I wonder how many of the regulars here have prior military service, US or otherwise? If so, what was your branch of service and MOS?

need software to view the video input on my geforce4
adamvjackson replied to Four and Twenty's topic in Software
VirtualDub is free. If that isn't 'good enough' you can download a 30 day eval copy of Adobe Premiere. -
You could try extracting the 2k/xp driver files from drivers.cab, if you know what you're doing.

Quote: There's some people that registered almost four years ago, and never posted a single time. It would be nice to clear those out, but I don't think there's an easy way to do it. Actually, it's quite easy, in the PHPbb admin panel, you can purge users inactive for xxx days, IIRC.

Installing an inexpensive ATA100/133 PCI card easily gets around the 8/32GB bios limitations... But most ATA controllers require PCI 2.2 support, which many boards of the 8GB limitation-era do not support.

Windows XP will not boot with two sticks of 512 MB DDR
adamvjackson replied to Ali's topic in Hardware
As a sidenote, with my Asus P4B533-E (Intel 845-E Chipset) there are 3 slots, but in slots 2 and 3, only single-sided chips can be used in both, or a double-sided chip can go in slot 2. Slots 2 and 3 are 'shared' banks. I suspect this is a 'feature' of the 845 chipsets. -

Budious is correct, although I think the ie5setup.exe may differ from 5.01 to 5.5. The latest release of 5.5 IIRC is 5.5 SP2. The Microsoft page referenced by Google was a 404, but I found the Google cached copy here. A few minutes later... It seems IE 5.5 SP2 has entered extended support, and the download has been pulled from Microsoft's site. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/support/ie55exsupport.asp While it is an option, I would not recommend downloading from a third party.

In Windows 2000 (XP should be similar): Right-click on 'My Computer' Choose 'Properties' Select 'Advanced' tab Click 'Startup and Recovery...' button Uncheck 'Automatically reboot'
-
Uncheck the automatic reboot under advanced options under my computer properties. If you could post the stop/bsod message, it may help.

Quote: Hi, i am newbye-bye and i am afraid to move in win XP OS, help me out. Hi, welcome to the forums Quote: Now i am using Win 98SE and all works fine even most DOS games. I have SBLive! 1024 player sound card..does Win 98 drivers work with this card? No, you would need Windows XP drivers for your sound card, in addition to any other hardware devices. Quote: How many Service Packs are there? Just one. Quote: Do i get all CRITICAL patches with those Service Packs? I don´t have net access in my home so... There will be some on Windows Update after installation of XP SP1, but if you don't have internet access where the PC will be used, I wouldn't be too concerned, as most are patches for network/internet vulnerabilites. Quote: Is my computer GOOD gaming platform after moving to Win XP? Yes! Depending on the hardware limitations, anyway. Windows XP is great for gaming, and more stable than 98/98SE. Quote: Does those Service Packs solve most critical bugs? I mean, Win 98SE is enough, but how long developers support Win 98 that´s mystery. If I recall correctly, official Microsoft support for Windows 98 has ended. As I said above, the SP for XP does address most issues, but again, without connectivity, there's only so many vulnerabilites. Quote: If i want to remove Win XP is this possible: I have CD ROM DOS drivers,I boot in DOS mode and delete Windows XP and reinstall it...or install Win 98SE, again. or is Win XP pro bootable from CD, so i just could delete all windows files from HDD and boot from Win XP CD and reinstall it. The Windows XP CD is bootable, and I would personally suggest you dual boot with both operating systems until you are satisified with only using Windows XP, that way you can transfer your files, settings, etc. Quote: I heard that Win XP checks whole system and if i upgrade anything it won´t boot and i have to reinstall Win XP??? I can´t even change graphics card?? How about motherboard?? Is it must to go in net and register Win XP from there...i DON`T have net access in my home..or is there registration code like win 98 SE has?? Windows XP does have product activation, which can be completed over the phone with a Microsoft rep if you do not have internet access. If you change major hardware, you may be required to re-activate your installation. It does not lock you out, or require a format and reinstall. It does require a phone call to Microsoft, just with a quick explanation of why you need to reactivate. Also, if your hardware goes unchanged for 120 days (someone correct me if I am mistaken...) than that hardware profile is accepted as the 'standard' profile, and re-activation is not necessary. Quote: I have planned to buy Win XP Pro Good, software piracy does not pay. Quote: thanks No problem!

Everytime I use ad-aware to clean, I cannot connect...

Or as an alternative, running SFC /scannow. -
I would stick with the intergrated unless you need a feature such as PXE support, etc. that the onboard NIC does not have.

Sony trying to screw people out of rebates
adamvjackson replied to ThC 129's topic in Everything New Technology
That's good to hear, glad you got it resolved. -
I have built a few systems with the Antec SX-830 case and std. 300 watt power supply, they seem to be solid.

Quote: I assume that was 2 512MB sticks? 1GB has been selling for ~$500 US lately... I had meant on a single stick. 512MB can still be had for under $100 generally.
-
Sounds like a flaky or failing power supply to me. I would replace it.

Sony trying to screw people out of rebates
adamvjackson replied to ThC 129's topic in Everything New Technology
Best Buy is notorious for having rebate issues. I would suggest you talk to a manager there next time you're in, as they will often refund the rebate amount... ...If you complain loud enough, that is... Good luck. -

It rained here all day... Glad you were able to get outside and enjoy the day, though.

Well, the advantage of a higher end video card would be antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. Honestly I don't know if MAME natively supports AA/AF or if there is a compile that does, but when I switched on AA/AF in ZSNES the difference was amazing! Food for thought, anyway. P.S. The cabinet looks amazing! Reminds me of the four player Gauntlet style machine...

IIRC, actually, the Palomino referred to the .18 micron core which was used in the XP 1500-2000.
