Another thought is XP is on the NT Kernal. Make sure you've created an account for both your XP box AND your XP user on your NT or 2000 server. An authenticated box and user should solve your issue.

I'd like to hear "true" horror stories about actual NT4 --> Active Directory upgrades and migrations.

I understand the migration. I just want the horror stories. I'm building a worst case scenario. I've already built the test network but want to be prepared for the unforseen.

What is the best performance tweak you have found for Win2k?
RobEubank replied to pr-man's topic in Customization & Tweaking
To answer the original question, converting over to NTFS and adding lots of memory had the biggest performance enhancement for me. -
Video Card Drivers are are a great place to start but not the only limitation. If the monitor drivers are Standard VGA, the operating system will limit you to16 bolors. Make sure the monitor is listed as Plug and Play Monitor or better yet by appropriate Mkae and Model for best results. Since you stated that changing monitors started the whole issue I'd be willing to bet you need to properly identify your monitor to your operating system.

Can I use Norton Personal Firewall with Server 2000?
RobEubank replied to HeWhoLaughsLast's topic in Software
Norton Personal Firewall and Symantec Desktop Firewall both work on Win2K Pro, Server and Advanced Server. You'll have to rewrite the default rules as they tend to contradict what a server is there for. The Symantec Desktop Firewall doesn't seem to save logs or provide a web history for some reason on the server versions but the protection is there. -
I have several workstations that due to software compatibility issues are required to be dual boot. Win 98 and Win2K. I have the machines configured with 98 on the C (FAT32) Partition and 2000 on the D(NTFS) partition. Win 98 was purposfully configured to be without network capability. The machines are great and we've had no problems with them except --- When we went to pull an image from them Imagecast craps out. 8) The only way I was able to duplicate the drives configuration was to use a hardware IWILL RAID card to mirror the drive and then run newsid/rename etc. I'd love to be able to blast an image because as it is right now whenever I need to rebuild one of these machines, I have to take my home server down to use the RAID card.
-
After several attempts, I have to admit this is beyond me. The sector by sector dies at 42%. The only way I've been able to replicate this disk image is using a hardware RAID to mirror the disk and then run newsid.exe.

Unlike in the past, the newer versions of Nero and Roxio are quite a bit more intuitive when it comes to getting the job done. The boot sector for the 2000 (.bin file)is only if you don't have it. I too have had mixed results in creating bootable CDs for several operation systems. The instructions I referenced above have worked for me every time so that's what I use. It is possible I'm performing some unnecessary steps but they aren't hurting anything and they work. (Just my 2 cents )

I need to configure a couple of workstations (Win2k - SP2) to reboot themselves after the screensaver has been active for more than 30 minutes. The screen saver is password protected. I need to log out the user, and return the computer to a usable state for the next user "without administrative intevention". Is there any way to tweak the power management settings to completely reboot the machine or at least log off the active user after a specific period of inactivity? The problem I'm attempting to work around is locally authenticated users on these systems typically leave without logging out and forces the admins to log in or reset the machine. I also plan to change the shut down routine for non admins to reboot instead of shutting down. (This I can do through policies)

Screen Saver - Power Mgmt - Reboot - Help?
RobEubank replied to RobEubank's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Thanks -
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/morganpugh/mrp_tutorials/nero.htm has a pretty good guide on how to Slipstream SP 3 with Nero (If you don't want the integrated SP then skip those steps (4-8, 16-19) . Please pay particualr attention to STEP 28. It is a show stopper. Without that it doesn't work. Hope this is what you're looking for.

Screen Saver - Power Mgmt - Reboot - Help?
RobEubank replied to RobEubank's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Unfortunately the user isn't an admin and thus the Winexit.scr doesn't work properly. I even granted full control of the "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version" subkey to no avail. The only way it works as advertised is to make the user an admin and that's not an acceptable solution. Any other suggestions would very much be appreciated. BTW, If you have the screensaver set to password protected, Winexit doesn't work at all. It just locks the screen like any other .SCR. -
Screen Saver - Power Mgmt - Reboot - Help?

That's definitely a start in the right direction. Thanks. -
I'll give that a shot. I think I did try it before but have since reloaded the server.

Win2k Clients, Win2k Server, Roaming Profiles, SLOW LOGIN!!!
RobEubank replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Networking
Quote: At work, we have a Win2k server, and several Win2k Clients, all users have a roaming profile. The profiles are on the server. Each profile is under 10 MB. When anyone logs into their computer, it is REALLY SLOW. Like, it takes about 10 minutes for them to get on. Which is way to slow. We do have a 10 MBPS HUB, but I know it can't be that slow. I've tried a 100 MBPS switch but that seemed to make no difference in speed. What is going on? I can't seem to find why it is going so slow. Can anyone help? We use roaming profiles and have several hundred users with profiles ranging anywhere from 10MB to 2GB. As was stated earlier, a lot of what gets stored when a user logs out is useless information. Go into one of the slow users' profile directory on the server and see if Temporary Internet Files is being cached. When it comes to crazy logins I've seen permissions and settings on that particular folder wreak havoc on login efficiency. While you're there, look in the "recent" folder it caches document shortcuts (sometimes "really" there are thousands of links there). A final but viable resort is to have a user log out, rename their ntuser.dat file in their profile. This will reset much of their profile to the default settings. Before they log out make sure you drag anything of value from their profile into their new environment or it will get wiped out when they log out. This includes, Favorites, and any files from their desktop. I highly suggest you try this on yourself first (you can back up your own profile to a workstation for a failsafe before you get started). This way you can check if it's a systematic problem or aggregate user data clogging the system. You might also want to check Network, Memory and CPU utilization on your server. Your lag times may be the server reaching a bottleneck threshold in one of these areas. Also, you might want to closely inspect your servers' network cable. It may be a possible culprit as well. I've seen cables that link and talk very well but crap out with any appreciable activity. A close look at your servers' event log should help if it's any of these. You may have to adjust your auditing though. Lastly, it might be worth your time to install a sniffer on your network and see if one of your workstations is broadcasting data due to Trojan, Filesharing, KaZaa or just users sucking up your available pipe listening to the radio on their workstations. I realize this is a lot of data but hopefully it will help you isolate some of your issues. -
The case design is distributed by many companies and for good reason. It is one of the most versatile and useful cases on the planet. I have several from Antec, One from Directron (A Matrix)and even a Chieftec model. The drive rails on all of them say Chieftec so there's your manufacturing answer. I don't care who distributed them as long as they are available.

If you place the actual javascript source URL into your HOSTS file you can avaoid downloading the scripts that trigger th popups altogether. I used to use pop-up stopper, AdSubtact and my firewall until I found my hosts file could do more. If anyone wants a copy, send me your email addy and I'll mail it to you. -
Freeware CommandLine Tools link/url, good for scripting
RobEubank replied to DS3Circuit's topic in Software
www.pukka.com has a program called netuser which is a great alternative to "net user" in that you can reset, unlock, change passwords and create accounts on remote machines. It's a very useful tool which doesn't have the limitations of the the net user coommand. It is shareware and not freeware but IMHO, it's a resource any system admin should have a copy of. A simple batch file can change the local admin password on you entire domain. command line response follows Quote: The syntax of this command is: NETUSER [-a|-c|-x|-f] UserName [/d:[T|F]] [/f:fullname] [/D:Home dir DRIVE] [/e:expires MMDDYYYY] [/g:description] [/h:home directory] [/m:[T|F]] [/p:password] [/q:profile] [/s:script] [/s:servername] [/u:[T|F]] [/w:[T|F]] NETUSER adds or updates the UserName user-id. -a Adds user-id to the system. Aborts if user exists. -c Updates a user-id based on the settings given. -f Finds a user by searching in the username, fullname and description for the text specified by UserName. -x Adds user-id to the system if it doesn't exist, otherwise changes the specified user-id. -r Register this tool with netuser -r code /d:[T|F] Sets user-id to DISABLED if TRUE, ENABLED if FALSE. /D:Drive letter sets DRIVE letter for the user (e.g. H . /e:expires specifies when the account will expire, format : MMDDYYYY /f:fullname Sets user's full name. When entering full-names & descriptions, use "quotes" to seperate spaces. /g:descript Sets user's description. /h:home drive Sets the drive to map the home drive letter to. /l:[T] Unlocks a locked out account. /m:[T|F] Sets the 'user must change password at next logon' switch. /p:password Sets the user-id password. /q:profile Sets the user's profile. /s:script Sets the user's Script file. /S:servername Determines the machine on which the user is to be administered. /u:[T|F] Sets the 'user cannnot change password' switch. /w:[T|F] Sets the 'password never expires' switch. NOTE: the /m:T and /s:T switches must not be used simultaneously. the /m:T and /w:T switches must not be used simultaneously. the /m:T switch doesn't work if user's password is set to never expire. XP Installation = UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME, HELP!!!!
RobEubank replied to CyberGenX's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I have had the same problem once and booted to the XP repair console with my CD and ran "chkdsk /r" It seemed to fix it for me. -
I have one Win98 machine (not SE) that has been running stable for nearly 4 years now. It's now my wife's machine. I spent a bit of time just after install tweaking the BIOS, IRQ and OS Registry. It has NEVER Crashed or Locked up regardless of what I've thrown at it. It's the only system on my network I'll never change OSs on. Besides, the printer doesn't have XP drivers. ASUS P3B-F (BX) Motherboard, 256 MB SDRAM, Viper V770 with Creative MPEG Decoder Daughter board for DVD, Creative Soundblaster Live!, 3Com 3C905TX and Adaptec SCSI Controller for the Scanner. It's not the fastest rock on the planet but unlike any other system I've ever seen, it is crashproof (so far). 8)

I've also known indexing to create a few pauses now and then. Have you checked your event viewer for obvious errors?
