I am having trouble accessing shares from a 2K and XP machine. The computer with the shares is running Win2k SP3, guest account is enabled. I shared all my drives with GUEST access, checked the boxes named full control, change and read under the Allow column. Now, when I try to access the shares, it says the following: "\\computername\drive is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access denied." I don't get why it's not working, it used to work back then.. it's so frustrating, the only way I can make the shares accessible is to set permissions to "Everyone". Much appreciated for any help.

Thanks for the replies, I enabled guest account and rebooted.. works without windowsXP asking me for login info. Seems like I have to restart for the settings to take effect.

Ok, here's the picture. I have 3 computers connected to a router with builtin switch. 2 of them are running Win2K Pro and one running XP SP1. I shared the every drive (root drive) on the Win2k machines. I mounted the drives on my XP computer. When I try to access the shares in the 2 computers running 2K on my XP machine... it always popups a screen asking for a username and password. Why do I have to do this? Is there a way to prevent it from prompting me for one? It gets annoying since some apps that I run require access to the other compuers on the LAN and doing this everytime at bootup. I set permissions on the 2k machines to "Everyone". When I access the other computers (XP and 2K) using the 2k machines, it doesn't prompt me for a username and password. It only asks me for username and password when I use the XP machine to access the shares in the 2k machines. Thanks in advance.

XP asking for password on network shares
bytezboy replied to bytezboy's topic in Everything New Technology
I tried enabling guest account but it says something like "access denied" when I go to the computer. I want to give FULL access to the drives. As I said before, only XP asks for a username and password so this is seems like a XP-related issue. When I access the shares on the XP and Win2K computer using a 2K box, I don't need to enter any username and password. -
Hey everyone, I got a problem I hope someone know of a solution or workaround. Whenever I try to use Scandisk or norton disk doctor to scan a drive, I get the following error: "The Operation System, or another process, currently has exclusive access to this drive, or some of its files. A repair can be schedules the next time you restart the system. ....Would you like to schedule a repair"? I know it's not a program I installed that is "locking" the drive or some of its files because when I reinstall Win2k from scratch and I run scandisk..it gives me this error. So this must be something within Windows that is causing this. I hate to restart the computer just to scan the drive, what happened to the old days of scanning the drive WITHIN windows? I hope this is possible, anyone know of a fix or workaround. Much appreciated. Thanks

Is there a way to lock the taskbar in win2000 like in WinXP. I installed IE 6.0 SP1 using service pack 3. Anyone know of a way?

Hello, how do I make Win2000 automatically end a task in x seconds when an application is not responding when I go to shutdown or restart? I remember in XP, it has a bar that counts down and ends the task automatically. Thanks in advance.

It didn't work on mine. Do you guys have to manually add the value by right clicking, new, DWORD value ? I did this and put a value of 0, rebooted and doesn't work ;( I chose Hexidecial for the value? Is that what I'm supposed to do? Thanks.

Hey all, I hope someone can help out with these. It's bugging me since I upgraded from 98SE to 2K ;( 1) You know in 98, when you sort by date..it doesn't separate folders and files on top of each other. In 2K, when your sort by date ascending..it'll place folders on top of the files, descending would put the files on top of the folders. I want the files and folders not to be separated. 2) Assuming every window on taskbar is NOT minimized. Minimizing an active window doesn't give focus to the window behind the one that is just minimized. I have to manually click on the window behind to put it in focus. This didn't happen in 98. Thanks.

I didn't have this problem until I installed service pack 3. Running the latest IE 6.0 SP1 with the cumulative update and SP3. I decided to install SP3 to complete my windows update and got this problem. IE would just hang there and I would have to close it, a prompt comes up telling me that it's not responding. This only happens whenever IE popus a window asking me for a username and password when browsing and FTP (prompting for a username and/or password, doesn't come up), the popup never shows up..IE simply hangs, stops responding. I tried reparing IE, instaling it, even using the regmon? utility to make sure all files are correct. I had this problem on another machine running the same OS and browser. I hope there's a fix available because I don't want to use Netscape everytime I need to go to a site that requires me to login. Thanks in advance.

IE 6.0 SP1 hangs when IE POPUPS a prompt for a username &
bytezboy replied to bytezboy's topic in Software
I waited for the prompt to come up and it didn't..waited for well over 2 minutes, had to end task as usual. Did you install all the critical updates and the win2000 updates or just the critical? -

Quote: Does it respond again after a while? I had this bug, and it's finally been sorted! With either SP3 or another of the recent Windows Updates. Outlook Express also took ages to load. P. I didn't wait to see if it'll respond, will do that and see if what happens. When you had this problem, did the window come up at all asking for username and password? -
Quote: Weeee i fixed the problem. It turned out that it is the Q329170 hotfix from winupdate that give these symptoms. I was told this at another forum where i asked too, and after uninstalling the hotfix windows shuts down in a matter of seconds like it used too. So nice that Microsoft releases "hotfixes" which decreases performance. Well thank you all for the help anyway. I just finished up[censored] my win2k and I'm having the same problem with the "saving your settigs" long pause when shutting down. I went into add/remove programs and didn't realize that I installed the Q329170 hotfix (I had previously installed the other Pre-SP4 hotfixes). My windows used to shutdown much quicker, gonna uninstall it. Thanks guys for the info.

I can't seem to get the card working with win2k sp3. Installed the beta drivers with no conflict. Everytime I play a file or movie using their pc-dvd dvd player, my computer would go into a blue screen saying IRQ_not less or equal (something like that). Then, I resorted to installing the Hollywood magic plus drivers version 2.0 for win2k, rebooted, went into device manager and it showed "device cannot start (code 10)" Anyone else had this problem before or know of a workaround? This is really pissing me off..this method worked when I was using XP, used the dvd station in XP. Btw, office xp was not present during the process. Thanks in advance.
