I highly doubt it, since I'm pretty sure that the W2k version of DCPROMO has some serious hooks into the low levels of the OS. I just took our last NT4 server offline about 3 months ago, that was such a relief.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/sp2preview.mspx Did you connect to the Windows Update v5 site? http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com Note that you'll have to install the BITS2 update first (as well as the HTTP 5.1, I think). Reboot after installing those updates, rescan at Windows Update, choose advanced/custom install, and it's in there. Note that it *IS* supported to upgrade from the RC2 build to the RTM/RTW (final) when it is released. Or here's a direct link to the full (offline/network) install package for English: http://download.microsoft.com/download/C/1/6/C169BA60-E2D6-4C5F-B4F2-23DA024C9FA8/xpSP2.exe 264MB Edit: Just realized that I responded to the wrong message, I didn't see the 2nd page of posts. Anyway, maybe someone else can find this info useful.

There's no DCPROMO in NT4.

Oh my. Where to start. You have a DC that is *directly* connected to a DSL modem without a hardware firewall? You want to use ICS? I would HIGHLY recommend you rethink that idea. Anything would be better, even a SOHO router like a Linksys BEFSR81 (8 port switch with routing/NAT). If you insist on trying to use your existing hardware, you should really look into installing ISA Server 2004 on that server. I would never, never, never recommend a "live" DC ever be connected directly to the internet without a router/firewall/packet filter before it.

It is possible the CD lens is dirty, or the drive/optics are failing. Do you have another drive you could (temporarily) replace the drive in question with? That should isolate the problem.

How to VIOLENTLY delete files from NTFS partitions?
adamvjackson replied to dr_st's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Actually it is similar to SANS, although more categorized. SecurityFocus is the home of BugTraq, which you've no doubt heard of. I subscribe to the 'digest' mailings, which have several threads in one email for easier reading (and less clutter). Of course all of the lists can be read online too, here: http://securityfocus.com/archive -
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/sp2preview.mspx Or you could just wait a few weeks until the final version is released.

Assuming you're the legitimate owner/administrator of this system, you can use this utility: http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ Not for the faint-of-heart, but it works wonders.

How to VIOLENTLY delete files from NTFS partitions?

Good read, thanks Alec. I subscribe to the SecurityFocus Forensics mailing list, and there's always interesting discussions going on there, as well as legal issues. -
Personally I use MSN Messenger, and I've found a super-easy way to remove the banner ad at the bottom of the contact list window, without the use of any 3rd-party programs. First, locate the following file: %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Temp\links.txt Open that file, and delete all the contents. As soon as you do so, mark the file as 'Read Only'. Open/reopen the main MSN Messenger window, banner ads gone! About the privacy, I have the option to block everyone that is not explicitly on my approved contact list enabled.

Windows 2000 Server Forwarding Stops Periodically
adamvjackson replied to hwest's topic in Networking
Likely as everyone else has indicated, it's a flaky DNS server that the requests are being forwarded to. By default, without any forwarders specified in Windows 2000 DNS, requests are forwarded to one of the 13 root servers. Have you tried allowing that root forwarding to occur? There's also the possibility that the network card driver is a little flaky. Hopefully you're using a good-quality Intel server-class NIC. Good luck, and as always, hope this helps. -
Bypass how? Do you have a valid username and password on the computer/domain?

Too bad I'll have to invest in new hardware to (properly) enjoy this game... I've been looking forward to this game for ... oh, 10 years? I've been playing Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, and Ultimate Doom with http://legacy.newdoom.com Doom Legacy. Quite fun! -

APK, AFAIK, all the feds, et al actually do is replace the read/write head with a more sensitive/powerful magnet. Also, check out http://dban.sourceforge.net Free (as in speech and beer) and good. From the "News" section on the DBAN page: March 2004: DBAN appears briefly in the TechTV Screen Savers episode How the Department of Energy Stays Secure. DBAN is part of the National Nuclear Security Administration suite of security tools. -
QTD=Quit to desktop Yes, SP2 has DirectX 9.0c, I suspect Microsoft will release a stand-alone installation for older operating systems shortly after the release of SP2.
-
Encountered a pretty big regression in 2162 today, our VB6 frontend for SQL would randomly QTD. Uninstallation of SP2/2162 resolved this issue. Note, I have filed the appropriate bug details to Microsoft.

What's up with the Free MCSE class post ??

There was a dual posting earlier this morning, and they seemed to be spam, so probably an admin deleted the posts. -

Is your cooling airflow in your case sufficient? It sounds like heat-related issues. You may wish to get a software utility to monitor system temperatures while you run some games, etc. -
I suppose this is v2 of the WDM? Hopefully this can allow for more drivers to complete WHQL certification. Hopefully WHQL certification can actually mean something...

<rant> OK, not to sound like a BOFH, but I think there really should be a basic computer literacy level required before a user can access the internet. Maybe a solution would be for the local machine to run in an extremely locked down account, until such things like real-time automatically up[censored] Anti-Virus software was installed, a firewall, and automatic OS updates were enabled. Just so many problems that you, I, and the readers of this forum encounter daily could be avoided with an ounce of prevention. Prevention and threat elimination is the key to security, not putting out brush/forest fires... Food for thought, from a network administrator/security analyist. -
Verizon + FiberOptics to Homestead = Good thing!
adamvjackson replied to adamvjackson's topic in Networking
Well, most importantly, this creates competition for the cable and telcos, which can only result in better technology available for us. You see, this creates the opportunity via affordable massive bandwidth for realtime video phones, too, so BellSouth et al will have to either start laying massive amounts of fiber, or come up with a way to better utilize the existing copper infastructure, which is doubtful, as copper is seemingly stretched to it's limits. Also, in some rural areas (specifically here in NC) the only copper in place is that which was dragged by mules about 100 years ago. (No kidding on that, I heard it from an employee at the local BellSouth NOC) So anyway, as a good analogy, with the recent beta of Gmail, MSN/Hotmail have increased their storage 125x for free users, Yahoo has increased their free storage 25x for free users, so you see? Competition between (monopoly) companies is almost always good for us. Just imagine the possibilities, with that kind of bandwidth. The internet will become even more decentralized, likely with less and less hosting companies (they may evolove solely into off-site backup/storage/archival services), more root servers, and a more peer-to-peer topology. Exciting times, these are. -
Posting that is probably frowned-upon. I would suggest you check the "usual" sources for older/rare media, such as Ebay, etc.
