  1. a 640x480 capture of analog video is typically fine. thats more than a normal tape has and more than a normal tv will show. when u capture or output at a larger res it's adding lines anyway, so u either add lines during capture or during coding for a analog tape. for this card i dont think it makes a difference either way.

i would like to experiment with the higher res's but i dont have an edtv or hdtv to play with.

*trivia note: the new divx codec will allow progressive compression (for edtv) and a few of the newest dvd players are reading divx.

  2. i would suggest the pinnacle studio series

studio av/dv will capture digital and analog and includes the studio software for about 130-150 (i have this one)

it outputs vcd, svcd and dv formats, and will do the burning. (it will also output most any format that u have a codec installed for)

it has an mpeg processor on the card to speed the coding along.

ps beware of the usb capture ones.

  3. arent the new drivers available on the web?

the dot4.lpt is part of their driver set.

not sure if they had u install this way but for hp usb printers

u dont plug anything in until the drivers are loaded. then plug it in and "auto" install when it finds new hardware

  4. i've had ht xeons since the day they came out (about feb 2001).

they arent much faster than a normal processor doing one thing but they are monsters of multitasking.

the biggest advantage for normal peeps is that java multithreads big time so all java apps, especially the expensive engineering apps will smoke.

my 2 dual xeon workstations are almost identical except the e7500 chip v i860

the i860 with rambus runs so much cleaner than the e7500 with ddr that

i wont build another dual xeon with ddr.
