Securing Wireless Networks Part #1... from EWeek
DS3Circuit replied to Mr.Guvernment's topic in Security
now just imagine the difficulty in getting 802.1x as well as VPN authentication to work over a heterogenous environment ..... PDA's, laptops, tablet PCs, blackberry ...... then from Windows ... Linux .... Apple.... HA is a wonder that after 6 months, we are still in "beta" for our wireless environment -
Moving initial duties to different server with AD
DS3Circuit replied to mthaler's topic in Networking
Sorry, I am just used to typing out acronyms ... ADUC - Active directory users and computers ADSS - Active directory sites and services ADDT - Active directory domains and trusts NTDS - NT Directory services CLI - command line interface, as oppossed to GUI FSMO - flexible single master operations DFS - distributed file system. www.labmice.net for a further explanation of what each is, or if you have more specific questions, feel free to inquire. -
Have you tried enabling sector by sector copying of the physical drive. I know this works well with ghost, though with ghost it craps out with a triple boot system.

Ok folks, care to tell me what I am doing wrong here. Ghost Enterprise Server 7.5 Win2k server and clients ... all up to date. 10 meg connections, 3com 1100s, with 100 meg uplinks all leading into a cisco 6500 switch. Multicast enabled on the 3coms ... Multicast enabled on the cisco with PIM, and IGMP 2.0 enabled per interface. I can only receive a maximum (not consistent) of 15 clients to connect to the console ... the other machines, all in the same subnet, cannot ping the ghost server. So you think its a bandwidth issue? Well I can still surf the web on machines that wont be ghosted, again in the same vlan. I have been experimenting with Sparse and Dense Mode on the switch and the "time" pruning of the multicast tables. But basically, what I am asking does anyone have experience with the ghosting of numerous machines in a lab environment and what possible tips and hints that you might throw my way. Thanks

Quote: Have you considered, after you test this & find out it is solid, to submit it to a place like www.jsiinc.com/reghack.htm OR some other site you go to that is networking oriented as a document that could help others? * If not, please do it... Good point, there is little to no documentation upon configuring networks to use ghost multicast. And yes APK, it was a huge hassel .... the powers that be delegated the migration from Altiris to Ghost and to allow me to figure out how. Basically its a 500 lab environment that requires daily updates and upgrades. Quote: P.S.=> Heck, if not a website (probably the most easily viewed by most folks especially networking fiends), submit it to Windows .NET magazine! apk Never thought of anyone actually learning from me .... hmmm maybe I will submit it. Thanks for the ideas man as well ! There is nothing like bouncing ideas off of other qualified people ! Good luck as well if you are in NE USA ... I am watching the snow fall and accumulate as I type.

If its a standalone machine then I dont know how. If the machine is in a domain, and you are using domain accounts, you can remove permissions through either delegation of authority or changing the administrator's attributes using ADSI

So now that XP has its SP1. Which do you prefer Win2k or XP?
DS3Circuit replied to pr-man's topic in Everything New Technology
It depends all onto the experience of the users as well as the environment. Personally though ... I go with this Win2k for the work environmnet XP for home Though this all may change in the next couple of months. -
Its been quite a while since I have supported Ex5.5. Are you asking how to move mailboxes? Cause if you are, using Exchange Server 5.5's Move Mailbox tool is the simplest approach to moving Exchange Server 5.5 mailboxes. (You access Move Mailbox from Microsoft Exchange Administrator's Tools menu.) This tool will move Exchange Server 5.5 mailboxes to another Exchange Server 5.5 or Exchange 2000 Server system in the same site as the original mailbox location. You can't use this tool to move mailboxes between sites or organizations HTH

HA! Think I finally got it. I created a virtual loopback adapter as the single RP for all igmp traffic. The table gets built off those IPs and ghost can blast out its image. The problem I had before was that I made an RP for each interface and the tables were not getting "properly built?" PITA

Moving initial duties to different server with AD
DS3Circuit replied to mthaler's topic in Networking
To be safe Transfer the 5 fmso roles from dc1 to dc2 and make dc2 a GC ADUC can do 3 of the roles ADSS can do the GC under NTDS ADDT can do 1 role. and you will have to load the schema snapin to transfer the final role. If you prefer to do this through CLI, then use ntdsutil.exe. Unless DC1 provided DNS, DHCP, WINS, DFS Root, then that should do it, otherwise transfer those services and/or correct IP configs to DC2. New Norton AntiVirus Definitions 05/19/2003 updated
DS3Circuit replied to BladeRunner's topic in Software
Quote: I did not even know of another method, how similar is what I did to what you know now to do manually according to Symantec, I would like to know... thanks! Our fix is actually pretty basic, uninstall LiveUpdate and re-install (plus deleting a couple of folders that uninstall doesn't - this is actually the most critical part). Then, IF you're setup correctly and have all your clients up[censored] from your server, you're fixed. If you have all the clients up[censored] from the website....you've got a loonnngggg boring day ahead of you! HTH this helps anyone else who ran into this. Time for actual work .... cya folks. -
Hmm good articles ..... gracias .... something else for me to look at, and to be honest, this is probably one of the few times that I forgot to go and check technet .... Doh! Quote: Again, sorry man... last thing I want to do is lead you on a wild goose-chase, that's NOT my intention here, you've helped me & others here too many times already to do you wrong like that!) No worries man .... I know any help that I receive is good help. Quote: believe it... I know the feeling, don't we all in this field with all of its many parts & specializations, at some point? You KNOW it! With every passing day Quote: DS3Circuit wrote: I have enabled IGMP routing on the supervisor card on the 6500 with dense mode multicast ---- they all lead back to the same RP. I don't know enough about that man, to really be of any help... other than saying I KNOW I spotted something about multicast in those snapins (at least I think this is where it was, heck, I am nearly SURE of it). I don't know that much either about configuring multicast and igmp tables ... its all about trials and tribulation Wish it was a license limit of 15 users .... shame I got another 585 licenses to fill. Hey APK, thanks for the input, it is always welcomed and appreciated !!

New Norton AntiVirus Definitions 05/19/2003 updated
DS3Circuit replied to BladeRunner's topic in Software
Just a quick heads up to anyone using Symantec AV. The Norton anti-virus definitions file for 11th Feb 2003 (.004 I am told) was somehow corrupted. In our fairly large environment, all workstations that received that update no longer had working AV. Our test labs with newer versions of NAV have experienced similar issues. We are finding that manual steps are required to get NAV working again with working signatures are rather cumbersome. Symantec seems to be keeping the info very close to their chest. They do acknowledge the problem happened yesterday if you call with an issue regarding it. However I couldn't find any mention anywhere else. -
Still havent been able to find the snapin I have enabled IGMP routing on the supervisor card on the 6500 with dense mode multicast ---- they all lead back to the same RP. Cross your fingers, this is beginning to become annoying.

In 5.5 I believe this is what you need http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=3572&pg=3 In exchange 2k its far easier with a "catch all" event sink. GTG sorry for the quick answer -

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/TechNet/ittasks/support/corpwu.asp I realize that installing this software might be going about it the long way, but it does certainly gather all the hotifxes and ie patches that you need. We use this in our business, quite reliable. EDIT And yes you can archive the downloads and burn them -
Front Page 02 has the Wrong Password and I want to change it
DS3Circuit replied to Christianb's topic in Software
If you are using FP2002, and doing direct editing to your webpage, then it maybe the extensions on the server side have gone corrupt ... a possibility. Easy enough to fix by deleting and reapplying the extensions, which is done on the server. I don't know where the cached password is stored in FP2002 though. Just throwing out a possibility. *1* Quick Rant --- FP extensions suck! Plan and outright. From the AIX version from long ago to the FP2002 ones. We have to support them here, as FTPing is sometimes seen as a nuisance. End Rant ..... *1* Hope I understood you correctly. -
