Quote: At the same clock speed the 64Bit AMD chip IS faster than its Athlon XP counterpart. The 64Bit AMD FX processes more efficiently, has more transistors yada yada. Read the reviews... There are other things in the FX as well as being 64 bit that make it more efficient/ faster. The 64 bitness in itself doesn't add any speed though.

At the same clock speed there shouldn't be any difference to speak of. The big difference is you'll be able to access more than 4GB of RAM at a time. I think a common misperception is that people think thier performance will double... twice the bits = twice the fps in Quake. Thats simply not the case.

Quote: Thanks guys! * I guess that'd be my MAIN question, & here is the best way for me to phrase it etc.: If I was installed & running Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition, would I need to purchase DK8 'enterprise' version... OR could I get buy installing the "PRO/STD" version of Diskeeper 8.x? APK Here ya go... http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp#grid

I have the Pro version and I like it. I had 7 before. I haven't done any "testing" but it does seem a little faster, and a little easier on the system resources. I don't particularly care for the new interface though. It seems a bit "busy" for what should be a simple utility. It's as if the layout was designed by somebody in the marketing department... it's big, colorful and has lots of things to click on. It makes for nice screenshots.

Couple things off the top of my head... They already own a copy of Win2k. XP doesn't offer enough more than 2k to justify the upgrade price for some. Personal aversion to product activation. There are a lot of people that fall into this category. Real or percieved, some people think 2k is faster than XP.

OK... all this talk of System Shock2 has me interested. After looking around a little bit I see that a patch gives it coop multiplay. Has anyone tried this? How well does it work? I'll probably try this game anyway, but coop is a big plus in my book Jim

how do you be able to freely move desktop icons around
mezron replied to Tay's topic in Everything New Technology
right click on the desktop, go to "arrange icons by" and deselect "auto arrange" That should take care of it -
I'd just go get a pci network card. You can find them for as little as $10 at places like Office Depot, Best Buy, etc.

Quote: Some have run the following: regsvr32 C:\windows\system32\zipfldr.dll /u and have had some success. Thats interesting. Uninstalling the built in .zip capabilities of Windows can fix this type of thing? I wonder what the correlation is?

I've seen that happen when a cdrom or hard drive is beginning to fail. Does it happen when you open up "My Computer"?

Do you want to remove the address bar completely or just have it not keep any history? To remove the address bar completely you can just click view -> Toolbars and uncheck address bar. There is probably a setting in gpedit.msc that will prevent someone from re-enabling it, though I've never looked for such a setting. To keep IE from keeping a history just look here http://www.google.com/search?q=clear+ie+...tart=0&sa=N or from the control panel go in to Internet Options and click clear history on the first screen when you just want to get rid of your history.

proof that there are stoners working at M$
mezron replied to Four and Twenty's topic in Everything New Technology
I'm not sure what your point is... were you expecting something else? If you dig around a bit you'll find stuff from Win95 and probably before. -
It should have a 4 pin connector on the card for the led. Your led lead only has 2 wires though. I had to do the trial and error approach to see which 2 wires worked and observed no problems doing so. YMMV. If you put the hd led wire on your promise card though, your led wont work for the onboard ide activity. Thought I'd let you know in case it matters.

Quote: Quote: CloneCD is no more and there is no elaberation of the "Legal" issues involved here neither Making copies for your buddy is probably the most common (ab)use of clone cd, but there are legitimate uses as well. Just the other day I tried to install Unreal on my computer. My cdrom wouldn't read it, so on my other computer I copied it. My cdrom read the copy just fine, so I was able to play a game that I legally own again.

Quote: http://www.leinensoft.com/software/command.htm You could always schedule one of these apps. Whats the reason for this request? You may also have to disable the "modififed" 2003 shutdown screen with a GPO. Hey thanks! There are a few handy tools there I found a tool that I could use to automatically reboot Win98 machines a few years ago but it wasn't as straight forward as these. I'm a little curious about the need to reboot a server daily myself though. That just seems like asking for trouble.

If you installed Norton antivirus on the same day you could look at when your subsription runs up.

Do you have another computer you can plug your monitor in to? A friends computer maybe? Maybe your problem is different than mine is. The only thing I see unusual on mine is the text is a little fuzzy. Kind of like if you've been looking at a monitor for too long past bedtime... makes you want to squint. Everything else looks good though, if I'm playing a game or something like that it looks great.
-
I'd say it's probably the monitor. I have a Mag 19" CRT and it displays text a little fuzzy. I used to have an nVidia Ti4200, I just upgraded to a Built by ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. Changing video cards made no difference in image quality that my eyes (20/15 vision) can see... well color is a little more vivid maybe

The best defraggers for disks and registry
mezron replied to silicongod's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: I've tried Diskeeper 7.0 but it wouldn't complete after hours and hours (40GB HDD about half full). Apparently, version 8.0 doesn't like partitions once Partition Magic has worked with them ;( I think something is wrong with your partition. I use Diskeeper 7 and have never seen it take more than about 30 minutes to complete, even on drives that haven't been defragged in over 3 years! I'm not sure about the registry. I just looked at mine with the Sysinternals software a couple of people have mentioned here. All of mine are reporting 1 fragment, so that leads me to believe Diskeeper is defragging my registry as well. It probably does that during the boot time defrag.
