    Windows XP won't boot

I tried bootlogging, but it won't make a log for the regular boot attempt to Windows, it only logs the boot into Safe Mode, where I don't find it unusual that the log states many drivers not being loaded.
  2. The boot process goes as far as just after the screen with the XP logo and the horizontal loading bar, then the screen goes black. At this point the computer hangs. It's not an issue of corrupt video drivers cuz i uninstalled them and tried to boot in VGA mode, and that didn't change a thing. I made an ERD a lil while back, but I don't have my Windows XP cd right now because one of my brothers borrowed it. Any suggestions would be great.
  3. Motherboards: MSI 875P NEO-FIS2R vs. Abit AB-IC7-MAX3 vs. ASUS P4C800-E DELUXE Video Cards: ATI PowerColour Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB vs. ATI Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB (roughly same price) Which is the best in each category? The goal is maximum performance for a gamer pc.

    What is efes.exe

I found out that it's a polymorphic virus named W32.BugBear.B@mm !! It is fairly serious because it allows the virus author to control your PC, start or stop process, etc. etc. and it's also a keylogger which sends off all you typings to one of many predefined email addressed every 2 hours. It is treatable since the June 5th, 2003 Norton Anti-Virus update.
  5. A few days ago a file named efes.exe showed up on my comp, in the All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder under Documents & Settings, which I have no idea of its purpose or danger. It also seemed to show up on my bro's comp the same day.
  6. When I try to open the Internet Options from Internet Explorer, I get the message: "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." This is funny because I'm the administrator and the only person who uses my computer. I've read posts about people getting this message when doing something in Outlook, but that's not the case here. How do you take the restriction away?
  7. It seems I can at last delete the sound files, but only when I attempt to after several hours since their creation and even then there's only a fraction of a chance it will work. The file I deleted the soonest from its creation was after 4 hours.
  8. After recording a few things from a tape deck, using my soundcard ofcourse, I can't delete some sound files I don't need. Every time I attempt to delete any of them I get a "Error Deleting File or Folder" error, stating that I "Cannot delete [FILE]: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use." That's total BS! Even when I don't have any programs running, not in the background and especially not the program I was recording with, I still get the error stated above. I have even restarted the computer without any luck. I'm running Windows 2000 with SP3 installed. Please, I need a solution A.S.A.P. because I need the hard drive space for more recordings.
  9. How do I get rid of Document and Settings folders links in the start menu? When I attempt to delete them, the actually folder on the hard drive go to the recycle bin as well. The folders are not for applications, they are documents and settings folders for users. They don't act like shortcuts because when I attempt to delete them, the folders are removed from the Documents and Settings directory and they even look like real folders from the properties. If it matters, I notice that there is a new folder within the Documents and Settings directory called Programs, with a subfolder named Startup.
  10. Quote: No... and yes! Depends on what you want to do... I'll turn you onto something that WON'T work right or anymore IF you turn it off: 1.) Turn it off for kicks / experiment 2.) Now, try to use your Local Connections in XP (You'll have troubles... or should!) * APK P.S.=> Now, once you get your local connections all straight (like me I only have one connection to the wire so I do turn it off), you can do without it... but if you have to mess with it? You need it on afaik... apk I disabled them both, and its dependancy the Telephony service, rebooted my computer and everything along with my Internet connection and home network work just fine. The computer even seems to run slightly better.
  11. Is the Remote Access Connection Manager service and Remote Access Auto Connection Manager, running in the background of Windows 2000, really necessary?
  12. Quote: If you've got another computer networked to yours, try moving known good compressed files back and forth. Then extract and see if they still work. I copied a known good compressed file to a networked computer, confirmed a good CRC there, and then copied it back again to my computer. The file kept getting CRC errors on my computer. When I went to the other computer and checked the CRC of the file it was good every time. I'm now pretty sure my NIC is to blame, but have I really narrowed it down to that?

    VIA chipset issues?

Quote: I've read people express various opinions on VIA chipset motherboards, including the well-known issue of conflicts between the chipset and Soundblaster cards (I was under the impression that the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers fixed this. Is that correct?). I was wondering if there were any other known issues that I should be aware of, especially with the Asus A7V333R motherboard, and other KT333 boards? Can you specify these issues? I am having serious issues with my computer and I have a VIA chipset and SoundBlaster Live! card as well.
  14. Quote: A friend of mine had problems with large downloads being corrupted; turned out to be his ethernet card going bad. Is there any way I can test my ethernet card to see if it has gone bad?
  15. Quote: Also what Inet connection are you using to connect? Do the downloads finish downloading? I'm using Bell Sympatico High Speed Edition (ADSL) and all the downloads finish, with the expected file sizes.
