Double The Speed Of Your PC

The only ways I ever found to speed up a PC --I have been a Net Admin for over 10 years now and have built too many computers to count... These are a list of my tips...Maybe they will work for you... MSCONFIG.EXE (win 9x) stop Microsoft auto starting ( scheduling agent...Wcmdmgr..) and other programs that seem to want to startup when you boot...but you still that you can click them to start...(things like scanners...AIM...Yahoo...Quick Time Updater...Antivirus Updaters....Div X Updaters...Real Updaters.)You should also check what is in your start menu...programs...startup...folder. gpedit.msc (WIN2K/NT/XP) to stop services that you don't use..If you are not networked and a stand alone computer...you can turn alot of the auto networking features off or set them to manual...Also the error reporting and the Auto Up[censored] features...You should also turn off the Guest and the Remote Access users.. Turn Off the Auto Time Update feature (winxp) Personally I have found that with systems with less than 64mb memory Fat does better than Fat 32.... On an Nt/win2k/WinXp system NTFS is quicker but turn off the auto indexing (winxp) [program files folder then right click properties and then advanced] on programs that you don't use frequently ...The less it has to keep track of ...the quicker the components you do use come up.. This is my schedule... On Win2K/XP/NT Empty IE cache every 2 days... Defrag 1 time a week...(unless I surf the web for more than 3 days a week) then I defrag 2 times a week. Scandisk every 2 weeks. Disk Cleanup after every 2 programs that I install or unistall. Win 9X/ME Defrag 2 times a week... Scandisk every 2 weeks... Empty the IE cache every 2 days.. Disk Cleanup after every 2 programs that I install or unistall. The biggest thing to speed up a system is not having everything on the desktop....or starting up automatically. If you are technically profficient. regedit from the run command. and remove...registry keys for things that you will not install. Some values windows puts in automatically...just in case you do install the software...and most programs put the value in themselves when they install. Example...On my laptop which Has a1.5 gig HD...I removed all the references to Nescape and AOL... Kind of trimming the fat... Always Make a backup before you mess with the registry so you can easily go back.... Also have found out that in IE 6.0 by turing off the Auto Resize pictures (Tools..Internet Options...Advanced ((near the bottom))) makes web pages load up quicker. and setting your browser to the home page about:blank ...makes it come up quicker to surf the web. I have also found that IE works quicker if you remove things that you don't use in the tool bar (for me I only have the Back-Stop-Forward-refresh-home-search-favorites)...that IE comes up faster. For older systems...I have also found that by going with 16million and not 24 million or 32million colors...make the system seem to run quicker...you really can hardly tell the difference between that many colors. You should on 9x either download Xsetup or Tweak UI to turn off certain features that you don't use. You can also get them For Nt/win2K/winxp as well... these are just my personal ways to speed up a system... Hope they can help you.

    norton ghost + win98 question

I am a ghostaholic....On my main computer...I save all my stuff on a fat 32 partiotion...and have copies of the registry and the start menus for all my OS....So that I can switch from win98-xp and still have access to all my files...I usully make a ghost every 3 months... and also have all of the OS as clean installs...and by savind a copy of the registry for all ...allows me to easily edit them...and then put a fresh...install then migrate the registry...and also have all my dll's in folders labeled win9x,win Me, NT, 2k, XP, and Emb(windows embeded).

    norton ghost + win98 question

all you have to do is before you make your ghost...just go into the device manager and remove all of the devices...that should force win-98 to update its plug and play...but as I see it though ..if they have the same mobo and hardware..then you should not need to do it....remove them and shut down ....do not reboot....then do your ghost if that is the way you have to do it...but if it is the same it should not matter...you should delete all *.scr files except one like the marquee...and delete the *.hlp files for the games...and also look in the folder Program Files/online providers and make sure that there is nothing in there...also use the disk cleanup program under the system tools....to remove any temp files....also you should remove all but a few of the *.bmp files....in the windows folder...to make sure that your Ghost will be a small and quick one to recover... Hope this helps you...

    X-Com Apoclypse

Few things...check the website for an update patch...read the readme files...sometimes they have certain install switches....Radeon I think though has released a New Driver that might solve the problem....???what OS are you running and what DX version you running ...you can get that Info...by typing at the run command DXDIAG.... If you are running DX7...then update it to DX 8.1b....maybe that should help...

    Odd surfing problem

Firewall might be his problem , but I think though that when he installed IE6. It might have locked him into encrypted mode...look in the start menu...under startup...see if there is something that says encryption....and you might also check...under the auto cookie handler options...

    Sounds pfft

I just remembered something that might help.... I built my buddy a box with an 8kha+ and a SB LIVE first I had to disable onboard sound......This is what I did in order to get the sound right....I had to manually set the Irq and then input output values....even though the Operating system would set it and it said it had no problems.HIS would crackle when windows messenger poped up or when he would have winamp playing while he was fragging in quake however...but you might try this...When I did this...All of a sudden the SB Live did not have that problem anymore...here is how.you can do this ...MY COMPUTER / rt click / Properties/ Device manager/ then highlight the sound card/ then properties/ resources....I know that the win 98 set it up default....and it says it has no errors...as soon as I changed it....he did not have the problem anymore....I know you are playing a different game but It might solve your SB problem...

    Sounds pfft

???do you have in your bios....onboard sound disabled...if it has onboard sound might be causeing your problem???and also goto the sound properties...and disable your mic....sometimes that causes a problem with sound...

    Connection Problem blah blah...

don't forget to check the counter strike website for updates...sometimes they have updates that resolve problems like what you are having
  12. redvamp128

    Connection Problem blah blah...

.MSCONFIG.exe...selective startup...then goto the startup tab...uncheck the wcdmgr...schedulingagent...and quick time task...if it is there.....this will stop the auto update features of windows 98...then you have to reboot....you still can get updates thru the windows update icon in the start menu...but will give you more resources...and with these new found resources....you should get more FPS.and more bandwidth since there is no hole to M$

Just need some video card driver opinions

well the reason ...that we probably have a 9x forum on an NT site...is to cover the ...Dual Boot...Upgrade problems for people who upgrade to NT..and probably for networking the 9x to an NT platform .As far as upgrade video card drivers...I tried the asus 29.40's and they did just fine on my GF3 ti 200...increased my frames in quake...and the picture quality is there...I also put them on my TNT2 M64...and it increased the frames by 2fps..wowo big jump...but is an oldy but a good card....But there is also a Det 29.40 that is not asus specific...that is just as good...oh yah...one quickie for you...MSCONFIG.exe...selective startup...then goto the startup tab...uncheck the wcdmgr...schedulingagent...and quick time task...if it is there.....this will stop the auto update features of windows 98...then you have to reboot....you still can get updates thru the windows update icon in the task bar...but will give you more resources...and with these new found resources....you should get more FPS....My little TOSHBOX (laptop 133mhz) boots and runs faster than most peoples win 98se...with 4 times faster processors....with these auto features disabled...so it should make you get more FPS...hope this helps...

    512Meg of SDRAM

I have done alot of reasearch on different mobo/video combos...and the only thing that I have found out is adjusting my memory timing...going to 2 way associtive I think ...from 4 way associative...that usually fixed all of my BSOD problems...seems that the video card would save the data to certain parts of the memory but the OS would clear those memory values before it could be displayed...and thus the BSOD...or that is what M$ claims happens...and the reason you probably don't have the error in XP is that Xp doesn't allow the video to write to that part of the memory ...and instead redirects it to a differnt module ...which causes it to have a different IRQ setting...

    Norton Ghost

okay ...here it is plane and simple....do a search for *.mpg *.asf *.mov ...there is a sample movie in the movie of some kid on a scooter...program files/moviemaker ...that one takes up 300mb...then remove the extra screen savers... *.scr...leave the marquee one though...and do a search for *.hlp...remove the the help for the games and stuff...you can also remove some of the *.bmp files....and go into the program files online services folder and remove aol, msn, earthlink, or whatever folders that are in there...this should bring your ghost down to a size that can fit on a cd rom....

oh yah on a side note...through all of this I have been running dual monitors....with a Pci Video card S3trio...and a NVIDIA CARD....I plan on getting the GF4 TI4400...I am currently running in my other computer my tnt2m64 and in my Current computer am running the S3 video card with a GF3 TI 200.... ASUS of course...

    512Meg of SDRAM

I also before I went to winxp I had win2K installed...I had none of the problems....that you mentioned about the IRQ setting though....I had a tnt2m64 video card....a legacy *ISA* sound card...2 NIC cards...but yet my friend who had the VIA B686 chipset seemed to have the problems with IRQ steering....the trick to getting the thing to work right is in the bios..where you do have it reserve the irq...and the thing that worked for him was available for via chipsets only ...from viaarena.com is labled -----74 patch...as near as I can remember...once he installed the ---74 patch and the latest...via 4 in 1 ' ...the trick to those is installing them in sequence...install the 74 patch first...then start with 4.30 and then work your way up to the latest ones...they say that they are cumulative...I have not found them to be...and you have to reboot after each of the changes...with this way we had mutch success...he does not get the Large file transfer problems......IF you are getting the NV4 Loop...let me know...I know how to fix that...let me give you a clue...the fix for this is in your memory timing and it is in the bios...

I seem to remember reading about problems with the 9x Kernal and 512mb of memory..I used to have win 98 se and had 512mb of memory...the trick I found was that you have to disable the virtual memory settings and put them I believe at a low setting so that windows will use the memory...instead of trying to cache large amounts of data on the HD....and this was were the error came from...I also had to install a 3rd party memory manager I saw one at ANALOGX...but now I run win xp...which handles it just fine in fact....I now have a 512mb stick,256mb stick and a 128mb stick...all cas 2 MICRON...7.3ns memoroy...which gives me a (896mb)891mb that is what the os registers it as..works just fine ...my TYAN TRINITY K7 (SLOT A) with the majic cache 900mhz processor (you know the classic with the 512mb l2 cache) is rated at handling 1 gig... but at the time ...I was running a 700mhz (classic) and 512kb (2 256mb)cas 2 micron 8.ns at the time...You have to disable windows from setting your virtual memory and download a 3rd party memory manager...Windows cannot handle anything over 256mb...but with the 3rd party memory manager it can....hope this helps you.
