    Warcraft III

My install went smoothly and it plays just as well as i would expect on any windows installation. I haven't installed it on a windows partition though so I couldn't give a good comparison. I will say it's worth installing in winex. Keep up the good work Transgaming!!!!!

    UT2003 Installation Tip

instead of copying the install script to your home directory you could also just run the script using the full path name. For example from your home dir. type: $>sh ./mnt/cdrom/setup.sh (or whatever the filepath is) as long as your current working directory isn't /mnt/cdrom you will be able to mount and umount the drive without headaches.

Nvidia GeForce 4 under Mandrake Linux 8.2 or 9?

Now is a good time to get very familiar with everyone's favorite text editor vi. It is the most lightweight and most every bare minimum system still will install vi. I agree with clutch, building from source is the best route to go here, no matter what distro you use. After you have run make successfully you need to start editing the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. (Be sure to do this as superuser)

try out Pan (Pimp Ass Newsreader), the newest version supports yenc and it is very similar to agent.

Nvidia GeForce 4 under Mandrake Linux 8.2 or 9?

Not to sound rude but the howto on nvidia's site should cover it. If you have any problems after that let me know and I'll try to help.

What do I need to install GNOME 2.0.2?

I never could get any major installation like kde or gnome to work with redhat (damn dependencies) which is why I use debian (apt is a wonderful thing). One thing you might want to look into is the apt-rpm frontend that I believe VA Linux has developed. I believe you can get the .rpm for this on freshrpms.net, if not just search for it on rpmfind.net. It is an awesome tool which will resolve your dependencies for you if possible. Also make sure to pick up the gui front end for this called Synaptic. When in doubt check out the FAQ at gnome's site too.

What do I need to install GNOME 2.0.2?

Which distro are you trying to install Gnome 2 from???
  10. Well, I'm still not sure what Windows registry is supposed to accomplish so I can't explain that one. If by .ini files you mean start up scripts, Linux also has those (init scripts) Linux has profiles, for the choice of shell, also for desktop environments. In linux you don't map drives, you mount them whether they are physical media or network file systems. Linux also has libraries which most commonly are found in, yup you guessed it the /lib directory. Hope that cleared it up a little bit.

Just installed the new Red Hat Beta

Just installed it for myself. Looks nice, had to change the window behavior back to click to focus and turn off double clicking. The only problem I have is can't get networking to work. Doesn't like my nforce onboard nic, tried to build from source and it screams that the modules were created using a version 2 gcc instead of version 3???? Tried to use one of my trusty tulip clones LNE100TX or KNE110TX (which worked fine in any other distro), doesn't like those either. The module gets loaded fine but it won't pick up a dhcp response. Also when I assign a static, any time I try to ping my gateway it says destination unreachable.

This forum is deader than roadkill

Sorry, should have explained better. Grip is just a gui front end, which will use any command line ripping or encoding utility. Just makes it a little beginner friendly. But I agree, CDParanoia and Lame is the best combo. Also I think Grip will utilize CDDB for tagging your mp3s.

I personally use grip to rip and encode cd's. It's fairly easy to configure and use.

Linux to get on the internet through WinXP PC

You would have better luck using the Linux box as the router, not only for security reasons but configurability. I found a site that detailed how to setup a DHCP server on Red Hat, which is not much different than Mandrake. It only took about 15 minutes, I also believe that there is a selection during install to set up your linux box as a router. If you need help let me know.
