with Vista RC2 on one of my machines, I can test things out on both OS's to see what does and does not work properly

Possible to still get WinXP Pro?

@Packman, I see that list and I've not had time to test all these, except Office 2000 Pro, it wouldn't load for me and I had heard that Office 2000 wouldn't be compatible with Vista I can test out other apps/games that you have listed, if I have them that is I can post my findings when I test them as well...

Possible to still get WinXP Pro?

I've been BETA testing Vista for awhile now, and other then the ATi graphics drivers having some major issues, nothing else has had any, including the drivers for my Silicon Image 2-port SATA controller. However, I've not tested out a lot of apps as of yet, some testing has been done with the following apps however: Lineage 2 Ventrilo L2J Server Sun Java SDK 5
