  1. I did a search for this in the forums, but came up empty handed. Does anyone have a link to the 1.2 Beta patch for Viper Racing? I am trying to get it to run under Windows XP, but not having much luck with the sound. All help is greatly received. Thanks. MF

Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...

After weeks of looking, I think I FINALLY found the 1.2 patch. I am at work right now, and can't test it, but I will share w/ everyone else in case you are having the same audio problems with Viper and Windows XP. I wonder if there will be any compatibility issues w/ Viper 1.1 and 1.21....maybe someone can post for us and let us know. Anyhow, here is the link to it: Code: http://www.geocities.com/Skyfrog74/viper121beta.zip It's on a Geoshitties site, so you have to copy n paste that link into your browser. Here is what the "readme.txt" says: Quote: Viper Racing BETA Patch 1.2.1 README.TXT This is a totally unsupported BETA patch for Viper Racing to allow it to run under Windows 2000 and use multiple controllers. There is also a tweak to the sound system that may fix sound problems people have running in Windows XP. Some sound problems may also be fixed by setting "compatibility_mode" to "yes" in the [sOUND] section of options.cfg. So far this patch has only been tested on a couple of machines, both running GeForce 2 cards and Windows 2000 Service Pack 1. NOTE! we have had one report of problems running this with Service Pack 2, so don't get your hopes up too much. We don't have service pack 2 installed anywhere in the office yet, so I can't test it there, but if we do I will look into it then. We have had more recent reports of success with Service Pack 2, so the Service Pack 2 thing may be a red herring. This patch has no installer, so you must manually copy the files "Viper Racing.exe" and "race.bin" into the appropriate folders on your install directory. You can verify that the patch was installed correctly by going to the Options screen in Viper Racing--the text in the lower-right-hand corner should read "v1.2.1 BETA" This version can read from multiple game controllers; you should be able to use any joystick axis or button in the Controls screen, although the display of controls that aren't on the first joystick may look a little cryptic. You can see which controllers are visible to Viper in the "TUNE" menu; if a device isn't showing up, make sure that it is properly configured in the Windows Game Controllers control panel applet. As always, make sure that you've calibrated all controllers in Windows, even though their calibration procedure sort of blows, frankly. Keep in mind that using multiple controllers will add extra CPU overhead to read both controllers, so make sure you don't leave any controls mapped to a device that you aren't using. Force feedback is determined by whichever controller is mapped to the "steer left" control. Also, the "free shift" controls are now remappable in the UI, which should make it easier to use the ACT Labs GPL shifter (USB)--you'll have to assign each gear yourself. When assigning gear controls, shift into neutral, click on the appropriate gear control, shift into gear when prompted, and then return to neutral. There is a gear indicator on below the steering indicator that will let you test out your shifting. Good luck! -Dave Pollatsek MGI Best of luck everyone, and happy racin. -=The Modfather=-

Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...

Yep...pretty much sux man. I have decelerated the sound card both in the game and thru Direct X. Then I decided to get slick and turn down the graphics to 512x384 and turn off ALL of the eye candy. Same jittery sound. It actually sounds like the car has a flat tire or something. At this point, I am going to chalk it up to OS incompatibility and move on I guess. Thanks a ton for all your efforts, and if anyone DOES come across a "beta" patch for Viper, LMK!

Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...

Quote: Hey, try this to fix the sound: Try setting your sound configuration (in the game) to it's simplest settings (ie, no 3D sound, etc.) If that doesn't work, try this: Click Start, Run, type in DXDIAG, click OK, Click the Sound tab, slide the acceleration adjustment to all the way to the left. If this works, try exiting the game, launching DXDIAG and sliding sound acceleration one notch to the right. Keep doing this until you know the highest sound acceleration you can use with it still sounding good. Well, no luck there. I guess I am gonna have to just build a 98 box for my racing games. Seems like such a waste tho....hehe....

Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...

Sweet deal man! I can get it to work, but for some reason the sound is very choppy and chunky. Here are my system specs: P4 2.0 NW Abit TH7II-RAID 384 megs RDRAM (PC800) Gainward GF3 SoundBlaster Live! Intel 10/100 NIC Some HDD's and stuff OS: Windows XP Pro The OS is patched to the latest and greatest Microsoft has to offer, and I have used DirectX 9 Beta in the past, but reinstalled XP since then.

Yes, have tried 1.1, and a virtual plethora of other tweaks and software hacks. I have even tried DirectX 9 Beta, but no luck.

Viper Racing 1.2 Beta Patch - can't seem to find it...

Quote: Try this. Hi ConQueso. First of all, thanks for the reply! Unfortunately the ACT software didn't seem to solve the issues I was having w/ Viper Racing. The reason I figured I needed the 1.2 patch is becuase of what I saw here. Quote: Working very well with XP, use 95/98 compatibility layer, and with soundproblems try unofficial 1.2 Beta patch! I have searched NTCompatible for the patch, as well as google, hotbot, and a few other search engines, but wasn't able to uncover anything other than a few mis-labelled adult sites. Again, thanks for the effort!!! -=Modfather=-
