i remember seeing this before, never since i upgraded to xp though. in any case, check if u have installed any explorer plugins, like extra taskbar toolbars and such. also you can track what plugins .dlls are being loaded by explorer using a tool like Process Explorer from sysinternals.com

if its an old version of nero then update to the latest version 5.5.9.0 i think... otherwise, have you installed anything that could conflict with nero? like Roxio stuff or aspi drivers...

another very nice freeware tool for this is Cathy from http://rvas.webzdarma.cz/ i also use it to speed up searches of my HD, it comes with a command line version that u can easily setup as a Scheduled Task to index all ur HDs daily, and it does it fast. after that using cathy to search the HDs/CDs is lightening fast.
