Win2K Event Log Error (RE: Slow Shutdown...)
DS3Circuit replied to mrestine's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Well I got a couple of things for you regarding that event log error number. 1. Try recreating a new user profile ... the problem lies with UsrClass.dat and UsrClass.dat.log in that profile. 2. Disable services that might be keeping the machine from shutting down (in other words, running actively) such as Nvidia Driver Helper, and or Virus Scanner Software. 3. Upgrade to SP3 4. Set Windows Management Instrumentation to Manual (has worked for me) 5. Open the MMC and add the Group Policy snap-in, then open the Group Policy editor. Go to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Logon and find the policy "Maximum retries to unload and update user profile." Do not click "Disable" nor "Not Configured" as that just will use the default of 60. Rather, lower the # of tries to unload downward from 60. I figured, "If you can't unload it, don't bother trying", so I set mine to 0 and shutdown is (finally!) instantaneous once again. 6. There are two Microsoft hotfixes, Q281267 and Q285192. Woah, hope this helps you out !! -
Well quite honestly, its one of those "give back to the community" kind of deals. I remember coming to ntcompatible back when Windows 2000 went from Beta 3 to RC1 and I needed help with my old school Voodoo2 to do some GLIDE. And I have always returned for more Other than that I have always appreciated the "professionalism" (not to sound uptight and IBM-ish, if ya know what I mean ) of the site and its forums. And the reason I know a "tad" about QoS is that I am engineering a WLAN for a college. And I need to distribute a secure multimedia multicast to numerous heterogenous wireless devices (its ok to laugh at me for that one, I did) Well thats DS3Circuit and his story ... thank you for welcoming me to NTcompatible forums APK, I'm sure we will learn alot from each other.

Nope Win2k with a Sp3 slipstream doesnt correct that ... It has something to do with the Win2k utils such as CHKDSK .... memory escapes me with the particulars ... IIRC ?

Zone SERIALS should be in diferences of 1 at the most. I believe though in DNS AD mode, they should all be equal (?) until a change is made in the DNS table. I would also start using NSLOOKUP and DNSCMD to start troubleshooting. Happy Holidays n G'Luck APK, yeah you could say I have some sort of experience with Microsoft products

First Windows 2000 AD Integrated DNS Servers are all seen as SOA Second The problems with your zone transfers ... Are the DNS servers listed in NAME SERVERS tab, and are they allowed to do ZONE TRANSFERS (Right Click the Forward Lookup Zone to see these settings) Also are the SERIAL NUMBERS way off? Third Secure Updates Only mean that transfers occur only with computers listed in AD. Its the holidays and my brain is soaking in egg nogg , hope i didnt confuse you more

Ron_Jeremy Sorry to hear that the onboard NIC is only 10 megs. Gotta love Compaq
-
Have you tried ... 1. Updated Intel Nic Drivers 2. Updated Router firmware ... unlikely but who knows. 3. Are the cables being used CAT 5 or higher? Were the cables made by you or are they commercial? 4. Have you tried other ports on the router to rule out that possiblity. I have had bad ports on linksys routers before. 5. Try another NIC in the PC I imagine the tablet PC when plugged into the port works fine at 100 megs, correct? Trial n Error is what needs to be done here

Problem with XP's zero configuration wireless networking.
DS3Circuit replied to oXide's topic in Networking
Well I can share somethings that I ran into with DLINK, CISCO, and 3COM wireless cards. 1) 3com cards would let me reconfigure them, by reinstalling them (laptop models), what I mean is by pulling them out and then pushing them back in. 2) Alot of the settings can be configured through Device Manager for the particular card. Including SSID, Speed, WEP keys, Etc. 3) You logged in as an admin right? 4) Uninstall and reinstall the device? Latest Drivers? 5) Is it just you or are another wireless devices having problems accessing the WAP? -
More than one Active Directory on the same domain
DS3Circuit replied to htsource's topic in Networking
If you are looking into replicating Active Directory from one machine to another 1. DCPROMO the new machine 2. Have replication transfer the database 3. Split the 5 FSMO roles from the old DC to the new DC, if so wished. 4. Profiles wont change on client machines ... profiles are SID based. 5. And of course, making the new DC a GC through ADSS ... err follow clutches link Hmnmm, thats the basic run down, if anyone else wishes to add more, by all means :-D -
Page files, should I have more than one?
DS3Circuit replied to CyberGenX's topic in Everything New Technology
To estimate how many megabytes your paging file needs. Load all the applications you normally use. Open task manager(press control-alt-delete) click the performance tab and find the peak commit charge. This is the maximum amount of memory your system has used since it was last started. Add 128MB to this number and this is a good setting to start with. The optimal configuration is to set the minimum and maximum to the same size preventing the OS from resizing the file. Location is a complicated decision and is limited by the number of drives in your PC. There are numerous ways to configure this with each solution giving you a different amount of performance. Below are some suggestions: Optimal = Put a paging file on each hard disk(or multiple hard disks) that does not contain operating system files. Good = Put one paging file on a stripe set with no parity. Adequate = Put one paging file on a stripe set with parity. Worst = Put the paging file on the same drive as the Windows system files. WOAH .... Does the clear up how much you should allocate and where it should be placed? And after all that info, my answer would be it is good to place static pagefiles across multiple phyiscal volumes -
Glad to hear that it works for everyone

Mandatory profiles is just another way ... depending on the environment. Con2Prt and some scripting as was mentioned above can be placed into login scripts and/or Group Policies

I use a combo of ISA and the DLINK DI614+ for firewall and WAP, though I do recommend Linksys to most of my customers. Makes me wish I bought stock in that company a year or two ago At work though we are all PIX

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q278887 Basically, map the ports from the router to the machine for both inbound and outbound

Appears the Quicktime Player 6.x uses pretty much the same setup as 5.x with the QuickTimeInstaller.ini. [QTSETUP] 32Bit=FALSE 16Bit=FALSE NO_DIALOGS=TRUE SHOW_SAMPLE=FALSE SHOW_README=FALSE SHOW_PROGRAMFOLDER=FALSE REGISTRATION_DIALOG=FALSE LICENSE_OPTION=2 SUPPRESS_SPEED_DIALOG=TRUE SUPPRESS_PROXY_DIALOG=TRUE INSTALL_QTJAVA=TRUE INSTALL_QD3D=TRUE INSTALL_QTINFO=TRUE [QTPrefs] ConnectionSpeed=Intranet CSMultipleStreams=0 And of course you can get the full installer from: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone/

WinXP can't connect to network shares after a certain time
DS3Circuit replied to Borutra's topic in Networking
Any errors logged in the Event Viewer to go by? This being the PDC as well as the client machine Have you tried adding the machine back into the domain? -
www.wown.com www.practicallynetworked.com barring those info loaded websites for the SOHO user. Are there accounts on each machine for you to log into, that are the same on the other machine? start \ run \ "\\mymachine\C$" (without the quotes), returns a login prompt or an error message? The 98 machine requires that you log in to the XP machine with an account, or enable the guest account on the XP machine. More info needed.

NTBACKUP = GUI and CLI ... Comes with Win2k Server Veritas BackupExec 8.x is fine, but perhaps overkill for what his needs are. You "can" setup a Win2k group policy to keep the drives from becoming idle "the red X on the drives." Under local/Domain security policy / Local policies / Security Policies / Amount of Idle time before disconnecting session ... default should be 15 minutes, change it to what suites your security needs. Basically its how long a SMB session should last before disconnecting. With household WAPs, that is what you can expect with 802.11b, speed wise ... add VPN overhead, and it will further lessen. Can I suggest purchasing a DAT5/DLT/LTO ($$$) tape drive. It would provide a more solid, speeder backup over a better medium. Any more questions? Thanks for the support fellas. DosFreak ... ever thought about switching to ArcServe Backup ?
-
Yes NTBACKUP can be scheduled, and it will do what you want xcopy to do. A plus side is that there are logs created by the app to tell you when and how and if it fails. I wouldnt use xcopy for a daily, reliable backup The syntax looks right .. you check to make sure the mapping for the Y drive is still there?
-
The account that runs the task, has the password changed or has the account changed in anyway? Do you get the same errors when running xcopy from the command line? Why not use ntbackup to do this? Best part its free :-) Worse part is it doesnt do remote system states. Have you tried other tools like robocopy (from the resource kit) to do this? just some $0.02

Block by MAC address Its possible on my DLINK router so I am sure you can do it on a Linksys

NT finds domain controllers through 1. Local cache 2. Wins 3. Netbios broadcasts ... ya sure everything is running fine from that stand point? DNS ? ... It also helps to add subnets to your AD Sites and Services if such is the case. www.eventid.net to help ya with further Event IDs When we encounter this error at work, it has to do with name resolution and the ability for workstations to find network services thereby pointing to DCs. Everyone above though has stated correct answers as well, Im just extending the possibilities.

Tray Network Connection Icon doesn't show up to power users
DS3Circuit replied to Mirch's topic in Networking
Service Pack and Hotfix Levels? Latest Nic Drivers? I dont seem to have that problem on any of my clients computers. They are just regular users as well --> Win2k SP2 and SP3. Intel and 3com nics. Have you tried creating other users and do they have the same symptons ... it could be a corrupt profile as well...
