CUPS - What does it stand for?

Can't Usually Print Stuff As you may guess I am having problems. I've got an Epson C40UX (yes it's cheap but I ain't got much money to spare on computer stuff). Linuxprinting.org tells me that it prints 'Perfectly'. I downloaded and installed the latest CUPS and Ghostscript (as recommended) and compiled them and installed them as per instructions. After some head scratching (and searching the .net) I finally figured out how to switch the damn thing on. BUT administering it through a browser keeps throwing up bizarre errors such as 'Error : client-error-gone' or 'client-error-forbidden'. The documentation does not seem to be very helpful in this respect (unless I've missed something). Below is a brief extract of the error log : D [19/Oct/2002:00:02:42 +0100] [Job 26] Current allocation mode is local D [19/Oct/2002:00:02:42 +0100] [Job 26] Last OS error: 2 D [19/Oct/2002:00:02:42 +0100] [Job 26] ESP Ghostscript 7.05.5: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1 E [19/Oct/2002:00:02:42 +0100] PID 10396 stopped with status 1! Any help you guys could give me would be appreciated. This printing issue on Linux is beginning to bite. Windoze may be the most evil thing on the planet but at least it doesn't take 12 bloody hours (spread over three days) to try and print a ******** test page!!! (And fail.) Paul.

CUPS - What does it stand for?

I'm configuring using the web interface with Mozilla in Gnome (don't personally like KDE but as a relative newbie I don't want to get involved in any wars here ). The biggest problem is that I get a lot of error messages such as "error-client-gone" or "client-error-not-authorized". This is especially frustrating as the system can obviously SEE the printer with no problem. Anyway, I HAVE got the thing to work SORT OF. I ditched ESPGS and downloaded Gimp Print (which I should've done in the first place) . Initially I thought it had worked with no problem, however, since I had a printer already configured using the CUPS drivers I tried to delete it. Big mistake. First I got a "client-error-not-authorised" but the printer WAS deleted. Then the gimp-print printer wouldn't print anything "could not open usb://epsonC40 etc etc : device not found". In the end I had to manually edit printers.conf (not what I really wanted to do) to remove the listed printers and start from scratch. Then I kept getting "client-error-not-authorised" every time I tried to add my printer again. After a lot of swearing, head scratching and general puzzlement I discovered that if I set up a printer using the command line and then used the web interface to configure the printer using the Gimp Print drivers it works perfectly. Anyway, the bloody thing works and I'm not touching it again it case it stops.... Paul.

Watching DVDs in Mandrake Linux 9.0

Cheers for those links . I've tried Ogle but had enormous problems with my set-up (RH7.2) trying to get ANY sound out of the thing. Maybe I'll try again when I have time! Thanks again! Paul.

    Bit of problem with RH7.2....

Hi, I'm pretty new here so excuse me if this is in the wrong area. I'm running RH7.2(Enigma I think) with the default Gnome setup. While fiddling with the fonts and things I suddenly noticed that the CD player won't work any more. When I try to run it or insert an audio CD I get the message "Can't load fixed width font - exiting." Does anyone know what the problem might be? If I log on as 'root' then it works fine. Cheers, Paul.

    Bit of problem with RH7.2....

A bit more info. If I try and run gtcd from a terminal window this is the output I get : Gdk-WARNING **: Missing charsets in FontSet creation Gdk-WARNING **: ISO8859-1 Gdk-WARNING **: ISO8859-1 I've been through all the permissions for the fonts I've added and they are OK. Any other thoughts? Cheers Paul

    Why are you running Linux?

Of course M$ is evil. Why else would I have to scour the .net for weeks trying to find if anyone had written a driver for this cheap carp modem that depends on Windoze for its operation? Whatever happened to building a proper modem? Why do PC makers insist on cutting corners?? A thousand quid on a brand new PC and they couldn't even be BOTHERED to give me a proper freakin' modem??!!!***!!! BTW I found a driver in the end. Paul.

    Bit of problem with RH7.2....

Hmmm. The permissions are set correctly so I can only assume I've selected a font somewhere along the line that cdplayer doesn't like at all. Rats.

    Bit of problem with RH7.2....

I never thought of that! I've been fiddling with fonts to try and de-uglify them (added some truetype fonts etc). I'll let you know if it works. Cheers, Paul.
