    free software

Everyone wants free software! Free software, I don't know if any. But others on this forum have used Win4Lin,which will do this for you, but it costs. http://www.netraverse.com/ But the question is, why not just use Kmail? You can import your messages from the Windows system. By the way, your question about modems...it will be very difficult to find a Linux modem for under $25.00. What you essentially need is a hard modem, which are had to come by. I did find one for under $25.00, but here in the US. Or, you may find one on Ebay, if you have access. Do a search on this forum for winmodem or just modem and you will find some possibilities, but maybe not for under $25.00. What you need is a hard modem. If it says winmodem of softmodem, these will not work, Perhaps some others have gotten some winmodems, or linmodems to work, but I have not tried this. Dapper Dan had a suggestion on an Actiontek modem that works and I used to use a Diamond SupraExpress 56e, the "e' is important, which means external, which generally means that it has the hardware onboard. It connects through the serial port. You do not want the USB or MAC version, be careful! If you don't find one, send me a PM, as I still have my modem, whch is not in use and may still work, I have not used it in some time. Also, look at the following; http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CDIMM00131-PB

connecting to interent through other comp?

I assume that you have a router? If so, what you need is hardware, either another wireless PCMCIA card, or if the other system has a NIC card, connect the system to the router via a cat 5 cable. Win XP will usually take care of the rest, unless you have the system encripted via the wireless router.

    Network

Ok, let's see if I have this correct. You have a hub, cable modem and 2 NIC cards. What chipset are the NIC cards and onboard LAN? This is how I have mine set up. All with cat 5 cables. NO usb! 1. Cable modem ---> Primary Router connection. 2. Win XP via NIC --> router 3. Linux box via NIC--> router

    lilo bootmanager

Looks like Lilo is set to boot from the second hard drive. So, when it looks for the drive and it is not there, you get the error. Lilo probably should have been installed on the first hard drive, where the master boot record is. I assume the first drive is set up as master and the second as slave? Look at Lilo.conf and see if the boot device is set for hdb rather than hda. If it is, this is the problem.
  5. I'll mirror (pun intended) what Dapper Dan said about Mandrake's partitioning capabilities. PartitionMagic is always good to have around for disasters. But this is an interesting question. I never tried this, but you peaked my interest. So, Drive Image did mirror image the whole drive, including the Mandrake partition? I also do not know about mirroring the drives using Linux/Mandrake, except for Linux only systems. Partimage is a linux package that will make a compressed file backup of the Linux partition, but I don't Know about a windows partition. What I would do is ask the Mandrake folks, since you are considering buying their fine products. Perhaps they can shed some light on the request and point you in the right direction.

    Network Red Hat 7

Quote: the internet sharing works well with me dialing up from xp and red hat using it well. First, give a little more information on your systems. When you say dialing up, do you mean that you have internet sharing through your network cards or are you using dial-up through modems?

The first possible issue looks like it it not a problem, sata drives, The LAN most requires the NVIDIA drivers for the nforce chipset. See the following link; http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/showproduct.php?product=70

    drivers

Try; http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/ On the left, go to the download section.
  10. The last that I looked, the only NVIDIA drivers that were compatible with the 2.6.0 kernel were the video drivers. The chipset drivers may not have caught up yet with the new kernels. What does the NVIDIA website say?

    total size of the CD's

I'm not sure what your getting at, but let's try this. When you download the iso's the size on the site may not exactly match the size of the iso that you download. You can check the validity by running the md checksum utility to see if the iso's that were downloaded are valid downloads (that they downloaded intact.

    kde 3.2 for Mandrake 9.1

He could also go to the KDE 3.2 web page and use Konstruct. which installs from source. The thing to remember, is that it is wise to install from Gnome or a console, to properly set KDE up. http://developer.kde.org/build/konstruct/ BTW, there is KDE 3.2 for Debian Woody in the news archive. I have to see where that is at, since I also have Debian Woody. http://www.linuxcompatible.org/story26261.html and sid; http://www.linuxcompatible.org/story26270.html

    only checking...

A few possible issues. Make sure, as mentioned by LnxAddct, that you are not burning the iso only, you have to burn the image, so when you look at the files on the CD, you do not see the single iso file, but a list of install directories and files. CDRW disks can be a problem at times, depending on the drive reading them, or poor quality CDRW's. In my experience, CD-R disks are more reliable. In terms of booting from USB/external drives, maybe, I don't know regarding installing linux. I do not have one. You can also try, if your bios supports it, choosing CD-USB as the first boot device in the bios set-up and see what happens.

XP and Linux problem! Need help here...

If my memory serves me correctly, during the install, you should have been given the option to install grub or lilo as a bootloader. You may have been discouraged from doing so with a warning that if you had another OS on the system, to do "nothing." Of course, if you also elected not to make a boot disk, or install the bootloader, then there is no way to boot Linux as the master boot record is not overwritten with lilo or grub. So, there is no way to boot the distro, unless you have another linus system and add the appropriate entires to lilo or grub. DapperDan uses RedHat and may be able to give you some guidance in this area. There may be a boot disk image file on the first CD that will work.
  15. This problem generally occurs when you have a motherboard with highpoint raid enabled in the bios. I just simply disabled raid in the bios and the install completed.

    kde 3.2 for Mandrake 9.1

I took a quick look around and did not find any 9.1 rpm´s, which means that they may not have been developed yet. Just be aware that KDE 3.2 may muck up your RedHat menu system somewhat, such as quick access to your control settings in Mandrake. I would keep an eye on this site and see if someone compiles some RPM´s. Usually KDE does not make binary rpm´s, but relies on others to do so.

XP and Linux problem! Need help here...

During the install, did you install a bootloader, or choose to make a floppy boot disk?
  18. danleff

    only checking...

Just make sure that when you burn the CD's that you use the "burn image" feature of your burning software to burn the ISO's. Also, burn them at a slow speed, such as 8X. Trust me, this will prevent any burn errors.

    CompactFlash Reader

I remeber reading on the Puppy forum that multicard readers can be a problem. I seems that Linux will pick up the first slot only, or whatever is designated as slot 1. So, if the type of card that you have is not the first slot on the reader, then this could be the issue. The first slot would probably be sda1, or sdb1 if you have a zip drive or other usb stick attached to the system. Check dmesg and see if gets picked up and designated as sda or sda1.
  20. This is exactly what I had to do, buy a router. I also read that it is indeed possibly a problem with the MAC address. If you want to be bold, try resetting the cable modem (see the directions that come with the modem - usually this means turning of the modem for a few minutes, then plug it back in and try to boot to linux). See if eth0 gets picked up during boot by choosing to view the startup messages during boot. Do you know what brand/chip is in the NIC card that you currently have?

    lilo bootmanager

Could you give a little more information - what is the error that you are getting? Did you install lilo on the MBR or on the Linux partition? When using lilo, does an option for Windows come up as a choice in lilo? Is there a reason why you are disconnecting the second hard drive? For example, is it an external or internal drive?
  22. The first thing that you may want to do is see if your wireless card is supported. Go to the Mandrake site and look for your card to see if it is supported in their hardware database. Secondly, there seems to be some issues with the notebook and Mandrake 9.2. See; http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/archive/30/2003/12/4/99349 Do a search on linux Compaq NX9005 or mandrake Compaq NX9005 on Google and see what comes up. For example, I found the following; http://emeitner.f2o.org/nx9005/ And the wireless card will probably need some work. See; http://www.linuxcompatible.org/cdetail11199.html

    A really fast graphical browser!

Nice, Dapper Dan. i just tried this out. Pretty good resource for those older systems.
  24. danleff

    which one to choose.

OK, I see one issue, the nForce motherboard. The older distros just won't work with it out of the box. The other issue is the LG writer, it has issues with Mandrake 9.2 that can trash the cdrw. Look at SUSE Pro, as Dapper Dan mentioned and Fedora as alternatives. On the nForce board, do you know if you have a sata drive and if it is enabled in the bios? If not sata, good. This will be less of a hassle. I have Mandrake 10 and Fedora running on my nForce board, no problems. But, my hard drives are not sata. Also, look at your writer in Windows, Fedora, orSUSE and see if it can read cd's.

    K3B probs...

I think I might see one of the issues here. If you did an apt-get upgrade, you may have upgraded to sarge or sid. apt-get upgrade is usually used to upgrade to sare or sid. This all depends what Knoppix had in it's sourcees.list file. Generally you can do update, but shouldn't do upgrade unless you wanted to change to sarge or sid. Apt-get upgrade may have brokern k3b or cdrecord, if it was already installed for woody. I'll have to look at my Knoppix apt source file to see what they have. Did you do the re-install of Debian already?
