The moment - ATI or Nvidia?

    Quake did that as well.

    Remote Access Programs?

VNC or Radmin should do that.

The moment - ATI or Nvidia?

I pretty much agree with everything you said, Clutch. I think, to a degree, that the ATI hardware may be superior, but the driver support has always fallen short when compared to Nvidia's.

    Another Phoenix Browser Topic

Quote: Whate are your impressions of it? I am wondering if it is worth the downlaod. I currently use IE because it is much faster then Netscape. I know phoenix is supposed to be stripped down; how does the speed compare to IE? I have only used mozilla once (3-4 years ago) and was less then impressed. What are your thoughts? Weighing in around 6.2MB, I would say yes, it is worth the download. If you have a few hours to download, unzip (install), configure, etc, I think you will like it a lot more than IE. I initially started looking at alternative browers after more and more sites added pop-ups. Now, I have no pop-ups, a faster browser, tabbed browsing, and I have a lot more control over how the pages are rendered. Needless to say, I like Phoenix. As I have said in the other current Phoenix thread, the Mozilla project will eventually be going the way of Phoenix, slimming down, removing unnecessary features and options. IIRC, either DosFreak or Clutch is/was using Phoenix as well, perhaps they have something to add?

    Eh?

Welcome, youlanda, however you got here!
  7. Sure you can, APK... Before I tell you exactly how, though, you might want to type: about:config or about:cache in the address bar. Now, here's your answer!

Phoenix Browser: Controlling its CACHE location manually?

Downloading now... Thanks for the heads-up.

I absolutely agree, and it is most likely just rumors, but interesting nonetheless.

Phoenix Browser: Controlling its CACHE location manually?

You can get the 'nightly' compile from here: http://komodo.mozilla.org/pub/phoenix/nightly/latest-trunk/ Not a problem, I'm glad I could help... I'm somewhat of a newbie to Mozilla/Phoenix too, but I just happened across this customization mini-project this past weekend. I liked your analogy for the config files. I would assume that prefs.js would apply as a global settings template and user.js would vary to the currently logged on user, but I haven't verified that. Makes sense, anyway. Good luck, if you have questions, just post... We can sort through them together!

Phoenix Browser: Controlling its CACHE location manually?

Here's some more information I found regarding the roadmap for Mozilla and Phoenix. From MozillaZine: "Major Roadmap Update Centers Around Phoenix, Thunderbird; 1.4 Branch to Replace 1.0; Changes Planned for Module Ownership Model" http://www.mozillazine.org/articles/article3042.html And the official Mozilla development roadmap: http://www.mozilla.org/roadmap.html And the obligitory comments from Slashdot on the subject: http://slashdot.org/articles/03/04/02/2013222.shtml?tid=154&tid=156

Phoenix Browser: Controlling its CACHE location manually?

    Quote: Hell, @ least YOU know that & told me... he never stated it in that link URL above (again, see for yourself... I hate that, that's IMPRECISE & assumes knowledge on the part of the end-user looking for answers!) Don't you agree with me there? I do agree. You know what they say about assumption. Quote: Got ya... would not really matter I imagine, why? Well, because Mozilla & Phoenix come out of the SAME codebase, & I imagine what holds true for Mozilla in the way of config files would for Phoenix... at least 90% of the time! That's true. Recent annoucements from the Mozilla dev team seem to indicate that Mozilla may follow Phoenix's lead and remove the IRC and email clients in favor of seperate apps, so the codebase may become even more alike, possibly even a project merge between the new Mozilla browser and Phoenix. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but it is an exciting time, a new browser war! Quote: Quote: Just for the sake of argument, or exoneration of that member... Can you try removing/commenting out the line in prefs.js and create a new user.js? I did all that, & it did nada & in fact caused me to have an error at the startup of Phoenix... with an error msg. of "invalid character in startup configuration files contact administrator". Javascript looks ALOT like C/C++ code, so that error was not one I would make believe me... I know those 2 languages VERY well! So, I burnt the user.js file, & did it how it is done in the MOZILLA prefs.js file with the exact line that user there had, except it was also in the MOZILLA prefs.js file, so I mirrored it into PHOENIX's prefs.js file... AND, it works! How am I SO sure? Well, I looked under the OLD cache folder & no more files are being formed there & on my Ramdrive now in the PhoenixCacheTemp folder I made, there are files forming... cached files! This method seems to work & cause me NO error messages etc. That's good to know, a pretty major mistake on the forum poster's part. I didn't know that, either, so thanks for setting me straight as well! I would suggest you take a look at these two settings in peticular, as they seem to make loading of pages much faster, even more so if there is a cached copy on your Cenatek RocketDrive! Code: // This one makes a huge difference. Last value in milliseconds (default is 250)user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);// Enable pipelining:user_pref("network.http.pipelining", true);user_pref("network.http.proxy.pipelining", true);user_pref("network.http.pipelining.maxrequests", 100);

The moment - ATI or Nvidia?

On a somewhat-related note, wondering if anyone else saw this article over at Warp2Search. A brief summary: "Website Spong posted that we may have to face an unpleasant change in the way we know gaming. Right now we are all PC gamers. If it comes to what they outline there will soon be Nvidia and ATI gamers. Spong claims to have learned from insiders that Valve Software is currently investigating to make Half-Life 2 exclusive to Nvidia hardware. Half-Life was originally published in 1998 and brought innovations to the genre still referred to today. Spong also reports that both chipmakers have been in negotiations with game developers for such exclusivity deals for quite some time. More details are said to be revealed at this years E3."

Phoenix Browser: Controlling its CACHE location manually?

Glad you got it working, but IIRC, you have to create the user.js file as it does not exist by default. That forum is for Phoenix, it's just hosted at Mozillazine.org. Just for the sake of argument, or exoneration of that member... Can you try removing/commenting out the line in prefs.js and create a new user.js? Looking at the user.js that I created this past weekend, it should be located in: \Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Application Data\Phoenix\Profiles\default\(random string ending in .slt)\ After reading the forums at MozillaZine, below is the contents of my user.js, for reference, in case you want any of the modifications I have made. Code: // Stop reusing active windows:user_pref("advanced.system.supportDDEExec", false);// Disable target="_blank" (open in same window):user_pref("browser.block.target_new_window", true);// Turn off automatic image resizing:user_pref("browser.enable_automatic_image_resizing", false);// Instead of annoying error dialog messages, display pages:user_pref("browser.xul.error_pages.enabled", true);// Disable custom bookmark iconsuser_pref("browser.chrome.site_icons", false);user_pref("browser.chrome.favicons", false);// Put an end to <blink> tags!user_pref("browser.blink_allowed", false);// Force frames to be resizable pref("layout.frames.force_resizability", false);// This one makes a huge difference. Last value in milliseconds (default is 250)user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 0);// Enable pipelining:user_pref("network.http.pipelining", true);user_pref("network.http.proxy.pipelining", true);user_pref("network.http.pipelining.maxrequests", 100); If you have any questions on those settings, just let me know.

In WinXP, where are Backgrounds stored?

Also, in 2k/XP, the contents of the currently logged in user's %USERNAME%\My Documents\My Pictures shows up in the list as well.

    Disable downloading EXE files

I second DS3Circuit's suggestion of DeepFreeze, it was used at a lab I used to work at, and it's really nice, and virtually invisible to the end-user. I just checked their site, and they have a 60 day trial version for free evaluation if you're interested. You could try it on a few of your machines (provided the eula does not specify only one machine) to see how it works in your environment.

Not sure I understand your config, but why don't you have your ISA box also handle your routing and caching?

Uhhh, how is my dial-up connecting at 115.2K?!

115,200bps is the max port speed of the serial bus. Generally speaking, external modems do not require drivers, since they are 'hardware' modems, unlike 'winmodems' which are dependant upon software drivers and CPU cycles. I really wouldn't worry about the connect speed, you'll only get ~53Kb/S max at any rate.
