I think it's funny when I see OEM reps recommending the reformatting/restoring of the original OS. Against what many would think, this is not because XP SP1 is so bad, it's just that either: A. They will only support the original OS, and will not try to troubleshoot anything else. B. A copout, the rep either doesn't know how to fix the problem, or is looking to get the customer off the phone as quickly as possible, as that is one of the primary performance evaluation standards. FYI, the quotes from the OEM reps in the link provided above is what got me started on this rant, but I think it applies to so many places.

Enabling Hyperthreading on non Hyperthreaded p4'2
adamvjackson replied to tweaked's topic in Hardware
I had previously recieved an email from an Intel rep (this was about 3 months ago) that confirmed that Hyperthreading was present in all of the 'B' revision P4's (533MHz bus) and could be enabled at a later date with a bios update. -
Any word on if Office XP SP1/SP2 addressed this issue? Has this been determined to be a Microsoft or Hollywood problem? Anything from either company admitting to a problem/incompatibility?

No problems here, only minor complaint is that it generally takes 4-5 days for PayPal funds to xfer to my bank account, but no problems or major complaints here.

Just a heads-up, but you might want to check to see which PCI revision is req'd by the Geforce4 MX line, I believe it's 2.2, which isn't supported by all boards.

Does WinAmp need any plugins or additional settings for 4 channel output?

Windows 95a Registry Value Needed (Quick and Easy)

Testing my memory, I believe when SP1 was applied to a new retail 95 install, it would read 95A, FYI. -
Memtest86 is one of the best memory testers I have ever seen, plus it's free!

How do you have your connections made? Often with intergrated sound with mulitiple channels, you have to reassign one of the other ports (line in or mic) as the rear channel. If you post some more information, I can probably be more specific...

Anyone else remember parents and school groups getting 'up in arms' over Wolfenstien 3D?

Microsoft has a HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) for all WHQL-Certified hardware, available here. This is the most recent revision, dated 10-29-2002.

I've also heard that multiplayer may be added later, as a mission pack, perhaps that will have a client/server setup.

IMO, the single player (based off the demo) is just multiplayer with bots. I personally just started playing BF:1942 online about 2 weeks ago, and yes, there are quite a few people who want to ruin the fun for others. What you should do is try to find a server with fewer people, and more regular players. I would recommend a server with maybe 8 players as a max, as it seems with fewer players, there is less tolerance for that type of stuff. Also, having an admin nearby never hurts, either.

Well, this is a totally biased response, but I used to work for an HP-Authorized service center, and we always recommended the use of HP cartridges, not the remans or refills. Have you used these cartridges before? I would assume that the quality of the ink could vary significantly, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the note about the sig..

Let me clairify what I meant: most home users do not run Norton AntiVirus 7.6/8.0 Corporate Edition as this is geared for a domain environment, same said for McAfee NetShield/ePolicy Orchestrator; And also most domain controllers do not run AVG antivirus. This is what I meant by breaking the tests down to 'home' and 'corporate' editions. Also, if you were going to go that far in the testing, you may wish to include the server side updates and the software's ability to push updates. With regards to your test results, they look very interesting... When I get home from work, I will review these more thoroughly.

WINDOWS XP PCs running on Windows NT 4.0 server
adamvjackson replied to Jim.Fellows's topic in Everything New Technology
It look like I am going to have to start drinking more coffee, earlier, so I can fully pay attention to what I am reading... -
I'm looking forward to your report, VirusP. Based upon your experience and your opinion, what would you recommend currently? How do you think your recommendation will fare in your testing? [Edit] I would recommend, depending on how extensive your testing is, that you have 2 different classes per-say; One for 'home' and one for 'corporations'. [/Edit]

WINDOWS XP PCs running on Windows NT 4.0 server
adamvjackson replied to Jim.Fellows's topic in Everything New Technology
Actaully it will depend on if the domain is running static IPs or dynamic, correct? -
Have you tried printing the HP printer calibration sheet? Have you calibrated it according to the printout?

Windows 2000 installation and promise ata 100 problem
adamvjackson replied to aegris's topic in Hardware
Thanks for the heads up, I was wondering when that was going to be released. -
My understanding of the out-of-the-box multiplayer is that it will be 4 player max, and everyone has to join at the same time. What I get out of that, is that it will be geared to co-op play, and possibly peer-to-peer.

This is just an idea, but you may be able to find a PCI-PCMCIA adapter card, I've even seen some that will connect to the front drive panel. With this PCMCIA slot, you could get an adapter to accept CompactFlash cards. Not the best idea, and I would probably recommend upgrading to Windows 2000 first, but it is an idea.

I agree, anything less that 100-120KB/Sec and I feel 'cheated'..

Honestly though, not many people legitimately have access to .NET yet... unless they're either beta testing it or have signed up for the CPP.
