Quote: Is there a way to write a script that we can restrict user access? Check the resource kits from scriptable tools such as http://www.ss64.com/nt/cacls.html http://www.ss64.com/nt/xcalcs.html In regards to your setup of multiple NT domains .... I personally would have recommended and encouraged a setup were there is an empty root domain where the rest of domains are children to the one empty ... with "enterprise" domain admins being heavily audited. Why the two way trusts? Do children domains need to have access to the IT support domain? If so, were shortcut trusts not an option? Quite honestly, I havent seen a scenario where Quote: one master login name & password wasused throughout an entire forest for management as the one you have described .... perhaps its just me ...

Glad to hear ... any particular reason you have not migrated to Windows 2000? ADMT is rather concise and highly capable to move a large base of users. -

Localization (language) files for a specific language which correspond to the number assigned to these folders. These folders remain empty unless Windows XP Professional is localized for this particular language. An example of this would be Office 2000 and XP in USA use 1033 as their default. I believe it would ok to delete them, yet I see no need as they are not occupying space. -

Quote: If I partitioned and formatted the virgin drive to NTFS, could I take that FAT32 version (for lack of a better term) image and just restore it to the new drive without the command line stuff that I don't like to do in the frist palce? Yes What backup program you using, outta curiosity?
-
Just adding on Quote: 1. Just how to do this considering that the old drive is FAT32 and I want to image that to the new active partition. I can't just take that image and copy it the the NTFS drive could I? convert would be the "dos" command Quote: Since the backup programs are FAT32 would it be best to burn these to a CD and then transfer back to the 2nd partition? No Need Quote: There would be a problem with the other drive being FAT32 as far as transfering between the 2 drives or reading from each other, correct? Copying data from the NTFS to the FAT32 drive would lose all inherent permissions, copying data from the FAT32 drive to the NTFS drive would inherit all permissions. Quote: 4. My 2nd box is FAT32 also, would that be the same problem transfering between the 2 boxes? The rules above apply to this as well.

Quote: the teachers share a lot of teaching material on a server using file and print sharing, so I am not sure if restricting the netbios ports would also disable file and print sharing. As an addition, disabling/removing file and printer sharing from client workstation will not hinder their ability to retrieve files from a Print/File Server.

Quote: We disabled messenger service in our school so pranksters won't use them to disrupt computer classes. However, I found out a couple of machines yesterday which were able to use the net send command to message a teacher's pc. Those pc's messenger services were disabled (checked using mmc and net start), and nbtstat didn't show anything registered at [03]. netsvc \\machinename start messenger net send Blah Blah netsvc \\machinename stop messenger Well thats only three lines of batch file code to get around that ... only issue is that it requires admin access to start a service ... has the admin account been compromised? NET SEND uses NetBIOS, and the ports NetBIOS requires are 137, 138 and 139 ... either enable the firewall if you are using Windows XP or disable File and Printer Sharing HTH EDIT I apologize, I misread your post and believed that you stopped the service and not disabled it. With that in mind, disregard the first half of my post. Have you also considered using IPSEC policies to restrict the use of those ports and/or IPs?

Link to help with that http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1041/ Have you been playing with group policies? You can also check to make sure the add remove applet hasnt been corrupted through a SFC /SCANNOW. HTH

Again for those of you following in this thread, or for a great resource @ APKs expense .... Quote: As long as you have had the service running (I know you like to tweak them)and the disk space, I believe System Restore will cover MSC files and there associated GUIDS .... As it covers, drivers, software configurations and installations, registry changes and the such. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treevie...in/XPSysRst.asp Taking a step backwards, those files you wish to delete aren't using reserved names, correct? Otherwise you might need POSIX to remove them. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;120716 Have you tried registering / running these MSCs in Safe Mode? What about using MSCONFIG to EXPAND the necessary files off of your Windows XP CD ... SFC should not complain then. Running SFC /SCANNOW Just throwing out more options. Anyone else got some ideas .... I am beginning to hit the bottom of the barrel. -

Check the email ... also the email I was trying before is the one from pixelstation in your profile .... Quote: Disable your Workstation &/or Server service temporarily & try to run secpol.msc, gpedit.msc, or rsop.msc... Done, and the MSC files in question still work.... For those follwing the thread I asked APK if he tried doing a System Restore or re-installing SP1 ... I imagine there is nothing in the logs as well .... -
