Isn't that the idea behind trusted computing...? I agree with you, with your opinions on activation. If there are people who refuse to pay for an operating system, there are alternatives, such as BSD, Linux, etc. That being said, I suspect that the people already using illegitimate copies of Windows will most likely not switch to BSD, Linux, etc.

Quote: If you have any spare PCI slots just buy a cheap PCI sound card. I've seen Vibra 128 cards for about AUD$30. Don't bother with ISA. Also, for the sake of comparison, a SB16 PCI card runs about US $20.

Quote: The drive rails on all of them say Chieftec so there's your manufacturing answer. As do mine, for my SX-830... Which lead me to believe what I said above. Anyhow, you learn something every day! Quote: I don't care who distributed them as long as they are available. That's what's important...

Exchange 2003 / Office 11 / Windows Server 2003
adamvjackson replied to adamvjackson's topic in Software
No, but continued usage is prohibited by the EULA. -
Cheiftec is a manufacturer, Antec is a reseller. All Antec generally adds is an Antec power supply, and Antec case fans.

Exchange 2003 / Office 11 / Windows Server 2003

Good for one year, or until the final version is released, whichever comes first. -
Most, if not all, software recommends disabling anti-virus software prior to installation of the new software. Did you try this?

WHERE Windows XP store the autom. downloaded patches?
adamvjackson replied to mpower's topic in Everything New Technology
In Control Panel, you'll see a hotfix number, such as Q123456. Do a search on the computer with the modem in it for all files containing that hotfix number, that should turn up where the hotfixes are. -
Antec gets their cases from Cheiftec.

I seem to remember something in the MSKB about installshield errors. Have you run windows update, installed all latest patches, etc.?

Hopefully your IDE cables are long enough to reach your optical drives. I had that problem with a full tower case once.

Exchange 2003 / Office 11 / Windows Server 2003

Quote: I got confirmation of the kit I ordered being delivered. Should be good to see what changes there are. Did you install it on a bare PC or under something like vmware? I've done both. VMware Workstation is a great resource that is available, but far from the best for beta testing on, since it really only emulates hardware... Therefore, it limits the possibility of finding bugs. -
Exchange 2003 / Office 11 / Windows Server 2003

Well, the software has a 360-day timebomb, but according to the EULA, you are to stop using any beta/RC software when the final product becomes available for sale. Also, you are allowed 10 activations with the provided product keys, which means that you can install and activate it on 10 different machines, with unlimited reinstalls per machine. -
Windows uptime counter resets after like 7v 12h?
adamvjackson replied to Hipshot's topic in Software
The Windows uptime displayed will never reach 50 days. This is a deficiency of Windows, as the GetTickCount call (which is used to determine the uptime) returns the number of milliseconds since Windows was started as a 32-bit unsigned integer. This results in a maximum measurable uptime of 49 days, 17 hours, 2 minutes and 47 seconds. -
You should honestly get an inexpensive cable/dsl router, that would be a better solution than a crossover cable and ICS... Less headaches.
-
Out of curiousity, have you tried adjusting the server timeout option?

If the BIOS setting is set to have the OS provide the PnP, try changing it to BIOS.
-
Is the BIOS set for PnP? Does the ISA card have jumpers for an IRQ/DMA manual override?

I read on the compatibility list that The 7th Guest is compatible with 2000/XP, and I found a DirectX .exe for the game. I remember, though, that my primary compaint with the game ages ago was that the voice was too muffled. Does anyone know if there's a workaround for this? I lost my original copy years ago, but eBay came through! I should have this gem, and it's sibling, The 11th Hour soon!
-
Found something interesting (I have far too much time on my hands)... Check this out: Trilobyte was the company behind The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour... http://www.tbyte.com/ http://nis.idsoftware.com/ A WHOIS lookup confirmed that tbyte.com is registered to IDSOFTWARE. Thoughts anyone?
-
Ok, fans of the original 7th Guest and 11th Hour: you MUST watch this! Anyone know more info about this title, such as a release date? http://www.thecollectorgame.com It SOUNDS like "The Fat Man" is doing the score again! just the music from that site brings me back to yesteryear! Incredible score in those games!

Ok, the conspiracy theorist in me has to wonder if the review is a bit 'tainted' on the ATI leak... Thoughts, anyone?

Are you getting the mail from a local Exchange server? If so, which version, 5.5/2000/2003?
-
Hmm, that's a tough one... You see, Windows 'Longhorn' isn't in beta yet, based off of my opinion(s) I suspect it will be in beta Q3-Q4 2003. In order to sign up for beta testing, you have to nominate yourself, usually by signing in as a guest at http://www.betaplace.com. Usually, there is a specific username/password that you must sign in as in order to nominate yourself. Where do you get the username/password, you ask? That's a good question... If you frequent many Microsoft-based news sites, as I do, the information is usually posted in the news sections. If anyone else knows of another way to get the username/passwords, please let us know! You stand the best chance of being accepted into a Microsoft beta program if you have actively done beta testing for them in the past. Actively, meaning that you did more than just install the release, you provided feedback, prehaps found a bug or two, etc. Personally, I just got accepted into my first Microsoft beta program, for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, so I'm a bit excited about that. The nominations for that were back in November and December, so I'm afraid that you can't be in that one, unless they reopen it. Best of luck, if you have more questions, just post... Adam

A Program like norton internet security just not as bloated
adamvjackson replied to ThC 129's topic in Everything New Technology
I switched from ZoneAlarm to Sygate Personal Firewall... It seems much more configurable.
