do this: open your shell and type: gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command -t string 'firefox %s' and gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/https/command -t string 'firefox %s' This will set firefox as default browser for evolution (in a non Gnome DE). Im using another linux so please be sure to check what your firefox link is. Of course you can use this link to any browser you wish.

Use Alsa http://www.alsa-project.org Alsa has the ability to run multiple soundcards. As you use Red Hat i would suggest you get the rpm's from http://www.freshrpms.net otherwise install it from the source. If you dont need two soundcards turn nvidia off in the BIOS. Good luck

Would typing (as root): Code: /sbin/init 3 do the same?

You can also download drivers from the nVidia site. You will get a *.bin file. You will also need kernel source. Tip: read the nvidia FAQ Good luck

If you ask me I would go for Red Hat if you are a novice (great doc's out there written for red hat). Otherwise Debian (admin's dream with apt-get package manager). I'm using Gentoo as a desktop OS. I guess it would be great for server purposes. The OS is like Linux From Scratch meets FreeBSD ports OS. If you have the time (compiling of the base system and packages is going to take you 5/6 hours) and you want to learn more go for Gentoo. Otherwise (if it doesnt matter) go for freeBSD (btw this is not not linux ). Good luck

Make dir where you want to mount your partioton, for example /win/c ( command: mkdir /win/c ) Then: Use the command: /dev/hda1 /win/c ntfs ro,noauto,user,umask=022 0 0 If you want to mount on boot, put that line in /etc/fstab (without noauto). Please dont WRITE on your ntfs 'cause you could screw up your partion!! (for writing you better use FAT32). Good luck

I have a silly question: Is it smart to use both Wine and Winex on your linux? I dont want to play games on my Linux box, but i heard some windoze apps run better with winex. Guys with wine and winex installed do you have some suggetsions and/or tips for me ?
-
I will try that palos tnx. I'm playing with wine at the moment. A mirc script on my windows partition doesnt work that well (a new mirc installation works better). I dont now, i have mixed feelings about RH8. I have a real strange feeling about stability (did some kill -9's). I guess its just me :-)

Well I guess my fonts dont work that good. I have copied verdana* form c:\winnt\Fonts to /usr/share/fonts and i did the fc-cache /usr/share/fonts thing, but i cannot change to verdana in mozilla nor in xchat. Only place i can find verdana font is in preferrence -> fonts. Is there some other way (like mkfontdir command --> RH7.*) to change to verdana in xchat and other apps? ;( Thanks. Oh, btw, that mozilla thing makes my fonts look very small (i guess it has to do with my resolution which is 1280x1024).

Well for me, a real Windows killer would be MacOSX, but i dont have the money for a new Mac box. I use windows for games, and Macormedia/Adobe things. Linux (redhat for anything else) freeBSd as a server (apache, mysql and mailserver). Good thing there is so much choice :-) btw, i dunno whos site this is, i just want to compliment him/(her?) on it.

To be honest, why do you want a Windows killer? It's just an OS. If you like Windows continue and use it Use everything you like. Thank God we have so much choice. I have RH 8 on my pc, I like it, but i still use Windows for some other stuff.

RH 8.0 Hangs when selecting hdisk during installation!
Zuti replied to jerryzeng's topic in Everything Linux
Had the same problem. Boot your RH installation in text mode (type 'text'). It should work fine. Good luck
