Quote: Nobody plays games at 14000x1050 or 1600x1200 yet! Umm, I do... I regularly run Q3A/TA, RTCW, and W:ET at 1600x1200, max details... I usually stay around 90 FPS, only slightly dropping some frames when there is intense video processing. That's with a P4 2.26GHz, and Geforce4 Ti4400...

Auto admin logon settings for recovery console

Try renaming the built-in admin account back to 'administrator' and using that password. -
Getting Files/Directory listings of websites?
adamvjackson replied to Arin's topic in Everything New Technology
Most sites have virtual directory listing denied, as it is a security risk. Anything specific you're looking for, or just poking around? -

Multiple TCP/IP, computer name, and domain in XP. How To???
adamvjackson replied to Dr Love's topic in Networking
Actually, there's a VBS script that I came across about a year ago, called NETDUMPSWITCH that would switch between two network profiles... If you can't find it, I'll look for it when I get home from work. Or, if you'd like me to email it to you, just drop me a message. -

Which is better, AVG 7 Professional or Avast 4 Professional?
adamvjackson replied to pr-man's topic in Everything New Technology
F-Secure is made by the makers of F-Prot, which was one of the first (that I am aware of, anyway) AV scanners for DOS. I haven't used any of their software in quite some time, but the older versions were quite good for their time. -
A few other solutions here... AIDA32 can find the product keys for many installed programs, also freeware, and updated frequently. As for the install date, you could always right click on C:\WINNT or C:\WINDOWS, choose properties, and look at the create date... Works like a charm.

Poor performance: Athlon XP 2000+ On Windows 2000 Pro SP4!
adamvjackson replied to shassouneh's topic in Hardware
Could be. Are you using Sun's Java VM then? Have you checked for any updates? There's a possibility that could help out... If not, you could always kill those P2P programs you have running... ;-) -
Was the Gigabit card in a 32 bit or 64 bit PCI slot? Do you think that the PCI bus was saturated? (Edit below) Just saw that you have some pretty bus-intensive hardware there, raid controller, etc... Seems that if you were using a 32-bit PCI slot, bus bottlenecking may have been causing the problems.

Is there a remote desktop server for Win2K Pro?

I thought that Terminal Server, in administrative mode, supported RDP...? -
Call and write to their customer service department, asking for a refund/exchange. That is shoddy customer service, and more and more companies think that's acceptable. It's not. You paid for their product, remember that.

Not exactly, the USB system in your computer is acting as a network bridge. USB can (in a sense) act as a network, and a network bridge converts two different types of networks.

How to extract a file from W2K CD?
adamvjackson replied to hardwarecrazy's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: Winrar - boo winzip Agreed, simply because they 'broke' the .zip file standard with their latest release. Now, .zip files created with PKware's tools (depending on settings used to create file) can be incompatible with WinZip. -
Quote: When you cna install norton anti-v 2004 and see how slow it opens, starts anmd just generally runs i got a 2.4 @ 3ghz and 1g pc3200 and it runs slower then it should. I will do that; However, the resource hog claim has been going around since at least NAV 2001...

It has little, if anything to do with copy protection. The ISO format for CDFS allows crosslinking of files, so that one file exists (in a physical sense) although there can be aliases (in a file system sense) placed anywhere. If you scroll up, I even found a freeware app that seems to do just that.

Quote: I even tried to shut down the oracle/java processes but it keeps saying access denied even though I am an administrator! That's because it's running with SYSTEM authority, which is (obviously) above any Administrative account. -

On new stand-alone machines that I build, I usually install a version of Norton Anti-Virus, and a free software firewall, such as Sygate Personal Firewall. I honestly fail to see how the claim that NAV is a "resource hog" argument can hold any water... Newer multi-gigahertz pcs shouldn't have any problems or resource issues whatsoever. On my home machine, a P4, 2.26GHz, I can honestly not notice any performance differences with or without NAV 2002 professional installed.
