    Exchange 2000 Enterprise Help

Unless your using 5.5 and 2000 in a mixed mode environment for exchange, why would you use the 5.5 administrative tools when all you need is System Manager, ADUC, as your primary tools to administrator your Exchange 2000 Server? Might wanna talk another look into what you are trying to do David1982.

"But I go to administration tool" ... you talking about System Manager, ADUC, or which tool?? Generally, when win2k asks you for the server to connect to ... you would put in the FQDN.

    lan problem

This is all going by the assumption that the Netgear router allows broadcast traffic ..... 99.9 % sure it does Windows XP will always be the master browser in your configuration LauraLee. With 98 and ME balancing it out between the two. If the XP box isnt on, the role gets transferred down to the ME box and so on. Announcements to add computers to this browse list come in the increments of 12 minutes. With this in mind ... in can take a MAXIMUM of 36 minutes for all your computers to be listed LauraLee (12 + 12 +12), more realistically, HALF of that is more assummed. Backup Master Browsers only exist for every 32 computers on a physical segment. So for the SOHO user, you can rule out the option that I can "load balance" my browse list. Computer Browser Service is NOT ACCURATE in any way. To allow for lost datagram frames (lost announcements), the master browser does not remove a machine from its list until 3 announcement periods have passed. If the machine is not shut down gracefully or if network connectivity is lost, the machine can remain in the master browser's list for up to 36 minutes. After this time, the master browser removes the servers name. So after all this .... how can I improve my Network Neighborhood browsing?? 1. Use Universal Naming Conventions ... this would be START / RUN / "\\nameofmyserver" (without the quotes) 2. Drive Mappings 3. Using BROWSTAT and/or BROWMON to force browser service announcements or to move (tickle) your browse list from one machine to another. 4. Use WINS and/or DNS 5. Use LMHOSTS and/or HOSTS Questions?? Comments ??? Complaints ???

    ftp on RP114 Netgear Router

Am I correct to understand that once you OPENED and MAPPED ports 20 and 21 from the ROUTER to your MACHINE, that your ENTIRE Internet access goes under??? After a period of 10 minutes?? Well let me give you a few things ... 1. Upgrade the firmware for your router. I have found that fixes/updates are quite popular for SOHO broadband devices. 2. Does your ISP monitor outbound traffic? To explain, several ISPs in my area have 2 rates ... Business and Home. They differeniate between the 2 by bandwidth as well as protocols being used on the OUTBOUND (such as FTP, SMTP, NNTP, and the such) Also when discovered, I have had several SOHO users *bumped* when using business protocols on the OUTBOUND. They use SNMP as well as RMON on their end to monitor this for those who are curious. This isnt to alarm you, just make you aware. 3. Try just using port 21 ... i know on several cisco 650 routers that use CBOS (not IOS), I had to configure both ports 20 and 21. On my DLINK at home, I just needed 21. 4. Whatcha using for ftp hosting? IIS, PWS, Serv-U FTP, IP Switch FTP, etc ??? Anyone else wish to chime in on this one?

    ftp on RP114 Netgear Router

interesting interface ... let me make a few corrections Start Port - End Port - IP 1. 20 - 20 - 192.168.0.4 2. 21 - 21 - 192.168.0.4 You also might wish to uncheck the "respond to ping on internet wan port" as it increases your "stealth" as no one will be able to PING you. Though if you need it for diagnostics, by all means, leave it on.

    ftp on RP114 Netgear Router

Map ports 20 and 21 to the machine that will be hosting the FTP services. ... not so sure about 20 though (the actual payload goes through that one, but the commands you issue run through 21 .. IIRC) This can be done through the Web interface. HTH.

    IIS and anonymous login

Nah not at all These are permissions for ANYONE who interacts with the file system. Including local, shared folders, published folders, ftp access ... and so on
  11. DS3Circuit

    IIS and anonymous login

Could be a couple of things ... 1. Have you changed the default permissions for your site in the ISM MMC snapin. By default, all non-administrative sites have read access to the IUSER account. 2. You check NTFS permissions in the folders/files so that the annonymous user account IUSER has appropriate access.

    lan problem

Well to clarify your WINS Proxy question ... If you have non-WINS (non MS OS PCs) machines on your subnet and want them to be visible participants, you will want a Proxy Agent to be active within this subnet. On a SOHO network like yours, your netbios resolution would primarily come from broadcasts. Heres the registry key for that HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters and set the EnableProxy parameter to 1. (NT/2K/XP) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP (9X/ME) But for you, it should be set to 0. Strange, XP will always win the browser service elections when on a network with 2000 pro, 98, and so on. It would maintain the copy of the browse list. And as long as you have had proper login credentials, you would retrieve this list ..... ...BLINKS... 8) Must be something I aint seeing or that you havent said
  13. regedit /s mynewreg.reg The above will work, provided the user has permissions to write to the registry .....Insomnia..... x)

Below you will find Q articles that deal with the browser service. Are there errors in the Event Log that correspond to "The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times ..." and such? I would also like to recommend LMHOSTS for Netbios Resolution. You will find it in the %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc folder. Place static entries for your other machines in it. Still sounds though that you modified the User groups on the XP machine so much so that the DACLs lock out the 98 users browsing to it. (Unfortunately, this deals with DCs but I am including it anyway) http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=257942 Error Message: Unable to Browse the Selected Domain Because the Following Error Occurred... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=188305 Troubleshooting the Microsoft Computer Browser Service

Agreed Quote: (That's FAR from all the things you can do with secpol.msc & Pro/Server versions levels of security & policies...) Far better than the old POLEDIT used with NT and 9X

    local security policy?

Umm well according to this Q article ... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q308226 HOW TO: Enable or Disable the CTRL+ALT+DELETE Sequence for Logging On in Windows XP it says it works for Windows XP Home Edition Am I mistaken in what you are looking for? What is "Generic Host Processor for Win32"?

http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs/search?q=Generic+Host+Processor+for+Win32 It allows your system to listen to service requestes depending on the services that you are running ... I allow mine at home to run, without any problems ... granted you can be extra cautious but I see no need for the SOHO user. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q263201 Sounds like these processes might be causing some of those pop ups My $0.02

Sharing printers and files to the network

An age old issue, next time I would like to suggest searching the forums 1. Enable the Guest account on 2K ... poor for security 2. Create an Account on the 2K box and login into that account on the 98 machine using Client for Microsoft Networks. tada

    Changing networked hard drive name?

As an addendum I would like to recommend using the DOS command LABEL. It can also be scripted

    mapped drive user name

I am seeing this as one of two things 1. Multiple user profiles would make this easier if you want to regulate drive mappings. 2. Have you tried using logon and if neccessary log off scripts using either NET USE to build a mapping and NET USE /D to remove it. I imagine by asking it to rebuild the shares after a deletion that you need to fully authenticate username and password. Try batch files ! No way to test though. I am outta the office until Jan 2.
