Another way to look at this is that most of the described hardware listed above is out of warranty .... why test server software on hardware that is no longer supported by the manufacturers. Granted its use was for test machines, but MS is into the creation of software for production equipment, not test environments. My 2 cents ....

Adding users from a .xls file or from a .txt in Win2K3...
DS3Circuit replied to dcxman's topic in Software
Any reason CSVDE and LDIFDE no longer work? I believe they are part of the 2003 support tools. Again, I have not had time to play with this feature. http://www.serverwatch.com/tutorials/article.php/1470981 -
Contact HP support at this point ..... or if you are truly creative, modify the installshield installer with installshied developer to redirect what registry keys/files it is searching for. Maybe easier to blast them an email?

Did you check your hardware on HCL? Did you check the downloaded ISO for crc checksums consistencies? http://members.home.nl/lsnoek/iso.htm#Verifying%20.ISO%20files%20and%20CDs

Increasing number of network connections in Windows 2k
DS3Circuit replied to ashirley's topic in Networking
Maximum numbers of connections for WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL is that the 10 session limit is related to SMB or File Share connections. There cannot be more than 10 concurrent connections to shares on a Win2k Professional machine. That can be 10 users that have one share open each, or one user that has 10 shares open! If you have problems with users keeping too many shares open, you can configure the timeout period for connections to be shorter. The default period is 15 minutes. This can be done in the registry or via Group Policy. The RAS issue is a little tricky, but it does make sense. You can have a single *inbound* RAS connection via *each* RAS interface. Therefore, you can have one user RAS in via a VPN connection, one user RAS in via a dial-up connection, and another user RAS in via the direct serial connection. There is still a limited on the number of users *per connection* to one, so a second person could not use a VPN connection to access the Win2k Pro machine. Note that in this example, if some were to RAS in via dial-up and another person RAS in via VPN, you would need two modems connected to that computer: one for the direct dial-up user and the second to be connected to the Internet to accept the VPN connection. The RAS users also count toward the number of SMB connections that would be made to shares. But as long as there are 10 or fewer active SMB connections, the users will still be able to access a share. NOTE: even though there may be 10 active connections to SMB resources, the RAS users will still be able to authenticate and join the network. They just won't be able to access anything. Windows 2000 Server allows an "unlimited" amount of connections .... based upon hardware, CALs, VPN connections are limited to 255 I believe. Here's an article for ya http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q179483&ID=KB;EN-US;Q179483& And as to my knowledge there is no way to get around this limitation. HTH [/b] -
Adding users from a .xls file or from a .txt in Win2K3...

www.cdolive.net is a great resource. http://www.cdolive.net/download/BulkAddFromExcel.zip Enjoy, I have been using this for years. EDIT Sorry didnt see the 2003 domain .... If you are not running in native 2003 mode, then I image this will still work, sorry havent had time to test this on 2003 yet. -
For those of you who have experience in this migration I would love to hear any personal experiences, important links, and horror stories. My employer has placed me at the head of migrating a base of 100 users to 10.2 (its a support issue) Beyond the testing of all the software and moving personal data and preferences, I would also like to: 1. Automate the process somehow ... apple script perhaps? 2. Have the users log into a native windows 2000 (now) 2003 (later) domain context. Any thoughts, responses, questions, and links would be appreciated. I am beginning to see that the 95 to 2000 migration of 2 years ago, was far easier.

This has become a political thing ..... it appears that the users themselves will be the hardest part of this upgrade. For loging into the domain, I plan on using MacAdmin. For the odd-ball printers I plan on using http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net Thank you for thoughts and opinions, its always nice to hear from someone else who has been on the "road less traveled."

Congratulations on the new job APK !! I hope the environment and benefits are as great as you say they are. Apologies for not being around much as of late .... Blackberry Server and RIMs been driving me nuts .... I myself enjoyed the whole "live it" part as well ... I have been living this IT life to the point where a walk in closet has become a test server room in my house LOL ...... perhaps living it too much?

Besides tweaks like MTU ... you can decrease the strength of the security by thereby using less CPU to decrypt/encrypt frames or purchase NIC that do DES and 3DES on the card (intel) Generally, the speed of the VPN correlates to the size of your pipe. What is the typically bandwidth for your cable connection, and is there a difference between loading this DOS application and copying data back n forth.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/dumpel-o.asp An example syntax for dumping the security log: dumpel -f file_to_dump.txt -s \\server -l security You can schedule this task using Task Scheduler and pipe it out to the printer using a batch file. HTH

Here is a registry entry to have your machine BSOD whenever you so choose http://windows.about.com/library/tips/bltip056.htm

Depends on what version of windows you are running and if you have upgraded from the base installation. www.microsoft.com/directx for the latest version Start / Run / DXDIAG to see what version you are currently running. IIRC, the differences between the direct x 7 versions was the handling of USB controllers .....

Jack of all trades and master of ONE, I believe would be the best way to put it. I believe what your future employers are seeking is a person who can be a concrete foundation to a particular part of their IT division and yet be a supporting role to others. For example, my primary function at this job is Active Directory Administration though I rarely see that duty much anymore. Tasks such as migration of end users, macintoshes, WLAN integration come across my desk more. To relate this to you, if you emphasize in Visual Basic and yet have enough of an understanding of C, Pascal, ASP, etc your employer will assign those duties onto you. Nobody wants just someone who can handle one task and be completely oblivious to all other aspects of IT. Onto the other parts that seem to concern you .... certifications need to be backed up, so I hope you have lots of experience with SQL and RDMS for your MCDBA. Again, I stress internships (experience is key) .... future employers love to see you are a team player and can contribute to group projects. Another thing .... getting your Masters may help you in the long run. I would talk to your career planning department in your college before you get to "bent outta shape" I'm sure others will want to throw in more ideas and opinions. I realize there are many variables in this equation so if you disagree with anything that I have stated, feel free to comment.

What is the proper way to install nvidia video drivers?
DS3Circuit replied to RedStar's topic in Hardware
Under Windows 2000, I would personally use the Add/Remove Hardware applet in the control panel to uninstall drivers ..... but since you brought up its a geforce card a utility call the Nvidia File Remover has been tossed about. You can google it for a better understanding ..... author's web site is here http://rudz.frac.dk/ HTH -
Any reason you dont wish to pursue MCSD ? .... its the coding professional MS certification. I would also recommend getting an internship ... experience looks good on any resume

Agreed felix. First thing that comes to mind is .... is video hardware acceleration enabled ... dxdiag will tell you this.

Sounds good to me .... sorry about the double post above

Well you got a PCI card that provides connections for up to 15 wide UltraSCSI devices and transfers data at up to 40 MBytes/sec. I believe it supports SE and HVD devices. Wide means it supports the 68 pin standard. So the hard drive you are looking for is part of the SCSI 3 generation or older and the termination on that would be 110 active ohms. The cable you describe would provide the necessary termination. Probably a little too much information, but as long as you purchase the correct drive, you should be alright HTH
