Have you tried running from a DOS bootdisk?
-
Actually, I was thinking the same thing during the movie... Great soundtracks always catch my attention.
-
I believe it's done via the Disk Management MMC snap-in.

Windows XP will not boot with two sticks of 512 MB DDR

Indeed. Sometimes they do odd things. Just for the sake of discussion, have you tried running MemTest86 on the newly installed RAM? I doubt it has errors, but by running that, it's completely ruled out. I generally run that overnight after I install new RAM, but that's hardly practical for everyone, just us overly paranoid geeks... -
Clutch, you wanted an inflammatory response? Let me give it a shot... I hate everyone! Of course that's such a farce...

Quote: yes good point - but likely by the words of this post, this person is not part of the MS beta testing if u know what i mean - otherwise they would know if it can be used and what ever. a good chance, and please correct me if i am wrong, but they likely download it froma source that claimed it was the final server 2003 - funny, since it is not even out yet. (rc2 i beleive?) Agreed. While I was not in the technicial beta of WS2003, I was in the CPP (which was completely FREE and OPEN TO ALL) and in the newsgroups, there were constant posts similar to the original, and there are several unoffical FAQs floating around on what services to enable, etc. to play games, get themes, have sound. As a member of the CPP, I had access to RC1 and RC2 ONLY. Also, the 'gold' code was released on Friday to MSDN as a trial/evaluation version. I suspect that will be the exact same copy distribuited at the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Launch Events coming next month. You all did sign up for that, right? Free all-day seminar, free eval copies of Windows Server 2003, Visual Studio .NET 2003, too.

Isn't the first rule something to the effect of 'If a hacker can get you to run his code on your computer, it's no longer your computer'? Why take such a security risk?

Quote: okay - i just copied the file to my root c drive and it works? (did not yesterday) so why only MSI files and not exe's? A little thing called 'Inherit permissions from parent folder'. The root folder has no parent, so I think (someone correct me if I am wrong...) that permissions are thereby removed.
-
I suspect even though you're copying the .msi/.exe the permissions are being retained. I think you'll need to reclaim ownership of that partition. As a trial, you could download a .msi file to your old partition (from the internet) and try to install it. Then re-download the same file to your new installation partition and try to install it. I know that you can download the .msi for MSN Messenger, so that may work as a trial for you.

I know there's an option for it... If it's not in the GUI try checking the .ini/.cfg files. I know I enabled it, but don't remember how. I've since uninstalled it, so I really can't check.

Hmm, could the 'problem' be releated to this thread? http://www.ntcompatible.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24647

It would be interesting to run SysInternal's RegMon while changing the settings as you prefer in Explorer, to see exactly which keys were altered. Ideally, this would be done on a clean install, such as what Gambler FEX just did with VMware. If I had the time, I would... Any volunteers?

Heh, yes... I love those 'features'. -
Quote: That's the difference between people who LOVE what they are doing and the people who do what they do for MONEY. It makes all the difference. Occasionally you find a company that combines both but that is the exception. I would agree, and point out the Linux community as an excellent example. Also, most SourceForge projects would fall into this category as well. On a related note, ChristianB from these forums is involved in the FreeDOS project, another good example of dedication to free software, and quality.

Well, I think that some of the polls are 'too good', meaning that all thats required is a few clicks. Not everyone will want to go into more detail than what is offered by a poll option. For example, if there was a poll about what anti-virus software you preferred, I would imagine there would be many votes, but considerably less comments, as the vote speaks for itself, albeit less vocally.

Quote: I juz bought Max payne..and i'm having errors wit installing it.. I brought the game to my other Win98SE pc...and it installed juz fine!! Quote: hmm....unfortunately..its w4r3z3d..ahha.... Too bad some people join the forums just to post garbage like this. Rainky, if you have questions or problems with legitimate software, I'm sure you will find most people here more than willing to help, and all for free, too. Most of us take it as an insult when you ask for help, and the information you provide is false. It simply wastes people's time. Also, it seems you have a fairly decent system. I have to wonder why you wouldn't just purchase the game if you enjoy it that much. Can't be more than about $30 USD by now.

Hmm, I wonder if a bootable CD distro like Knoppix would play DVDs. Don't have a DVD-ROM so I can't try it... I suppose you would need a CD-ROM/RW and a DVD drive to do that, though.

Mezron is right on the money... if you could Ghost the drive, you'd also have the drive overlay copied, which would surely hose the OS and saved data.

I haven't experienced this problem, but thanks PTS for the fix! I would've thought that would only apply in a domain environment with roaming profiles.

I just tried the NVidia 43.45 2k/XP Drivers: VERDICT inside!

Are they WHQL-Certified? -
Alternativly, have you used the 'Set Program Access and Defaults' under Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs to set the default browser?
-
NTFS permissions? Are you trying to install from a partition that was left over from before the format & reinstall?

And the accountant, no less...

Quote: Both XP and 2k rules - it depends what u are used to - period! just cause to one person Xp suxs, does not mean it does to others or vice - versa. TO be honest, this is such an OLD topic, that i don't think anyone really cares any more as people can make their own choices and decide for them selves via trial and error. I would not mind seeing a sticky here as i do on many other forums along the lines of: "no more XP vs 2k threads" "no more AMD vs Intel threads" because it is just the same crap over and over and over and over and over! and is usually a waste of bandwidth. I second that. Quote: 150 and 50 is not a comparable difference- i get that difference by running the test 2 or 3 times after reboots on the same machine. IIRC, there is an error margin of ~10% with any benchmark, so you would be correct with that.
