LG LCD monitor Incompatible with Suse 9.1 text mode?
danleff replied to Idea's topic in Linux Hardware
I think that I know the problem. On install, you need to tell SuSe to install at 1024 X 768. There is a tab to F3 or something on the bottom of the initial install window to do this. In terms of you existing installation, if you have KDE up, then you need to go into the Control Panel and set up the new monitor. I will look at this later. I bet your monitor is not shown there, so you may need to have the correct settings from the users manual. It should be generic (vesa) LCD. Look at the manual and get the correct horizontal and vertical sync ranges. It should be something like; Horizontal = 30-83 Vertical = 56-75 You need to run it at probably; 1280 X 1024 @ 60 hz or; 1024 X 768 @ 75 hz But use your monitor specific ranges. You really need to do this to assure that the ranges are corect, or risk possible damage to the monitor. -
After re-reading your posts, we really need to know what exactly you have done. What are iso iso file names that you downloaded? You should have three; shrike-i386-disc1.iso shrike-i386-disc2.iso shrike-i386-disc3.iso Are these the exact names that you have downloaded and burned? If not, what are the names of the iso files? If they are; shrike-SRPMS-disc1.iso shrike-SRPMS-disc2.iso shrike-SRPMS-disc3.iso You got the wrong ones. If you got the right ones and burned them as images on a cdr disks at a slow speed in Nero (like 4X 0r 8X), have the bios set to boot from cd first, what happens when you try to boot the system from the 1st install cd? You have limited hard drive space, so will you be keeping Windows XP on the system and installing RedHat as a second OS, or just have RedHat on this system? Just a note, if XP is on this system, make sure that you defrag your XP partition befoe attempting an install. RedHat will use any existing free space on the XP partition to set up a parttition to install. If you dn't have XP on this system and will dedicate the full hard drive to the install, you don't have to worry about this, of course.

LG LCD monitor Incompatible with Suse 9.1 text mode?

Let me just clarify... You have an install of SuSe 9.1 and added a new monitor since the initial install? You are able to boot into SuSe and get your KDE screen right off, or do you get a text screen at boot? If this is the case, you need to change the monitor frequencies for the X windows system to match the new monitor, as X is using the old settings from the old monitor. When you boot into Windows, everything is still fine? -
I just installed Fedora Core 3. There is a delay in the system shutting down. How long do you wait for the system to start shutting down? Just for reference, is the install on a logical or primary partition? You mentioned both. Any other OS on the system?

Is this a desktop or laptop system? Is it an Asus motehrboard by any chance (or an HP system)? Do you just have a cdrw in the system, or a cdrom drive as well? Are you booting with the 1st cd in the cdrom (if you have one) or cdrw drive?
-
I'm getting into it right now. Did an install from the hard drive. Did you add a normal user per the wizard that pops up on first reboot? Is the error a /dev/dsp error? You may need to add your current user to the audio group. I'll take a look see.

Website design tools, gnutella client?
danleff replied to dapperdan & danleff rock!'s topic in Linux Software
Yes, it is designed by the Linspire folks (yes it is free) and works quite well. It seems good for beginners with WYSIWYG, but, as you would expect, you can use hand code as well. -
Ok, if you have gotten this far on a legacy board like this, then you are 1/2 way there. Sound working is a good sign, so the sis chipset stuff is fine. The processor probably runs a little slow, but it looks like your gui is up and running. How much memory is in the system? This will also affect performance. Is there anything that is not working, except the MP3 stick at this point? If not, then I egorgry can work with you on the player.

I just buned them myself. I'll let you know. I think what SoulNOTHING was referring to is an install next to Win XP, not on a second hard drive. There were issues with installs on the same hard drive right next to XP in Core 2 and some other distros using the 2.6 series kernel. Hopefully this has been resolved.

There are a number out there, many are included in newer Linux distros on one of the install cd's or pre-installed with the distro. It also depends on how complex a program that you want to run. One that helps to write the code for you? One that is easy to use, or allows you to have more imput in the design process? I use a number, including Bluefish, Quanta Plus and Nvu. So, what distro are you running? Are you using Gnome or KDE as your desktop environment? -
Linux uses it's own drivers, usually supplied in the flavor (distro) of Linux that you are using. If you provide us with some idea of what hardware is in your system (if you built it yourself), we can guide you better. Or, what make and model system do you have? Additional drivers may be needed for some hardware, but without knowing what you have, we can't advise easily. In the newer distros, drivers are not necessary in many cases. What will also help, is letting us know what version of Windows that you are running now. ...and what version and distro were you planning or thinking about running?

A tutorial on how to install RedHat is available on the RedHat site here. Before you proceed, perhaps you can answer some of the questions that were asked about your system and the iso that you burned. This will assure that this version is right for you and the hardware that you have, as well as the cdrom disks being burned correctly. ReHat 9 is fine, but an older version. Is there a reason why you chose RedHat 9 and not Fedora, which supports newer hardware? So, what hardware are you running? Or, what model/make of computer do you have? Did you get the iso images burned OK, as mentioned above? The installer runs on boot and the system's bios needs to be set to boot from cdrom first to get the installer going, just like Windows XP. How large of a hard drive do you have, so that space can be made on it to install a Linux distro? RedHat will need some hard drive space to install to. Again the link that I gave will some some basic information on this. Answers to the questions posed will help us guide you to a more easily accomplished install.

From the Mandrake documentation page, look at the Rpmdrake: Package Management This should get you started.

...amd make sure that you burned the image, not the file itself as a data file. If changing the bios to boot from cdrom first does not work; Look at the cd in another distro or windows and see if you see just the iso as a single file, or a list of directories and files. The iso files need to be burned as image. If you just see a single iso file, from Nero, go to file-->burn image. Choose the location of the iso and burn them at 4X speed.

Yes, and if you like it and want to play with it for a while (if it works on your lappy) the you can do a hard drive install and see how it responds on the drive.

Fast answer, the system will not boot from a SEMPRON processor without a bios update first. The Asus site doesn't support links easily, but if you go to the support page and follow the links to this board's cpu support, it clearly states; Quote: System will not boot with this processor before updaing to version 1012. Referring to the Sempron 2200+ (Model 8) or Sempron 2200+ (Model 10). So, unless you are sure that you are getting a board with the bios updated, you will need an older processor to flash the bios for support for this processor. It should be rock solid with the XP processor and Linux. I have the Soyo counterpart and it is great!

Dell Optiplex? What speed processor is in it and how much memory? Is this a GXA, GX1...?
-
Yep, this is a lighted drive and I must say a nice one! I bet power is an issue. Is this a dual usb connection on the external drive (requires 2 usb connections to the pc or lappy), or just one? Also is the ac adapter plugged in when you use the drive?

Radeon X800 XT PE with Fedora Core 2 x86-64
danleff replied to LordVagabond's topic in Linux Hardware
Just to check, you do have either a AMD64 processors (Athlon64 or Opteron) or Intel processors with Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel® EM64T) and at least 128 mb of ram in the system? -
Not durng the install, you are correct.
-
Could you be more specific? What distro and version of Linux are you using and what exact problem are you having? Installation issues...problems with the X system?

When you click on the logout button, do you get the popup screen with the choices to end the session, turn off the computer or restart the computer? If so, have you checked one of the boxes and hit OK? The mouse is is little sensitive in FC2, if the above is not applicable, does the screen freeze or revert back to the desktop when you make a choice?
-
I should have been more clear. When I installed FC2, it asks where to install Grub/lilo. At this screen, you can pick where it should go. Since I already have grub from another distro, I choose a floppy. This way I can test the install and if it works well, I add FC2 to my grub list. Most folks, or course, choose to install to the MBR, which is expected. But when they get grub or boot errors, recovery is a pain, as this user is finding out. The other issue, or course, is the ntfs problem. Once Grub is installed and fails, due to the geometry issue, well you know!
-
I looked at the users manual for this system. Most likely it is a pctel softmodem, which is designed to work in Windows. The documentation is not very specific. I agree with Dan. You may want to invest in a modem such as he recommended. Some have gotten thiese to work in Linux, but you have to compile a driver for it, or at the very least, recompile the kernel. The time you save getting a modem that will work correctly (not a softmodem or winmodem) will be worth the cost.

I have the same video card in my secondary system, which has no trouble at all with Linux. You noted that you did a text install. Is this because the video card failed on a graphical install? How much memory is in this system? The other issue could be monitor settings. What monitor do you have? Give us some system specs. so we can help troubleshoot the issue, if Dan's solutions do not help.
