Server 2003 Cant see Workstations in Network
dave.green1 replied to Nick601's topic in Everything New Technology
Question #1 - Is the Server a DC? Q #2 - If so, have you created any OU's? Q #3 - Have you created the Computer Objects in ADS? Q #4 - Are the workstations configured to log into the domain? Q #5 - If there is no Domain, are all the machines (Server and the workstations) all a part of the same Workgroup? -
All, I'm in the middle of doing a Windows Server 2003 course (Prep for the 70-290 exam) and I've been searching the net for a while now and cannot find the answer to the forthcoming question. Currently, I am running Server 2003 on a laptop, because redoing my desktop machine would be a nightmare. Now, Server 2003 does not allow you to convert the hard disk on the laptop from Basic to Dynamic. So rather then waste 12 hours that I don't have with my desktop (backing up, etc), I am looking into emulation. My question is, will VM Ware allow you to create dynamic disks INSIDE the emulated environmemt? I searched the VMWare website and wasn't able to find sweet f*** all. Also, this is one of the few times that Google let me down. And if VMWare can't do it, does anyone know of a program that will? Many MANY thanks if anyone can help me here. DG EDIT: Wow am I stressed. I forgot to post a jubject. My bad.

Hey Guys, I am doing an upgrade of our building and I am using M$ wonderful FASTWIZ tool to retain data. However, one of the files I need for a user is corrupted and it won't transfer. I am wondering if anyone has seen a program that will allow me to open the file and extract the contents from it. Many big thanks in advance. Dave

dave.green1 replied to duhmez's topic in Everything New Technology
Maybe the GUID is duplcating? I have seen that before...and it gave me the duplicate name on the network error..... -
Did you change your resolution? Hmm......download or install anything new? Which OS are you running?

Does the lock happen while connected to the internet? You could have something running somewhere that is accessing the net continously (just a thought...) Have you tried un-installing the nForce drivers for the Mobo? I really think that it is the actually HD that is giving you your problem.....sounds like something is screwed on the physical disk and when the OS tries to access it, it dies. What apps did you install on the machine? Or did it start right from the get go? And what file system did you use? (Sorry for the questions but this problem has always fasinated me....the sulution we have at work is to ship it away and get it fixed....I'd really like to find a solution to the problem so I can save some money before I ship this stuff out....) EDIT: You don't happen to have a scanner attached to the machine do you?
-
Have you ran a thorough Scandisk on the HD yet? Maybe you had a bad sector or cluster somewhere on the machine..... EDIT: It is possible that one of the IDE cables is shot....I have seen something similiar to your problem at work many times....replacing the cables solved the issue..... Edit #2: I just re-read our original post and you did mention the scandisk....(sorry it's 2 am and I am tired)

Have you tried playing with the services? Maybe the Indexing Service or the Background Intelligent Transfer are locking the machine.... Also, did you install a sound card? Or is it just on-board sound?
-
It's a .DAT file....which doesn't mean a whole lot.......

Knights of the Old Republic on PC. Buy it. Play it. Love it. GOTY 2003 hands down.

I have a rather silly question....I do a lot of Remote Installs at work, and a lot of FASTWiz as well.....will a FASTWiz backup a System Restore point? I don't have that to deal with yet, but eventually it will become an issue down the road...if the System Restore point is created, the problems a user might be having could be replicated and I am trying to stay away from that as much as possible.... Any help is appreciated. Dave

I got that bloody surferbar installed on my machine and I wanna get rid of it. Now, I have found instructions on how to remove it and that isn't the issue; but I also have a friend who isn't quite tech savvy enough to delete registry keys. The bigger problem with that is that she lives 5000 miles away, so I can't just go over and delete it myself. My question is is there a prog out there that will remove it in one shot just like that? I have tried spybot and other spyware removers, but to no avail.... Thanks in advance for any help......Dave

OK...this is a problem that a friend of mine has been having for a while now and I don't know how to fix it... He had a power outage last week. Everything went off and back on just like that. The monitor wasn't recieving a signal from the box at all. However, he says that there was power to the machine still. Ever since then he has not been able to connect to the internet. He used the onboard LAN card to connect. Everytime he boots the machine, he gets the default windows IP address that it give when you can't connect to the network. When I unplug the cable, windows doesn't give the "network connection undetected" message. Also, there are not active connections that show on the router box. I have tried disabling the card in the CMOS, starting in safe mode with networking and playing with ever service I can think of. It is a Linksys box and his machine is a P4 2.0 GHZ running Win XP PRO. I cannot remove the TCP/IP settings to restart from scratch. I've tried doing a release and renew on the card and that didn't work either. The next step is to install a new network card, disable the onboard one and see it that will fix it. If not, I don't know what to do next. Has anyone ever seen this problem, or is he SOL? There are 2 people who use the router...him and the guy he rents from. The guy upstairs has no problem at all connecting. There is no internet connection sharing crap on XP either....this is a straight DSL/Cable router.... I have never seen this in my life.....so I turn to the great minds on this wonderful forum... Can I do anything else to try and fix this before I start screwing with the hardware. I really appreciate any help I can get on this.....cause I don't know what to do next. Thanks in advance guys....Dave

It was the onboard NIC. It was fried....I put a PCI card in and it worked no problem. Thanks for the help...

dave.green1 replied to dave.green1's topic in Everything New Technology
It's the original beta. I have tried to download the refresh but it won't let me do that either.... It's not like it's a big deal but the outlook crash is really annoying....drives me nuts actually.... I love Outlook 2003. It is the best MS has done so far....and the rest of the package is quite nice as well....but Outlook 2003 is the star in my eyes..... Thanks for all assiatnce, btw...much appriciated.... Dave -

I tried it and this is what it says.... "NOTE: The Office Update site only supports official releases of Office XP products. You cannot use the site because you have installed Office XP product(s) from an unsupported build. To use the Office Update site, please uninstall any Office XP products from unsupported builds." I have the actual CD's, these aren't ripped versions..... Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks, Dave -
Stumped. Cannot delete Folder from mounted folder volume
dave.green1 replied to duhmez's topic in Everything New Technology
Have you tried restarting the machine? There could be a service attached to the drive.....like the logical disk manager...... Or you could start the recovery console and delete it from the command line.... -
Could be an IRQ conflict somwhere.....

How much space does 2k take up?
dave.green1 replied to Radioactive Frog's topic in Everything New Technology
The typical install for XP is about twice the size of 2k....and XP ranges anywhere from 1.1 GB to 1.4 GB (not including swap).... I could be mistaken, however. -
I just got an odd request, but yet I have to ask.... Is there anywhere that I can download a copy of say IE 5.0 or 5.5 as a standalone? What I mean is that is there anywhere I can download a copy of IE, burn it onto a CD, and install it on my laptop that doesn't have internet access? Thanks for any help.........
