Sound Blaster PCI 128 (CT4700) screams and hard locks XP PC
adamvjackson replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Hardware
Are you having the bios configure PnP or the os? -
Quote: What is the RC2 appelation ? RC1 or RC2 Generally refers to 'Release Canidate'. These are generally released after private betas, and are available to the public. RC1 comes before RC2.. I personally haven't seen any release canidate go above 2 before it goes 'Gold' or official.

Quote: heh, you couldn't even pay me to switch back to 2000 now. I gave up on that POS a year ago and have no intention of ever going back. 2000 is more hassle than its worth. What exactly do you mean, POS? Was it unstable on your system? Difficult to use? Please help me understand your perspective... Elaborate.

I am not in front of 'my' machine, as I am at work, but this should be close! Go to the control panel, and switch to the classic view, if applicable. Open the users icon, look for a tab on the top of the dialog box that says advanced, or something similar. There should be a box checked that says something to the effect of "Assume the following user is always logged on" Uncheck that, and create a new user account, as necessary. You may also wish to require users to press CTRL-ALT-DEL prior to logging on. That option will be near where the "Assume..." option is. Again, sorry if this isn't 100% dead-on... I am on a Win98 box at work!

What did you determine finally got it fixed, just out of curiousity?
-
Are you getting an error message, or does it seemingly install correctly, but not function?

As for good drink coasters, by the way, try using either AOL cds or MSN cds.

Quote: BECAUSE ITS TOO **** EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!! When MS get real and start charging reasonable prices for their stuff (and no, USD$330 is not a reasonable price) they might just see a portion of their piracy problem disappear. And as for 2000, thats only good for use as drink coasters now Perhaps part of the reason Microsoft Software is so expensive to due to piracy. Food for thought, anyway. As for 2000 being used as drink coasters, I am going to disagree with you on that. Many large businesses are still running NT 4.0 on both servers and workstations.

Red Hat 7.0? The current version is 7.3, with 7.4 in beta now. Was there a reason for choosing an older version? Anyway, I believe you are correct, BootMagic is included with PartitionMagic. It's not really necessary, but if you do frequent os installation or partition changes, it's a worthwhile tool. I believe the trial versions of PartitionMagic are read-only, so that probably wouldn't work for you. I do know, however, that both VMware and Virtual PC offer trial versions, with full functionality, if you're interested in going that route. I first installed linux in a virutal machine, so that i could become more comfortable with it before I made physical changes to any partitions.

Sound Blaster PCI 128 (CT4700) screams and hard locks XP PC

Is a soundcard upgrade out of the question? I have an Audigy in one of my systems, and after a driver update it plays nice with XP/.NET... An Audigy can be had for about $80 US, possibly cheaper if you shop around. -
Oh I'm sorry... One more important thing: Before you do anything major involving partitions, MAKE A BACKUP!!
-
What distro and version of linux are you planning on installing? Have you considered using a 'Virtual Machine' such as VMware or Virtual PC? If you must dual boot, I would recommend you get a 3rd party boot loader, such as PowerQuest's BootMagic... Bare minimum though, there will be a boot loader on most builds of linux, so all you would need to do is resize your current partition, if applicable. Hope that gets you started.. If you need more information, let me know. Best of luck.

What's the verdict on SP3, then?
adamvjackson replied to packman's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I personally liked the 440bx chipset better than the 81x... Seemed more stable, IMO, and didn't have the 512MB 81x limitation. I still have a 440bx based board, the Asus CUBX... with 1GB ram, used as a light server. Very stable. -
Ok, so Mandrake 9 final will be released this weekend? I thought I had initially read the 16th.. Monday..

How do I re-enable CD-ROM AutoRun in Windows 2000?
adamvjackson replied to Christianb's topic in Networking
After looking for it for a while, I got it. Open up regedit, and locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Cdrom Change value from 0 to 1 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\Cdrom Change value from 0 to 1 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom Change value from 0 to 1 Good Luck. -
SB Live! Use windows drivers or Creative drivers?
adamvjackson replied to Four and Twenty's topic in Hardware
Unless you want 5.1, I'd stick with the MS reference drivers. -
Need a decent program to replicate my hard disks plz..
adamvjackson replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Hardware
ServerImage? I think I had a demo of that, I believe it came on either the DriveImage CD... or maybe it was on the PartitionMagic CD. I hadn't used it, since it is a demo, and I really don't have a "sever" set up. I would imagine to get the most out of a program such as ServerImage, you would need to have multiple raid arrays. -
Motherboard (Asus P4B533-E) has intergraded 6 channel audio with the C-Media 8738 Chipset. Using the drivers for Windows XP listed on the Asus site, I cannot get sound in .Net Enterprise Server. Driver is installed fine, no bangs listed in Device Manager. Everything seems installed fine, but I get system beeps from the internal pc speaker. I dual-boot that machine with 2k pro, (Different drivers, of course) and it works fine. Anyone have any ideas? By the way, it's RC1, Build 3663. If no one knows, I'll cross-post this on the .Net Enterprise Server newsgroup. Thanks in advance.

Initially, I wasn't that impressed... I just thought it was 2k server, with an XP interface... As I use it more, I am more and more impressed with some of the features that MS has implemented. Unfortunately, this "ease of use" may allow too many new network admins! LOL.

The GTS really isn't a bad card, I have a Geforce2 ti in my secondary system... Granted, no pixel shaders, but it's a good card, you can pick them up for about $50 US new...

Just a follow-up; worked just as you described. Thanks again.

Service Pack 3... I had the same problem as another user with regards to the Promise PCI ATA/133 driver incompatibility... So this weekend, guess what? A format and reinstall with SP2.... -
Good choices, I have a Geforce4 Ti4400, and it rocks.. I just hope that Doom 3 will be "playable" on this card... At an acceptable quality/resolution anyway...

Hopefully no one will shun my idea, but I really like PowerQuest's DriveImage 2002. I've never had it fail, even on client's computers where the old drive had many bad sectors. DriveImage 2002 and PartitionMagic 7.0 should be in every technician's toolbox. The software costs about $65 US each, but well worth every dollar. My $.02. Thanks.
