Windows Server 2003 Family ---Windows 2000 Server Family Standard Edition ---Windows 2000 Server Enterprise Edition ---Windows 2000 Advanced Server Datacenter Edition ---Windows 2000 Datacenter Server Web Edition ---No Equivalent You can only upgrade to an equivalent or higher operating system. You can’t “downgrade” to a less powerful operating system, as some functionality might be lost in the process. This means you can’t move from Windows 2000 Server (or other server products in the Windows 2000 family) to the Windows Server 2003, Web Edition without removing the earlier operating system and performing a new installation. Quote: Can Windows 2000 advanced server be upgraded to windows 2003 standard server ???? In other words, no.

windows 2003 server no support for older hardware???
DS3Circuit replied to Tomay's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: I guess my HW is kinda old too Samething with Macs .... SCSI support is good yet questionable at times with OS 10.x and the drivers for the Matrox RTE Card are still in Beta. Either hardware manufactures play catch up with the OS or they just dont play at all ..... -
NT 4 PDC. I want a 2000 BDC for it Possible??? How?
DS3Circuit replied to duhmez's topic in Everything New Technology
You should read this http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treevie...an/migntw2k.asp And if this is for a SOHO network, this as well http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=260362 If you have any particular questions, feel free to ask away. -
NT 4 PDC. I want a 2000 BDC for it Possible??? How?
DS3Circuit replied to duhmez's topic in Everything New Technology
Quote: BDC emulator Windows 2000 can only operate as a PDC emulator ... you would need to migrate to or create a 2000 domain for win2k to be a domain controller. You could always create a backup copy of your SAM before you migrate to win2k on a offline nt4 bdc. You can also add NT4 bdc to a win2k mixed mode domain. Sorry though, no such thing as a NT4 PDC and a 2000 BDC running in a single domain context. -

Quote: Anyone have any info on WindowsPE? Maybe I can expand some thoughts on the page you found. Windows Preinstallation Environment is a minimal operating system, based on the Windows XP kernel and contains the minimal functionality you need to run and automate Windows Setup. WinPE lets you create (diskpart.exe) and format (format.com) disk partitions, and gives you access to both NTFS file system partitions (with some constraints) and your internal network. The environment supports all mass storage devices that use Windows 2000 or Windows XP drivers, and you can incorporate additional drivers as new devices become available. Certainly one of the cooler aspects is to prevent its use as a pirated operating system, WinPE automatically exits whatever shell it is running and reboots after 24 hours of continuous use. Hopefully, that shed some more light on the subject. *Edit: And yes I believe Automated Deployment Services uses Windows PE*

Ideas ... 1. Create a parallel install of NT 4 Server. 2. Restore from backups. 3. Have you tried safe mode? 4. What were the roles of the server? 5. Tools for recovery http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/utilities.shtml 6. Service Pack and hotfix levels? 7. Hardware or software raid? The above is not necessary in the order of what you should do G'luck

Quote: Couldn't he also could use NT resource kit tools for this easily enough as well like cacls etc. if XP Home does not have the security permissions settings in its Explorer.exe menus? Sure why not, though for someone using Home Edition, I imagine they havent played with the Resource Kit tools at all ..... APK, I have yet to see (work with) Home Edition myself Enjoy the weekend.

Though if you went the route of NTFS for windows XP home you could lock out users by configuring the ACL in Safe Mode. convert /fs:ntfs http://www.pcmag.com/print_article/0,3048,a=24758,00.asp My $0.02

From my understanding and implementation of WLANs, you need an Access Point. Adhoc is meant to carry a signal from one station to another, not to create a signal. Infrastructure mode broadcasts out the wireless signal without using other stations to carry it along. By stations I mean wireless enabled devices. So basically get a SOHO AP to accomplish what you need. HTH

Adding drivers to the Win2k boot disks?
DS3Circuit replied to DazedAndConfused's topic in Everything New Technology
http://www.spc.org.nc/it/TechHead/unattended_install_of_third_part.htm http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=254078 http://www.bink.nu/Bootcd/default.htm I would suggest making a custom CD of win2k with integrated service packs and drivers as needed. The links above should point you in the right direction. Also I would recommend that you search the forums, this topic has been heavily covered by DosFreak and others. HTH -
As always clutch you make a good point, but sonicblue's support for this device has been up to par ... with firmware revisions from 1.0 to 1.83 with the last one being only 3 weeks old makes me believe they wish to keep their MP3 line going. One of the best christmas presents I got for myself

Dial in to a NT4 Server using a Sony P800 mobile phone
DS3Circuit replied to headhurts's topic in Everything New Technology
Is your NT server configured to pass dhcp leases to those who dial in through RAS .... you can check the DHCP server if a lease has been handed to your IP ... sorry its literally been years since i worked with nt ras and some details are escaping me .... -
Another thing .... how are you copying n pasting the files? If you are using the GUI then you are using Core mode which transfers data in 4kb increments ... if you use CLI then its in Raw mode which moves data in 60 kb increments .... This article should help you understand where I am going .. and maybe some registry tweaking is in order..... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;223140 Also have you pinned the NICs at the appropriate speed and duplex?

Dial in to a NT4 Server using a Sony P800 mobile phone
DS3Circuit replied to headhurts's topic in Everything New Technology
You would need to configure your phone for the same authentication protocols that NT4 RAS allows.... IIRC correctly NT4 supports PAP, Shiva, MSCHAP. Need more info needed for further help. -
Does NT4 have its own VPN software or do i need to buy addit
DS3Circuit replied to headhurts's topic in Everything New Technology
PPTP is native to NT4. L2TP as well as 3rd party VPN solutions such as SonicWall require an addon.
