Also, Maxtor has released some new IDE drives with 80GB per platter... A 320GB drive is going to be released soon, if not already. On a sour note, Maxtor has lowered their warranties from 3 years to 1 year.... 8)

Also, are you using heat transfer compound, such as Artic Silver, or are you using a pad? I've seen Artic Silver drop a cpu temp 1-2 degrees cel. In that regard, it's worth the $7-9 US that a tube of Artic Silver costs.

An excellent idea, Four and Twenty, I'm interested to know two things: 1. Has anyone done this sucessfully? 2. I would assume that you'd have to reboot after merging the registry settings, correct?

Zero0w, I'd have to agree on the level of dedication the Mandrake team is putting in... I'm definately going to be taking a look at the final. Any word on the status of Red Hat 8.0?

What error messages where you getting during the dump?

Also, interestingly enough, with RC2, Microsoft is going to change the name to .Net Server 2003... Well, ok.. it's not that interesting.

Found another program, Hypersnap DX. You can check it out here: http://www.hyperionics.com/hsdx/index.asp

How about snagit? http://www.techsmith.com/products/snagit/default.asp

Does your motherboard support variable fan speeds? Is there an option in your bios? In Win2k/XP, CPUSTOP instructions are sent when the cpu is idle, so software such as cpuidle is (imo) not going to do too much for you. On my P4, there is only about 4-5 degrees cel. difference between load and idle. If heat's an issue, personally, I'd upgrade your HSF. After looking for only a few minuites, I found this HSF that'd probably help out a lot: http://www.thermaltake.com/products/heatsink/v9.htm

Not sure if you've fixed the problem or not, but here's what I used to fix a friends pc with the same problem. Open up each applicable folder (using quake iii arena as an example) and if the q3config.cfg file is read-only, remove that attribuite. If not, try either deleting that file, or renaming it. As I said, this may not work for you, but it DID fix the same problem I encountered on a friend's pc. Good Luck.

Duhmez, did you ever reach a solution? Did anything posted here help? -
Oops! I guess I was just thinking of Windows 2000 Advanced Sever.. Sorry for the confusion.

Windows 2000 SP3 causes problem with scsiport.sys driver
adamvjackson replied to akonst's topic in Software
As far as I know, the driver is the same for both the ata100 and the ata133 cards. I sent maxtor esupport an email about the driver incompatibility, but I doubt I'll hear a response. So in other words, if your ata133 controller won't function like you need it to, neither will your ata100. Also, I do have both of the mentioned cards. -
What a cool idea... now if only someone would do something similar with Quake 3!! Sorry, but I am not a UT fan...

Perhaps net-2-phone can to something like that... Honestly, IMO, I wouldn't recommend your setup, though. I don't think the sound quality will be very good, keep in mind that in addition to transferring the audio, there are data packets too. I think it's a bandwidth issue, here. Anyway, I'd give net-2-phone a shot. I think that there may be a way to do that with Microsoft's NetMeeting, too. Unsure about that, though. Good Luck.

Not sure if you've tried this yet, but hey, give it a shot, I guess! Try disabling your soundcard then loading Quake. Perhaps XP is trying to have some type of sound card emulation? Just a shot in the dark, really, but I'm about out of ideas.... ;(

If you plan on recording Quake 3, you can just record a normal demo, and convert it to an .avi later... There are some third party apps available to do so. Not sure if that's what you're looking for, so I didn't bother to track down links... But I will, if you want.

TDK and Yamaha seem to make the best overall drives, IMO. If price is an issue, I'd get a Lite-On drive, also good quality, but they can be hard to find, as they rarely sell under the brand Lite-On, usually something a bit more generic, such as BusLink.

Quote: You guys do realise just how bad the mx200 is dont you? Its like the most castrated card known to man....ever. Personally, I'd give that award to the TNT2.

Nothing in the power toys, huh?

Any idea if there's drivers for MS' force feedback joystick?
adamvjackson replied to Jason B's topic in Games
You'll want to check at a local computer store to verify this, but I believe some versions of the MS Wheels had a Game=>USB converter cable. I had that very cable, in fact, until last time I cleaned up my spare parts... 8) Had I still had it, I could've sent it to you.... -
The: What Computer Part did you buy this week thread
adamvjackson replied to DosFreak's topic in Slack Space
Yeah, Lite-On drives are generally good quality, but often sold under different brand names. I've had good luck with Lite-On cdrw drives, been able to read subchannel data correctly, too. -
corrupt desktop theme - can not see anything
adamvjackson replied to Mat1920's topic in Customization & Tweaking
How about installing new video drivers, in safe mode? I've found that a corrupt or missing desktop can be fixed with a driver update. -
Using .Net Advanced Server here... isn't it cool? Really, in order to fully 'play' around with it, you'll need to set up a domain controller, with active directory. The 'Manage your server' is a great place to start.

There was another thread where a user had some problems with a santa cruz... After doing a bit of research, I found out that it seems to have compatibility issues with certian chipsets. Make sure you have the lastest OS drivers for the sound card, and the latest bios for your board. Next, I'd check your motherboard manufacturer's site, to see if other owners of your board have similar problems. Good Luck.
