I just installed Mandrake 10 on my secondary hard drive on a Soyo Dragon Platinum motherboard. Problem #1 - Highpoint raid After several fails on install (mkinitrd failed when installing the bootloader) I then fell on the issue with highpoint raid drivers on install. The suggestion was to disable the modules and use the rescue mode to re-install them when the system was up and running. However, the rescue mode fails at this, as it uses a different kernel version in rescue mode!. So, I disable raid in the bios and the install completes. No resolution to the problem yet. Problem #2 - ide-scsi K3b requires ide-scsi to be added to the grub file to properly use cdrdao. Resolution - add ide-scsi to the grub file. Problem #3 - No internet connection or sound! Eth0 fails on boot, due to a fluke with the onboard via-rhine NIC. A search of google reveals that this is an issue with the onboard via-rhine NIC. Resolution - add noapic acpi=off to the grub menu. Problem #4 - No scroll mouse Mandrake failed to configure my scroll mouse, I thought that I set it correctly during the install? Not according to the XF86Config-4 file! Resolution - reconfigure the scroll mouse with Mandrake´s hardware tools. So, the latest and the greatest comes with a price. Previous versions of Mandrake installed without a hitch, including 9.2, Bata 1 and Mandrake 12312003 cooker. As we all encounter troubles with our installs, remember, consider choosing the stable releases and don´t assume the newest is the best for your hardware!

First, I think you meant to say that you are not a "newbie." Do a search on this forum for your specific modem. You should be able to find a driver reference. What modem is it? If it is a lucent modem, for example; See here. Then follow the link to to here

Wich drive is Mandrake installed on? You mentioned a third hard drive - 60 gig. Is this attached to a raid connector (the third ide connector on the board)? If so, is it being used as an ide drive or true raid device? If you want to experiment, disconnect the third drive (if it is on the 3rd ide connector on the motherboard) and see if Knoppix or any other distro boots. Or, in the bios, disable raid detection then see if Knoppix or Mandrake boots. Assuming, or course that Mandrake is installed on hard drive 1 or 2.

this is a well knwon problem with Fedora 2 installs on the same disk as Windows XP. See the thread here and note the referenced links that I gave.

What is Dapper Dan talking about? 8) Good question. You got me thinking about this also. I'll look this up and see. Can you get into the kernel and see if any drivers are there for networking, like 10/100 options and such?
-
Did you check the iso files to see if they had the correct md5sum? This would be the first thing to check. Possibly a bad burn also. Did you do the media check before starting the install? Did you use cdrw's or cdr media? It is not unusual, especially older cdrom drives, choke with cdrw's You also need to keep in mind that you need to burn the iso's at a very slow speed. Iso files like to be burned at 4X or 8X speed at the most.

Post a link or reference to the site where you got the rpm. There are a couple of them out there. This way we can look at the readme or faq and see what they say about installing the rpm. Also, are you trying to install the package as root user?
-
A few issues. The speed of the processor and the amount of memory needed are important. Compiling apps. requires resources. How much memory is there in the amd system? Compare this to the intel based system that you tried. Take a look here. Also, did you elect to install any development packages in the amd install, or reduce the amount of packages to include during the install, due to limited hard disk space?

Try booting with the install cd add the following option to the boot command line: pci=off ide1=0x180,0x386 Reference: http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/fedora/linux/core/2/i386/os/RELEASE-NOTES-en.html

How to uninstall Linux Mandrake 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
danleff replied to vipzzz's topic in Everything Linux
Yes, the preferred method of restoring the MBR in Win XP is to use the fixboot method in the recovery console of the WinXP install cd. Using fdisk /mbr may or may not work. I have seen both senarios. Hopefully vipzzz has the XP install disk (XP is not pre-installed and he does not have the original disk). -
How to uninstall Linux Mandrake 10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
danleff replied to vipzzz's topic in Everything Linux
One problem here. Windows fdisk will not see the Mandrake partiton, will it? Either use PartitionMagic to delete your partition and resize the windows partition; or you can use the Mandrake install disk #1 to start the install process until you get to the disk partioning utility. Choose expert partitioning and allow Mandrake to delete the Mandrake partition. You will get an error message about no root partition for Mandrake, Ignore this and then back out of the install. You can then use a partitoning utility like fdisk or whatever to make another vfat partition, or whatever you want to do. If you want to just make another logical parition with the free space, that's fine too. -
If you are referring to the boot.ini file for XP, it can be done, but as Dan said, it's much easier using grub. As Dan also said, if you are looking to modify a 3rd party boot manager, such as Boot Magic, expect some issues.

Found another interesting link here. So, if you expect to use the system as Linux only, there should not be a problem. However, as most people do, you already have raid set up in Windows, I would expect some issues. Remember, sata=hardware raid= generally software. So, if you have 2 drives in a raid array, this is the issue. If you are using just one sata drive alone and want to format it for Mandrake, it should work. However, I would opt for the plain ide drive for Linux as well, until full compatability is achieved.

Depending on what distro that you are using, you need to install the x-11 development or x-org development package.

When you install PartitionMagic you get two documentation files that come with the installed software. Once the software is installed, go to Start--> All Programs (in XP)-->Powerquest Partition Magic 8-->PartitionMagic 8 Documentation. Theree are two Adobe files that will help you through the process, a quick start quide and users manual.

If it is Photoshop 5.5, yes. Unforunately, my favorite Wine site, Frank's Corner is down right now. Hopefully he will be up and running soon. The site message states that the account has been suspended. It is an excellent resource. I hope it comes back up soon. For reference; Frank's Corner links.

You are of course using root console?

Did you follow the instructions on the Yoper forums on installing the 2.6 kernel located here?

See, I told you so! But double0three gets it. You pay for the ease of using CNR warehouse! Linspire has had promos where you can get the cd free (the download) but you only pay for the service to use CNR. You can access the forums for support as a "guest." Again, Mandrake, RedHat and some of the other major distros like Xandros all have "options" to pay...for the support and as a member!

Blackpage posted the link to the official Fedora page and it's fix LOCATED HERE in another thread.

I quess you don't keep track of the news much! Lindows is now called Linspire, as Microsoft sued claiming a copyright issue with the name Windows. Linspire is it's own distro based on Debian. Linux addicts don't like to talk about it much as Linspire costs some cash. I have Linspire on my system and it runs very well. It is geared toward the user who wants a distro that installs easily and requires little effort to install additional packages (programs). You can directly install new software using the CNR warehouse, without bothering with dependencies and such. However, all the new distros have gotten much better at this, although us die-hard users enjoy tinkering with installing packages the hard way (or as we might say, the right way)! We could start a nice flame war here about it, but we will avoid that! It is another good choice, depending on the level of experience of the Linux user.

Correct. He should not have a problem with Mandrake 9. It has been reporetd that the problem does lie in the kernel as noted here. To quote the article; Quote: The reports of other users suggest that if new partitions are created during FC2 installation, then Disk Druid will create a new partition table using the geometry 38760,16,63 because Disk Druid uses parted. In this case, Windows will not boot. If new partitions are not created during FC2 installation, that is, the current partition table is used, then Disk Druid will not create a new partition table. In this case, Windows will boot. What is needed is a method of overriding the disk geometry that the 2.6 kernel is using during installation and thereafter. This can be done by using a kernel parameter.

I agree with Dapper Dan. If you choose Mandrake 9, no problems with the partitioning. If you go with Mandrake 10, then use PartitionMagic to downsize your NTFS partition, then make an ext3 partition at the end for Mandrake 10. When you install 10, just point it to the ext3 partition that you reserved for it. Make sure before you do anything, that you defrag the NTFS partition in Windows first. This avoids any possibility of files being stuck at the end of the drive/partition being caught in the changes of the partitions. With Mandrake 9, you avoid the kernel 2.6 problem with altering the NTFS partition, so that Windows becomes unbootable. If you use Mandrake 10, make the partitions first, as noted above (with PartitionMagic), BEFORE the installation. This avoids any conflicts with PartitionMagic later on if you decide to add another distro or change your partitioning scheme. The only reason that you may choose to use Mandrake 10, is if you have realy new hardware, such as SATA drives or a really wiz bang new video card.

Problems installing linux on IBM IntelliStation M Pro (PLZ help)
danleff replied to skunkythemonkey's topic in Everything Linux
Sounds like a video/hardware issue to me. I get conflicting hardware specs. about this system. Does this system have nForce onboard, including oboard graphics? My initial guess is that you are using distro versions that do not have support for the newer hardware that you have.
