W2K-SP4: What is the verdict?
DS3Circuit replied to hardwarecrazy's topic in Everything New Technology
Dunno how many have seen this from Bink's site, but there appear to be quite a few "quirks" http://www.w2knews.com/anecdotes.htm Think I'm gonna wait a while before pushing to SP4. Good to see you back APK -

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/windowsupdate/sus/sp1relnotes.asp http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/susclient/default.asp Service Packs when expanded can be pushed out with GPOs using the update.msi Hotfixes use SUS when the client is installed ... use ADM templates (which are included with SUS) to push it out. Best part ... its free -
Just a thought. Windows XP seems to forcing you to use the "forced" guest account. If you have simple file sharing installed and you are not on a domain this could be your problem. "When a Windows XP Professional–based computer is not joined to a domain, the simple sharing model is fundamentally different than the model used in previous versions of Windows. By default, all users logging on to such computers over the network are forced to use the Guest account; this is called ForceGuest." "ForceGuest is enabled by default, but can be disabled on Windows XP Professional by disabling the local security policy Network Access: Force Network Logons using Local Accounts to Authenticate as Guest. By contrast, on Windows XP Professional–based computers joined to a domain, the default sharing and security settings are the same as in Windows 2000. Likewise, if the ForceGuest policy setting on a Windows XP Professional–based computer not joined to a domain is disabled, then the computer behaves as in Windows 2000." http://network.fament.com/helmig/j_helmig/wxpsimsh.htm

office 200 won't uninstall!
DS3Circuit replied to Radioactive Frog's topic in Everything New Technology
Did you try the reference MSI files in the C:\%systemroot%\Installer? Its a hidden folder and if there are many in there, sort by details and author (not on by default) This is the reason why you either keep copies of CDs or do network installs. G'Luck -
This works for XP http://www.ntfaq.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=39255 Try it in 2003. Changing VLKs so you can run windowsupdate hmmm? 8)

Even simple NAT devices like common SOHO firewalls will cause problems when doing direct connections to Fast Track and Gnutella networks. Wanna test? https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 I truly hope this isnt at work ......... but then again, if it is, people like you keep www.packeteer.com in great business.

ndproxy.sys is a ppp wrapper for ATM. It is the central driver for running residential dsl (as the above link states) over ppp. I speculate its a component of LANE (local area network emulation ..... without going through my MSDN CDs). Since ATM hasnt been widely distributed for the SOHO user ..... even for most users .... this standard seems to have slowly died down .... I wouldnt worry too much about the driver. If you want to reinstall it .... reinstall SP1. HTH

Update Service Packs Centrally
DS3Circuit replied to Rattlesnake's topic in Everything New Technology
That is quite a situation regarding the deployment of updates. Altiris and Ghost dont have ways to deploy services packs. No scripts and no GPOs .... Is SMS on site? The situation you described is like using a computer without a keyboard I would start with http://www.stbernard.com/products/updateexpert/products_updateexpert.asp (great software) www.appdeploy.com (as a reference for other means and products). -
I run Starcraft fine on my Philips Acoustic Edge with the 1.86 WHQL drivers. What patch level is starcraft at and what version of Direct X you got running?

It would be very beneficial if you posted your errors in the event viewer.

http://www.slipstick.com/rules/customactions.htm http://www.slipstick.com/dev/vb.htm I would use VB scripting before attempting any other language. The second link should help you more. Also exchange2000@yahoogroups.com might be a better place.

http://personal.cfw.com/~tkprit/page/leak.html The above link is for starters .... but more information is needed for a better diagnosis. Heres a freeware util (similar to process walker in 2000 Datacenter) http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml -

XP asking for password on network shares
DS3Circuit replied to bytezboy's topic in Everything New Technology
Check NTFS permissions as well as share permissions. Remember the most restrictive combination of permissions apply (share + file system). Default NTFS formatting is different between 2000 and XP when permissions are assigned. Make sure the account names and passwords are the same on both machines (no blank passwords). It might be easier just to make sure everyone is an admin and go through the C$ D$ shares. Hope that clears that up for ya. -

How Can I Install and Configr my ISA Server in Win2000Pro
DS3Circuit replied to abrarmalik's topic in Networking
ISA needs to be installed on a server platform .... 2000 or 2003 The web caching service on ISA is very good IMHO and is effective even on SOHO networks. For all your ISA needs http://www.microsoft.com/isaserver/
