Sounds like your speakers are plugged into a line out rather than a speaker out jack. Some older sound cards have a jumper on the card that designates whether the output should be a line out or speaker out.

Try here http://www.3dfxworld.com/GB/driversgb.html or here... http://www.voodoofiles.com/3dfxhelp.asp good luck!

On Fred's machine... is the account he's using The Administrator's account, just renemed Fred? [edit] Oh yea, is offline file caching enabled? [/edit] -
I had a similar incident with an Actiontec router a few months ago. An office had 3 computers plugged into it directly, addressing via dhcp. This worked great for about a year. One day two of the three just stopped connecting to the internet. The computer that continued to work, worked on all ports. The computers that stopped working would not work on any port. I plugged in my laptop and it wouldn't work either. I called Qwest (the Actiontec is leased from them) told the tech support guy everything I'd done. He had me do a couple things just to make sure I wasn't smoking something and in the end overnighted us a new dsl modem/ router. All has been good since.

MS Released a floppy based corrupt Registry Repair Utility

It's not DOS based, but Bart's PE Builder is looking pretty promising as a recovery tool http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ -
MS Released a floppy based corrupt Registry Repair Utility

Quote: Hi Mezron, You're quite welcome for the link. I would recommend running SP4 again now that you have repaired your registry. Often with each service pack Microsoft ads new features and therefore registry settings. Since the repair utility officially only suppports SP3 I think it would be a good idea to play it safe. Actually, that is a good piece of advice. This machine is just for testing things like this on though so I'm not too concerned. It rarely goes more than a week or two without being re-imaged. I was more interested to see if it does any obvious damage to a SP4 install. Maybe tomorrow I'll install XP on it and run this tool on it just to see what happens :x -
MS Released a floppy based corrupt Registry Repair Utility

Not that it necessarily means anything, I did run it on my test system (Win2k w/SP4). No obvious damage was done to the registry. YMMV. 6 floppies... by the time you download this, create the disks (hope none of the floppies flake out, disk 3 died on me had to start over from beginning) boot the system with said floppies... took me about 30 minutes. This is something that really does need to be made in .iso format and run from cd. it is a pretty handy thing though, thanks for the link! -

Quote: Heh, if you are stuck with a blown registry? This might be the ticket out... & if it's already messed up, this probably couldn't hurt it anymore anyhow! apk I agree... I took the specifying of Win2000, SP2, and SP3 to mean if you use it on SP4 would be bad juju. The date on the page is from September 23rd... SP4 was out for a while at that point if I remember correctly. I have a test system w/SP4 on it. If no one calls me away tomorrow I'll run it on that system. If it goes up in flames I'll let you guys know -
I dunno... maybe try a different defragger? http://diskeeper.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp http://www.oo-software.com/en/download/index.shtml http://www.raxco.com/products/downloadit/ I've had good luck with both Diskeeper and O-O. Never tried Raxco, though others here swear by it.

on the download link I saw this... *Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 Wonder what happens on SP4? -
Not really sure what's going on there. Try disabling system restore, then running a defrag. You can turn it back on when it's done. To turn it off right click on "My Computer" then click "Properties" you should see a tab that says system restore. It should be pretty obvious from there. I'd bet it's just system restore. Even though you only have one restore point set, it's constantly up[censored] in the background.

Quote: Every time I Defrag my HD with the Windows XP Defrag program. I have more Defragmented files than before I ran it. Why? ;( Every time I come to NT Comaptible today I see this question posted more times than before. Why? ;( Seriously though, take a look at the view report thing when it's done to find out which files are still fragmented. If all the files are from system restore then it's probably nothing to be concerned with.

Game Software/Hardware Incompatibility Questions/Concern
mezron replied to Chad M. Collins's topic in Games
Quote: last time I checked there was no direct 3d support for voodoo on XP. Last time I checked the latet XP drivers ship wil glide only..... Take a look at 3dfxvs2k.inf in your %windir%\inf\ folder. You'll see some references to Direct Draw, but no glide references. Here are the files you'll need to have on your system to have Glide support 3dfxOGL.dll 3DfxSpl2.dll 3DfxSpl3.dll 3dfxvs.dll 3dfxvsm.sys glide2x.dll glide3x.dll You won't find these on a Windows XP machine unless you downloaded and installed them yourself. You're right though, no Direct3D support. Only Direct Draw (2d) my mistake. -
Game Software/Hardware Incompatibility Questions/Concern
mezron replied to Chad M. Collins's topic in Games
Try looking around here for some drivers that will help. http://www.voodoofiles.com/category.asp?x=13 Windows XP only includes Direct3d drivers for the Voodoo3 card, and the perfomance is pretty atrocious. The Voodoo cards were designed to run best with Glide, which isn't included with the XP drivers. I don't really expect you to get too far with this game and that video card. It's performance is quite a bit below the TNT2 minimum the game calls for. Good luck regardless. -
Quote: I don't see why you shouldn't be able to run 32 bit apps on a 64 bit system unless they want to try and screw us all over. We can run 8 and 16 bit programs on 32 bit Windows. You'll be able to run 32bit stuff. On the Intel 64bit system it'll run in a compatibility mode, with reduced performance. On the AMD side 32bit will run native, with no slowdown. 16bit isn't supported at all on the Intel. I'm not sure about the AMD.

I consider myself a fairly advanced user, been using Windows since the 3.1 days. I'd like to learn a little programming. I can write a basic batch file and simple stuff like that but I'd like to go a little further. Where is a good place to start? Any websites you guys recommend so I can RTFM Any tools that are good to start with? Visual stuff is preferred, but I can work from a command line. Open source stuff would be preferred as I'm kinda broke at the moment (Christmas and all). Open source allows me to look at how stuff works as well, it just doesn't make any sense to me at the moment and I'd like to change that.

Quote: I may be a "late-bloomer" finding this out today, was busy posting & watching the "N.Y. Jets" pre-game show before stumbling on this news! Do you think this will halt the hassles overseas? APK I personally don't think it'll have a big effect overall. As long as the Arab world and Israel refuse peace the rest of the world is forced to pick a side. As long as the US even acknowledges the existence of Israel as legitimate, the Arab world assumes us to be on the side of Israel and therefore the enemy as well. It should boost Bush's approval ratings for a little while though

Depends... If the games you're playing now don't really stress your card you may not "see" a big difference. Actual raw performance wise, the Radeon smokes the GeForce. I upgraded from a GeForce4 Ti4200 w/64MB to a Radeon 9600 pro w/128MB and was a bit underwhelmed. Most of the games I play are OpenGL/ QuakeIII based games. The DirectX games seemed to appreciate the upgrade a little more though. I don't think I got $200 worth of upgrade personally.

Saddam captured: Do you think this will end the hostilities?
mezron replied to mezron's topic in Slack Space
Man, I love this website... a few other places I've been today have threads on this same topic and some of the posts are just nasty towards other people. I can't remember ever really seeing any personal attacks to speak of here. Thanks All! -

Thanks for the link! It answered a couple questions I had Looking at the pros/ cons of the different languages C/C++ will probably be the way to go for me. I enjoy dabbling in Linux as well, so I'm sure there are a lot of resources available down that road.

A few posts on the speed difference of 64 bit vs. 32 bit. http://www.arstechnica.com/cpu/03q1/x86-64/x86-64-2.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit http://www.thejemreport.com/lab64/64bit.php This is a tough topic to find good info about. There is a lot of marketing driven material out there to sort through.
