I currently have a Geforce3 original. Would upgrading to a 9700 pro be worth it? Or would it be better to wait for the next gen radeon 9800? Thanks in advance for any input.

This is really starting to annoy me. I can play Warcraft III fine for about 15 - 20 minutes but then it randomly crashes and give me an exception in war3.exe. I have tried using the -swtnl switch as well as the -opengl switch, but neither have fixed the problem. I have found other places on the net with people talking about this problem, but none of them have a definitive fix for this. It seems to run fine in 2K, but I would rather just use XP.

Thanks for the information guys. I will try the 30.82 official Nvidia Drivers and see if I get crashes. If this fixes I will post confirmation. Thanks again.

What are your guys opinions on XP vs 2000? I have used XP Pro for a couple months now. At first I was impressed, but I find myself wanting to go back to Windows 2000 Pro, where there is not as much overhead, like with the skinned GUI and other background services. Do you guys think this is a good idea? I do play lots of games, but XP doesn't seem to have a huge advantage in performance over 2000. Well anyway, thanks for the input.

Winamp 2.81 is definitely the best Mp3 player out there. Winamp3 would continue to play cds and mp3's after I closed the program, which is not something I liked very much . Windows Media Player I use hardly ever.

Yep I have all the upgrades. I dont get any errors on any other games so it shouldn't be the memory should it?
-
I have found out that I get the error on both Windows XP and Windows 2000. The error is the same on both versions of Windows using the same computer. I am using a real copy of Warcraft III that I purchased. This is the error message: FATAL ERROR! Program: C:\Games\Warcraft III\war3.exe Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 001B:15020970 The instruction at '0x15020970' referenced memory at '0xBF212121'. The memory could not be 'read'. Does anyone know what this might mean? Thanks, Gil

If I remember correctly, didn't Riven cd-rom version use Quicktime 2.x? Does the DVD not use this version? Also, for me, with games like MYST and Riven, using the Quicktime version included with the game is always best, becuase newer versions are sometimes incompatible with older games that utilize quicktime. My two cents worth....

Cool thanks for the responses! -
Webstripper will do the job, http://www.webstripper.net/ . Good luck!

This was supposed to be a response to Doom 3 Patch but somehow it screwed up.... Yea i think the mods are what might make the game somewhat good. After I got over the general effect of the creepy atmosphere of the demo (which took like a whole 5 minutes), I was thoroughly bored. It is just another typical ID style game, not much for any breakthoughs in gameplay. Just another corridor shooter with pretty graphics.
-
Well then maybe they should call their company "ID 3D Engine Design and Licensing, Inc." That would be more fitting.
-
It's sad that since Quake I every Id game has been a sequel of some sort. It might be a good time to think about game design ID. ;(

Hehe, it's not for everybody, I play the original Jedi Knight more than JK2 anyway.

and don't forget Jedi Knight II.

Amen, DosFreak! Someone who sees Doom III for what it really could and most likely will be. Doom III will be essentially the 5th doom game. I mean Quake, Quake 2, and Quake 3 are basically the same, but with new engines. You could have just as easily called them Doom 3, Doom 4, and Doom 4.5, making this new installment Doom 5. If you ask me ID's games just got boring after the original Doom series. Here's a good editorial by gamespy: http://www.gamespy.com/legacy/editorials/doom3_a.shtm

Never did I say the engine had no potential. I said the gameplay could possibly be mediocre at best. As for the engine itself, it's breath-taking. The amount of detail in the game is awe-spiring. When someone makes a Jedi Knight II or Half-Life (figuratively of course) with that engine, it will be amazing.

Wow get all defensive will ya All I was saying that as of now Doom III has little in the way of new gameplay. If they do indeed implement more involved and complicated gameplay, it will most likely be a decent game. However, looking at ID's past releases, Doom III will likely not contain any significant new gameplay elements, only graphics.

I just had a quick question. Does 32-bit desktop color depth have any adverse affects on performance or does it make no difference? I was just curious

I have also tried it on a friends computer with WindowsXP SP1 and it works fine if you use the compatibility mode. (Windows 98, Turn of Visual Themes).

I have the same problem. I bought System Shock 2 recently only to be dismayed that I couldn't play it. I was able to use lgntforce to install but when I go to play the game all I get is some hd activity and an hourglass cursor. Then it goes back to the normal cursor and nothing happens. How do you use QFixApp in Windows 2000? Specs: AthlonXP 2000+ 512ram geforce3 (original) 30.82 drivers windows 2000 SP3 Soundblaster Live! Thanks!
