The way that I've gotten around the drive letter problem, is by forcing a letter with mscdex. I'm sure that there are probably some freeware utils out there that will detect the drive letter, and map it to a variable, but I find it easier to just specify a drive letter. I usually use X, Y, or Z... but whatever would work.

Quote: On the subject of uplink ports, I don't know if it is just my switches or all... but it seems that when something is in a uplink port that the port right next to it does not function. Most uplink ports are shared with the port directly next to it. Not all... But most, even more so with 'consumer line' networking equipment.

Are you using a print server appliance or is it shared on another machine? If shared on another pc, does that pc have proper accounts set up?

I see no one has replied in about two weeks, so I guess I'll give it a shot. Have you tried replacing the nic yet? How about a clean os install? Replaced the cat5 cable from the closest patch panel/hub/switch? Just some ideas, let me know how you make out.

NV18 & NV28:NVIDIA Chips with AGP-8x Flavor - a waste?

IMO, it's just marketing... it could seemingly make those cards more desirable. -
System slows down when copying a file through the nwteork
adamvjackson replied to Tomay's topic in Networking
OK, I rather suspect it may be a limitation of your nic, but here's something fairly quick and easy to try before you go nic shopping. In the folder options in Windows Explorer, look for an option to open each window in a new process. Select that, and restart windows. If there is no improvement, then what I suspect is that similar to a winmodem, the nic you have is almost entirely software driven and system processor dependant. If that's the case, you'll need to get a high-end nic, such as an intel or 3com. The isa nic that you tried is not dependant on the os, that's why there were no problems. -
First, you'll need a Win98 boot disk. Assuming that you have this already, you must copy the entire contents of the Win98 cd to a temp directory. If you have the boot disk that came with the boxed Windows 98 cd, then you're ready to start your cd writing application. If not, you'll need to edit the last line of the autoexec.bat file to launch setup from the cdrom drive. Depending on what cd writing software you have, it will be a bit different, but you will start a new 'project' and choose to create a bootable cd. Insert your bootdisk when prompted. Add the entire contents of the temp directory where you copied the cd contents earlier. You should be all set then.

IE explorer Q: how do i open with a maximized browser?
adamvjackson replied to mguseli's topic in Legacy OS
Quote: Hold down the "shift" key when you exit the window and it will open maximized. Also works with Windows Explorer, and some other programs, too. Shift-Alt-F4 for you keyboarders... -
M4: Looks good... I'll have to check that out when a demo is released. Immortal: About Doom 3, yeah, I am prepared to wait, from the screenshots, it looks as though it will be worth the wait! I've been playing the Doom and Quake series since the first of each came out, so waiting is nothing new. Mr.Guvernment: If Quake 3 is too slow for your liking, I'd really like for you to take a look at CPMA (Promode). It's a modification for Quake 3 that allows for fast weapon switching, ability to change direction while in midair (like QuakeWorld) and many other improvements and bugfixes over regular Quake 3. I can provide a link, if you're interested to some Promode game demos, they're unbelievable. This mod breathed new life back into Quake 3. pmistry: I agree with your opinions on Quake 3 and UT/UT2k3. I actually downloaded and installed the demo for UT2k3, and IMO, is requires less 'skill' than Quake 3. In Q3, aim is of the upmost importantance, whereas in UT2k3, it seems as though the weapons were designed to be 'accurate enough' where aim is less, if at all, important. The general weapons seemed to be what I would consider 'spamming' weapons, not skill-based weapons. Sorry for the long rant, but hey, I did give UT2k3 an honest shot... I just think it fell short.

Mandrake 9.0 and VMware 3.2 - dos it work??
adamvjackson replied to Ben-DK's topic in Everything Linux
Using VMware 3.1.1 here, I installed Mandrake 9 without any problems. There is native support for the VMware emulated video card. When I installed, I chose 800x600x8, with the vmware card chosen. -
M4, what's freelancer?

Do you get that error with the drivers included with the hardware, and drivers downloaded from the manufacturer's web sites? Did you do a clean os install yet?
-
Marktait, I have pretty much that exact system, except for a few components, and just an FYI, when you order ram, you can really only use the first 2 ddr slots, as the third is shared with the 2nd. So for 1GB, you'll either need a 1gb stick or 2 512 sticks. The third slot can only be used if a single-sided chip is used in slot 2 and a single-sided chip is in slot 3.

Why in SpiderMan TheMovie Game only some levels will freeze?
adamvjackson replied to imtim2's topic in Games
Sorry must've missed that... Anyway, there's an update to version 1.1 out, have you updated yet? If not, the update can be had here: http://www.fileplanet.com/files/80000/87745.shtml The update is supposed to fix a handful of problems, but I couldn't seem to find a list of what problems were addressed. -
I am not voting, I am waiting for Doom 3 & Quake 4.. Patiently waiting...

Quote: And on the uplink to regular port... I think that is supposed to be a straight through cable, but if connecting two switches or hubs; or a switch and a hub together without using an uplink port on either device I think you can use a cross-over cable. Not sure but I think you can. That's correct, although in my opinion, it's always preferable to use an uplink port. FYI, I picked up a new netgear 8 port switch a few weeks ago, and supposedly *all* the ports are auto-sensing for uplink. Cool, huh..

Hellbringer, does your isp offer any free webspace? You should consider having your computer spec's on a link...

Sounds good... you may want to make a diagram of what partitions will have what operating systems on it... that way it's easy to forsee problems.
-
Ranish Partition Manager is similar to PartitionMagic, but nowhere as good or easy to use, in my opinion. Yeah it should be fairly easy to put all your dos utils on a boot cd, except that disk2 of partitionmagic actually writes to the floppy, so you'll need to set up a ramdrive and extract the PM program files to the ramdrive, otherwise you'll get an error. I've sucessfully done this about a year ago, so it is doable.

Which Windows for my system?
adamvjackson replied to DragonZeal's topic in Everything New Technology
Well, I run 2k pro on all my machines, and I think it's just great. However, if you're buying a new os, then it's generally best to get the newest, as far as lifetime roi (return on investment). XP will be supported longer than 2k, this is inevitable, so that's why. If you already have a license for 2k that isn't in use, then by all means I recommend 2k... It's just that if you have to buy a new license, buy the latest. -
Here's a link to the manual: http://www.americas.creative.com/support/manuals/Files/Audigy.pdf Check page 16 for a good diagram of the ports.

OK.. just checked the help file, and when used in analog mode, the digital/analog output (the port furthest from the firewire connection) will output the center/sub channels. In digital mode, the same port offers front SPDIF, rear SPDIF, and center/sub SPDIF. Note that this port utilizes a 4 pole mini-jack plug. If you have the audigy software installed, there's a good diagram of what I just typed in the help file. Contents->Hardware Information->Connectors and Pin Assignments->Analog/Digital Out
