I have a problem with the onboard Soundstorm. I have the Logitech Z-640 5.1 speakers. I am pretty sure i have them hooked up correctly. Green(front) plug to line-in, orange(center) to center channel input, and black(rear) to the purple rear input. That said, when i select Dolby Surround Encoding in the SoundStream options the back speakers cut out, the center channel comes through though. But when i turn it off the rear speakers come on but the center channel cuts out. I have to push Matrix3D to get center. It seems I shouldn't need to do this but is there anyone out there that knows more about this than I do? Help is appreciated. -gilgamesh

Hi, I have Windows 2000 and had applied a theme to it to make it look different. However, I decided to switch back to standard Windows 2000 look but I need two files that i forgot to backup before replacing with the custom images. The two files are: wvlogo.gif and wvleft.bmp. They are located in the WINNT/Web folder and total 48 KB in size. If someone that has Windows 2000 that could send me these two files, I would be very grateful. Thanks. My e-mail is lutikri55@hotmail.com. -gilgamesh

I would have to agree with Alec. I too am currently an Nvidia user but if I was going to buy a card anytime soon, it would definitely be an ATI. ATI has proven itself to be much better than I previously had seen it. ATI has quality products, so go for the ATI.

First off, Unreal Tournament 2 is Unreal Tournament 2003. I assume you mean Unreal 2 by Unreal Tournament 2. Unreal 2 is just not worth the money. It's short, and there is no replayability. Play it once all the way through and that's all there is, no multiplayer. I would wait for it to go into bargain bins when you will be able to get it for 5-10 bucks. It's really only worth about that. If you want replayability and a game that will keep you playing for a long time, go for Unreal Tournament 2003. Thats all I have to say about it.

Actually, as surprising at it may seem I get better gaming performance on 2000 rather than XP. I get about 150 points more 3DMark 2001 score and almost 50 more in the 3DMark03 score. So I have switched back to 2000 as a result.

I just tried the NVidia 43.45 2k/XP Drivers: VERDICT inside!
gilgamesh replied to CyberGenX's topic in Hardware
Quote: * So Bottom Line? Well, I guess I'd say: HAVE AT THEM! I second that, they work great. The other in between drivers like the 42.xx always gave me graphical glitches with RTCW but these are solid and stable. -
XP Pro is better, end of story.

It looks like the geforce4 440 go is less powerful than the ATI Radeon 9000 mobility. However they seem to be pretty close. Read this: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1692&p=1 . So I would assume that the 7500 is less powerful than the Geforce4 440 Go. Basically the 7500 is the worst of the bunch. I would go with the 9000 in terms of lifetime that you will get out of it. The 7500 Radeon is already outdated in terms of gaming.

Well the Radeon 9000 is going to be better than the 7500...

Sony trying to screw people out of rebates
gilgamesh replied to ThC 129's topic in Everything New Technology
THC, Sony did the same exact thing to me on a rebate for a CD-RW. I bought the dang thing cause I was getting a rebate. However, I mailed it in soon after purchase and they said that the date for rebate had passed even though on the rebate ticket it said clearly that it hadn't. It really annoyed me and I called them several times but never got anywhere with them. I finally said screw it. Last time i ever buy a Sony CD-RW. It's chewed a few of my cd's along the way as well (scratching them to heck). I am ready to ditch the thing. Sony CD-RW's suck. -
I have a problem. My problem is that my computer sporadically not turn on. What I mean by not turn on is it does nothing, no power supply fan or anything. Other times it comes on fine without a hitch. When it is the case that it seems dead, i unplug the cord from the wall and plug it back in to see if that works. If that doesn't work I unplug the power cable from the case and then plug it back in. By this time it usually comes on with the next press of the power button. When i finally get it on, it runs fine for the duration of it being on which can be as long as a week. I have determined it isnt a faulty power cord becuase I have switched it and it still does that same thing. I have checked all things inside the case as well. Could this stem from a faulty power supply with a short in it or something? Thanks for any help. -gilgamesh

Thanks for the information, I have a 350 W PSU, but it is a cheapy brand, I bought it plus the case for 25 bucks new. No wonder it is screwing up on me. I think i might invest in an Antec case and PS. I will give that PSu test a spin to see what happens. Thanks agin for the information.

adamvjackson, Age of Empires 2 is soo much better than CnC: Generals. Generals is the same RTS theyve been pushing since the original CnC. Westwood has no clue how to innovate gameplay. They simply upgrade the graphics and think its a new game. AOE2, now thats an RTS.

Ok thanks for the info.

I currently have only Windows XP installed on my system. However, I recently found an old 2 GB hard drive and put it in my computer. I would like to put Windows 98 SE on this second drive. I tried formatting the second drive to FAT32, then copying all the setup files from the WIn98 cd to the same drive. I then used a boot disk to get to that drive in DOS. I started the Windows 98 setup but recieved an error after the initial welcome to Win98 setup screen. Do I have to install Windows 98 first? Because I really do not want to have to reinstall Windows XP. Any ideas on how I could do this without completely reinstalling? Also has anyone ever used the Romtec Trios Hard Drive selector? Is it worth the money?

Windows XP / 98SE dual boot..need help
gilgamesh replied to gilgamesh's topic in Everything New Technology
Thanks killersheep i may try that. From what I've seen, the Trios drive selector will do the same thing for you without having to open the case, so I may give that a try but maybe not, i dont really want to spend 50 bucks on it. I wont be using Win98 a whole lot, just when i play old dos games and such, so good idea, thanks again -gilgamesh -
This is because windows 2000 does not emulate VESA in a dos box. My suggestion would be to buy the Battle.net edition of Warcraft II which is a native Windows application and runs fine under windows 2000. It is typically $9.99 US but I have seen it as low as $1.99 US.
