Which is the Best MMORPG out there?

Well, the topic kinda says it all I need suggestions for a FREE MMORPG. I am willing to pay for the software but I don't think my wallet could handle any subscription fees I've heard rumors that Phantasy Star Online has no subscription fees. Is that true? (I guess it doesn't really matter because I can't find an original PSO for the PC game in online stores or in real life ;( ) I've already found party members, all I need now is a good game Thanks in advance!

    Fallout + Wine

Hiya. I was wondering if some of you could help me out. Since I discovered that Fallout doesn't have that annoying fade-in/fade-out problem with wine as it did with cedega, I've been trying to get it to work properly and I've almost succeeded. I only have one problem left that I can't solve for the life of me. I use KDE and whenever I try to run fallout with wine, the resolution changes, the game starts, BUT the KDE Kicker remains at the bottom. How do I configure wine to make that go away? It's really huge in 800x600, not to mention annoying. Ideas? Suggestions? Oh, one other thing. Wine keeps scanning my floppy drive whenever I use it. Could anyone tell me how to disable that too? If not, no problem, it's only a minor problem. Thanks in advance!
  3. Hello there. I'm having a little problem with my sound. I'm running Mandrake 10.0 and I have ALSA 1.0.7 installed. My sound card is Hercules Muse XL. The problem I have is that the sound seems a bit, well, wrong! It's like the bass is cranked to the max or as if I had extremely dusty speakers. Any ideas what I should do? I know the card is fine, because it played alright in Windows, but there is no way in hell I am installing that again (recently had an..."unkind" experience with Windows and IE)! Thanks in advance!

I've had it with NAV 2004!

I'll make this short: I hate the damn thing. I've been having some strange disk problems for a while. When I deleted something from my HDD, there was no increase in free disk space, even when I deleted a couple of gig worth of files! I didn't realize this until a few hours ago, but the problem started occuring about the same time I installed Norton Antivirus 2004. Lately, I got fed up with it poking into things I didn't want it to scan, even though I TOLD IT NOT TO! So, I uninstalled it and surprisingly, no more disk space problems. Yay for me. But now I have another problem: You guessed it, no antivirus. I need a highly configurable one, one which will preferably remember its settings. My friends suggested the following: McAfee VirusScan Professional NOD32 and Avast! Antivirus I've never used any of them and I've only heard of McAfee, so I'd be really happy if someone told me which one is best (It doesn't neccessarily have to be on the list, just don't say Norton ) Thanks in advance! P.S.: Since I'm here: Another one of my less computer-litterate friends needs an AV for his P166. It's ancient, I know Well, he needs one that won't kill his puter when he runs it (aka not hardware-hungry). Thanks again!

I've had it with NAV 2004!

I just HAD to do it, didn't I? It's Vermyn's story all over again. Among the antivirus programs I've tried was McAfee's VirusScan. Wasn't pleased with it, so I uninstalled it. No big deal, right? WRONG! Now every time Windows boot up I get an error: "Cannot get getaddrinfo from the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll" or something like that and the program who's causing this is called 2003121222929_mcinfo.exe . I looked the program up via Ad-Aware's logs and this is what I got: Code: #:15 [2003121222929_mcinfo.exe] FilePath : [censored] ThreadCreationTime : 21.12.2003 22:51:49 BasePriority : Normal FileSize : 312 KB FileVersion : 4, 3, 0, 10 ProductVersion : 4, 3, 0, 0 Copyright : Copyright CompanyName : Networks Associates Technology, Inc FileDescription : McAfee SecurityCenter Update Info InternalName : McInfo OriginalFilename : McInfo.exe ProductName : McAfee SecurityCenter Created on : 12.12.2003 1:29:29 Last accessed : 21.12.2003 22:51:29 Last modified : 26.8.2003 17:37:16 Why me? I tried manually deleting the twisted little thing by going to the path given in the log, but the folder isn't there! Dammit, where does this thing keep coming from? Anyway, McAfee's off my list. Well, maybe on my BLACKlist, but that's another story Going to try Kaspersky's AVS next. Cheers! P.S.: How'd this end up being a car engine topic? ;(

Anything better than Quake 3 and UT 2003 in the FPS Genre?

My FPS faves that you also might enjoy are: - Jedi Knight Series (Jedi Knight, Mysteries of the Sith, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy). Hey, what did you expect? Look at my nick - System Shock 2 <- A better game has yet to be made. It has some RPG elements too. Similar to Deus Ex, but IMO better. - Clive Barker's Undying. thatsteveguy knows what he's talking about! - Aliens versus Predator series. The last two games are best played at night. 8)

    Mystery system tray icon

Hey, Christianb. Nah, it isn't visible at all times, only when you open a video file and I think it disappears immediately if it doesn't find multiple audio streams or subtitles, which I think is what is happening to Alien. Although I can't figure out why it pops up when he only moves the cursor over a file. Greets!

    Mystery system tray icon

Hey there. I think I know what your mistery icon is. It has to be either: - VobSub or - DirectShow Filter I know, because the first time I saw this icon was when I installed the aforementioned programs and Ogg DirectShow Filter, because i wanted to view OGM files. The little thingy is quite useful really. It lets you toggle subtitles on and off if there are any and if the video file has multiple audio streams (like ogm files) it lets you select which one you want to hear. I have a screenshot of it "in action" but I don't know where to upload it. I have to check with my ISP. Hope this helps!

I've had it with NAV 2004!

I feel your pain, Vermyn. A similar thing happened to me a while ago (although it wasn't an antivirus program). Thanks for the reccomendations. I'll check those two out when I get the chance.

I've had it with NAV 2004!

Thanks for all your replies! I did some more snooping and I heard that configuring Avast! could easily take an hour. Could anyone confirm that? That may be a pain, but it could also mean that it'll do what I'll tell it to do. Vermyn: McAfee - evil? How come? Just curious
  11. Hello. I've recently switched to from Win2k to Win98SE, because, in my opinion, it's the best gaming OS out there. Now, I've already encountered two problems: The first is that I can't map the network drive of another computer in my LAN, which is using Windows XP. I used to just type somthing like \\Machine1\C and it would connect to that drive. Is Win98 any different? At first I thought I goofed in picking the drivers for my ethernet card, but I don't think that's the case, since I can map my router's hard drive fine, which is running Linux (and yes, Samba too). On to problem #2: Need for Speed Road Challenge (or High Stakes in the US). It doesn't work. I installed the latest drivers for my graphics card (GeForce 2 MX400 64 MB), my sound card (Hercules Muse XL) and the AGP drivers for my motherboard (Elitegroup K7S5A) and, of course, DirectX 9. What I find most irritating is that it doesn't give me any errors at all. All it does is give me a black screen for a second or so and before I know it, I'm back on my desktop, with no errors whatsoever. I've already contacted (or at least, tried to) EA customer support, but all they did was pass me around like a hot potato, so now I don't even know who I should, or am, talking to. Can anyone help? I'd really hate going back to Win2k or XP and I'm not even touching ME. Thanks in advance!

Network Drives and Need for Speed: Road Challenge

Yes, they are DX9 compatible. In fact, according to the website you MUST have DX 9 installed before installing the sound drivers. As for the Audio Compression drivers: the Multimedia category is ticked in bold (every sub-category is installed). I'm gonna fiddle around some more and if that doesn't work, I'm switching to XP. Thanks for the help, everyone!

Network Drives and Need for Speed: Road Challenge

Thanks Four and Twenty, that helped. Also, I think I might've found the source to my NFS4 problem. I think it's the sound. The windows sounds play fine, but I can't hear any sound in movies although I'm sure I have the appropriate codecs and filters, and there isn't any sound in certain programs like console emulators. What's up with that?

Quake 3 Arena Linux Dedicated Server

Hello there. I am trying to get a Quake 3 Arena dedicated server up and running on my linux box, so my friends can play on my LAN and others on the net can join in, but since I'm not very good with Linux... Anyway, I installed the Quake 3 Arena for Linux and patched it to point release 1.32 and tried running q3ded and here's what happened: Code: [admin@rogga quake3]$ q3dedQ3 1.32 linux-i386 Oct 7 2002----- FS_Startup -----Current search path:/home/admin/.q3a/baseq3/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak8.pk3 (9 files)/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak7.pk3 (4 files)/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak6.pk3 (64 files)/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak5.pk3 (7 files)/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak4.pk3 (272 files)/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak3.pk3 (4 files)/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak2.pk3 (148 files)/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak1.pk3 (26 files)/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/pak0.pk3 (3539 files)/usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3q3ded/baseq3----------------------4073 files in pk3 file[censored]ecing default.cfgcouldn't exec q3config.cfgcouldn't exec autoexec.cfgHunk_Clear: reset the hunk ok--- Common Initialization Complete ---Opening IP socket: localhost:27960Hostname: rogga.hubAlias: roggaAlias: localhost.localdomainAlias: localhostIP: 127.0.0.1Started tty console (use +set ttycon 0 to disable)^3PunkBuster Server: PunkBuster Server (v0.993 | A0 C0.0) **DISABLED**Hitch warning: 1626 msec frame time Now, I'm particularly worried about the things in bold: 1. The "couldn't exec" lines. I did some googling and everyone said this isn't serious, but can anyone confirm that? 2. **DISABLED** Why did he go and do that? I 90% sure I forgot to add some parameters after q3ded, but those are all greek to me... Also, could this be the reason why my Windows Q3A client doesn't find the game? Because it's not even running? 3. "Hitch warning" I don't even understand that one. I've also read the docs that said I needed to patch my kernel with a patch called udp_wide_broadcast.patch and here's what happened: Code: [admin@rogga LinuxFAQ]$ patch -p1 < udp_wide_broadcast.patchcan't find file to patch at input line 3Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option? The text leading up to this was:--------------------------|--- linux/include/linux/sysctl.h.orig 2002-08-17 19:52:27.000000000 -0500|+++ linux/include/linux/sysctl.h 2002-08-17 19:53:00.000000000 -0500--------------------------File to patch: File to patch? I dunno. I was guessing this thing was automatic. Also, there's an error, which puzzles me. My computer specs are: Pentium 200 MHz 96 MB Ram A 4 MB graphics card (I always forget which one it is) Two ethernet cards I think that's it. Not exactly a powerhouse, I know, but it should be enough for a dedicated server, I think. It worked for Unreal Tournament anyway... It's running the ancient, but good RH 7.2. Can anyone help? Sorry for the inconvenience and/or for the stupid questions. Thanks in advance!

    Unreal Fortress Dedicated Server

Hi. I'm trying to get a UnF Dedicated Server up and running. So far, I've been able to install the UT-Server, the Unreal Fortress mod and that ASU thing. All I wanna know now is how to run it. I'm a Linux newbie and I'm totally confused ;( Thanks in advance! P.S.: This is off-topic, but: What is the Quake 3 Arena equivalent for Counter-Strike?

    Unreal Fortress Dedicated Server

Thanks for your support. I managed to run Unreal Fortress as a dedicated server. However, this didn't turn out to be a good idea, since noone was interested enough to play (why they didn't tell me that sooner is beyond me). Anyway, now I want to uninstall the damn thing. But here's what happens: [admin@rogga UninstallerData]$ sh Uninstall_Unreal_Fortress_Gold No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH environment variable. You must install a VM prior to running this program. I downloaded and installed the Java Runtime Environment and even the Service Development Kit (since this is the first thing that popped up in Google when I typed "Java VM"), but that didn't help at all. Any ideas?

    Supreme snowboarding AKA Boarder Zone

Hi there. I have Supreme Snowboarding (full version) and it doesn't work on my system (Win2k). Usually I would give up and boot to Win98, but then I noticed something: There is a compatibility patch for Boarder Zone in ACT 2.6! Boarder Zone and Supreme Snowboarding are one and the same, only with different names. I tried copying and modifying the patch. The thing copied into my custom database just fine, but I couldn't modify anything. Ugh! I'm so close! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Hey, thanks for the reply REL!c2K! The problem is I can run a normal UT just fine (Deathmatch, CTF, Assault etc.), but I don't know how to run a UnF server.

    Best 2D - yes, 2D - graphics card

The topic kinda says it all. My friend is looking for a good 2D graphics card, since he uses those Photoshop-like programs so much. He's currently using a GeForce card (don't ask which, he never told me) and he's about to hurl it out the window :x Any suggestions?

    Best 2D - yes, 2D - graphics card

Hey, thanks for the replies, all of you! My friend went out and bought a Parhelia a couple of days ago. He was putting off to buy a new graphics card for so long that he accumulated enough money to buy Parhelia and more. I guess being lazy has its benefits

Which is the Best MMORPG out there?

Hey. Sorry it took me so long to reply. Gargus: Thanks for the info. But I read that the PC version is a combination of PSO and PSO ver.2. So what, I only pay half price? Just kidding. Anyway, is that free or not? I just found a page where they still sell it and am thinking of buying it.

I think I screwed something up....

I've been using ACT 2.6 for a long time. I downloaded it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/appexperience/default.asp Then I saw DosFreak's thread about NFS: High Stakes compatibility patch being hidden here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/compatibility/act.exe Since I liked NFS: HS better than Porsche Unleashed I downloaded the Toolkit and instaled it. But I made the fatal mistake of not uninstalling ACT 2.6 before I installed that. After that Application Compatibility Administration Tool keeps saying: "Compatibility Administrator was unable to open the system database", even after I uninstalled both ACTs and installed ACT 2.6 again. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

Yike! That post really is that old! I guess I should check the dates before I try anything next time. Anyway, thanks DosFreak! ACT 2.6 is back in action! Good thing, too. X-Wing vs TIE Fighter was starting to give me problems

    Resident Evil 1 and 2

Hi. I have problems with Resident Evil 1 and 2. RE 2 installs fine, while you have to run ACT to install RE 1, but it does the job. Anyway, both games have the same problem: When I get in the game it's all veeeeery sluggish, it's like I'm running the thing on a P133. My comp.: AMD Duron 1200 MHz 256 MB RAM GeForce 2 MX400 ECS K7S5A Mobo Thanks in advance for your help!
