Desperately need to delete a file
Jerry Atrik replied to gt93grad's topic in Everything New Technology
thnx for the kudos since i daily fix web hijackings around here there, is always that one file that loads even during a safemode boot the only way i figured out how to remove it easily is to deny the system permission to load. -

not being terribly familier with the asus bios setup im going to guess the the setting is on the same page with the hyperthreading enable feature. check that setting, it normally defaults to v1.4 (as opposed to v1.1) -

find the file u want to delete and right click on it then properties, then the security tab on top. it shows a list of people and things with permissions remove them all. ps if a box pops up saying that inherited permissions rule then hit that advanced button and uncheck the inherited permissions. -

i installed a slippy sp2. it's clean it's fast popup blocker works great many security settings are off by default so it might be a problem for the laymen. i went to websites that usually have malicious coding and popups galore. no hijack, no popups, no "do u want to install this piece of crap software" active x prompt. but... i went to hp to d/l printer drivers and the xp default security settings wouldnt allow it and didnt notify me. even windows update wouldnt run. after some looking around i found the switches and viola' since i have a decent router firewall i turned xp's off but i will play with that soon.

installing 3rd party driver during setup with no floppy drive
Jerry Atrik replied to balemon's topic in Hardware
search these forums for it. there are many threads with good info for your problem. -
sorry i lost track of this thread. i can't find the box on your version unless i uninstall and reinstal the older version. not having the time lately has prevented that. your generic win32 host proc, for norton firewall, is your standard loopback connection. it's ok to allow or auto configure that one.

i know just how u feel there is no software that works 100% i have to deal with it here daily on 30 computers. someone is always getting hijacked. my steps are as follows. 1 stop suspected processes in task man 2 handpick thru the registry deleting as much as i can find 3 manually delete program folders: here is where it gets sticky (there are always at least 2 programs that u cant delete, one is lycos(whatever) .dll) 4 scan with adaware 5 read results and note loaded programs 6 try and delete said programs 7 change security permissions on all programs u cant delete removing ALL permissions (including system) 8 reboot 9 delete files u couldnt delete before 10 give client your theory on testing that should be required to operate a computer, and any other darwinian thoughts. believe it or not this works 9 out of 10 times. it's not the answer u were looking for but i hope it helps a little.

(i have that version somewhere around here) *edit* sounds like u have what i call the most fun job <--- process engineer with a degree in physics playin with new stuff is the only wat to work.

i would bet that it would run better slipstreamed.

ok, nis v4 nis and npf have different ui's so i will have to look thru it when i get home. when i reinstall i load my settings from a file so it's hard to remember right offhand. i wouldnt turn anything "off" until u are sure that u are turning only the "alert status" off. *edit: open nis, click on internet status. on the left 2nd down is "reporting" slide the thingy to min... or configure to your likeing. this will stop alerts but not stop security.

just go to the alert/reporting area and turn off reporting. this way it'll still block scans but not popup and annoy u.
