adamvjackson replied to ashirley's topic in Everything New Technology
DS3Circuit, have you heard anything about SUS 2? I thought I had heard a bit about it several months ago, but nothing recently. -
office 200 won't uninstall!

Quote: Part of the reason I used zipfile distros & batchfile installers: Size is WAY smaller, contents are visible & the SETUP.BAT and UNINSTALL.BAT I have in my shareware stuff are TOTALLY "user customizeable". Plus, an interested individual could see exactly what files were copied to what locations, and undo if necessary. Ah, the days of batch files... (remembering fondly) -
Anyone read the article on Slashdot yesterday about the new browser wars?

Norton AV 2004 beta - anyone try it? Good bad what?
adamvjackson replied to ThC 129's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: yeah i have the beta running now, it seems to be pretty good, though activation is not going to go over well. Not going well for you, or that's the general opinion? Must it be activated before initial use, or does it give you x uses before activation? How tolerant to hardware/OS changes is the activation? -

I personally am not concerned about spyware. That's due to using Mozilla Firebird (cannot be activex hijacked), and being careful of what gets installed. Sounds like Symantec is trying to offer the spyware/adware scanner as a compensation for its product activation. -
All you should really have to do after you transfer the hardware is boot from the XP CD and choose the repair option, if you're determined against a clean install.

Question concerning e-mail accounts... (Privacy)
adamvjackson replied to Lotus's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: but will that keep the already downloaded emails seprate from her eyes securly? Yes, using the default NTFS permissions. For example, the .pst file(s) are created/stored in the following location: C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\ Unless both users have local/domain admin rights, then each others mail, calendar, contacts, etc. will be kept private, inaccessable at the file system level. -

It's been my opinion that most Symantec desktop apps peaked around the 2001/2002 versions. NAV CE 8 seems to be the exception to that rule. -
If it is at all possible, I would recommend against trying to transfer the existing install, unless the systems are very similar, as in same chipsets, mass-storage controller, etc.

I remember using the 28.32's for quite several months here (Geforce4, Ti4400) and found it to be very stable. Also, www.driverguide.com is a great site, but the username is drivers and the password is all. Just a slight correction, and I know, I'm picky. Glad you got it working though.
-
I would not recommend running old drivers with new(er) hardware, but here's Nividia's driver archive site: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_archive

If you follow the unattended installation instructions, that should allow you to add a mass-storage controller driver, however, you will need to copy at least the i386 folder to your hard drive, and make a custom CD. More information on that can be found in DosFreak's Ultimate Slipstream Guide here in the forums.

Here are a few links to get you started... If you require an updated OEM driver to support an existing controller that is natively supported by Windows but is not detected during setup, you must replace the Windows driver for the controller with the new OEM driver. You can find the Windows driver for the controller on one of the six Windows Setup boot disks or in the temporary installation folder ($WIN_NT$.~BT). This replacement allows Windows to use the updated OEM driver during text-mode setup, but you must copy the same updated OEM driver to the System32\Drivers folder of the final Windows installation before the installation continues into graphics-mode setup. http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp...mp%3Bln%3Den-gb This link is probably more useful in your situation: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314479

extracting password from XP pro dialup connection?
adamvjackson replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Software
L0phtCrack might be able to recover it, but last version I used could only recover OS user account passwords though. -
sfc /scannow ?

Quote: I hadn't realized this. Could it be due to the board software and/or setting perhaps ;( It is. There is a setting in phpBB to restrict access/options to selected users/groups.

Quote: A) How do you get rid of the "select user" box that pops up on sites where you enter a user/pw Either set a default profile, or only use one profile. Quote: How can you default Mozilla/Firebird to save pws on sites, without having to answer YES all the time to the popup box? A few msgs boards im on, I set to show messages new since last visit...but it seems to not remember me from last visit, and gives me a full list of msg's (not ones new to me since last time I visited) Enable cookies.

You can, and you do not need the OPK. I don't have a link off-hand, but you need to create a custom CD/images with an 'OEM' folder below \i386.

May want to see if a BIOS update is available, too... But it sounds like bad RAM to me, as well.
