i guess this could be considered a configuration tweak but anyway, i used to have windows me installed. i could play mpeg2 video files. i did not have any dvd software installed either. what i had installed was real player, media player, divx, quick time. and pretty much any movie file i wanted to play worked now i have 2k and no mpeg2 files work. i think i have the same stuff installed too. is there any way to fix this?

i have an extra pc im working on that was really slow 200 mhz k6 socket 7 64mb ram and i decided to put on a voodoo3 to speed up 3d games since that should be pretty much all i need for quake 2 and 3 however heres what happened, i installed the 1.07 drivers and it worked okay in q3, about 15-25 fps i then decided to check voodoofiles for drivers and see if there was any better ones i got the latest voodoolizer or whatever driver and it didnt work, so i uninstalled it and went back to the 1.07 to my surprise it now didnt work either!! can anybody help me get it to work? for some odd reason the very very old drivers work but NONE of the newer version work now. would have the new driver installed some file that is causing the system to mess up, if so what would it be? i also had the same problem before on somebody elses computer with the drivers doing this but i got it to work eventually and i forgot what i did to fix it. if anybody knows please help.

for some odd reason, any game or prog sometimes causes massive slowdown on my athlon xp1700 system this includes all games and maya paint effects screensaver and running norton windoctor my pc randomly has problems-(not slow all the time) i used to have this installed vlatency_v019.zip for testing my vortex2 sound card but i uninstalled it after i got rid of it. i dont know if it's still installed or not, it did seem to cause pauses in unreal tournament, a lot of them too, like i was running it on 64 megs of ram. i have 512. could have been a combo of things too. anyway i reinstalled a lot of drivers/software and am not having the problem right now, but im not sure if it is completely gone as the problem randomly appears suddenly for no reason. anyway, whats most noticable is that the mouse lags horribly, the closest i can say as an example is running UT in 800x600 with a 486. and trying to use the menu with the mouse. i can say for a fact that this problem is not 1 my cpu (1700) 2 my ram (512mb DDR) also desktop effects run slow eg: transition effects other info: chipset via kt266 vid card rad9000-64mb os=win2k i also am running hard drives off of a pci raid card. could any bios settings screw up pci transfer stuff and cause my raid card to lag?

but if i install winXP, G0D forbid *screams* what if it doesnt work either? then im stuck with XP and then i will have to format to get back 2k heres another question besides my first one, how do you fix the master boot record file on a fat32 drive? if the recovery console dont work & the floppy disks dont either. -this was an old problem of my last config, my drive name was a long list of random characters eg A)(*#FJ#H$H#$Hdhh3e#!$@#%$ for some reason win2k still booted but wouldnt run scandisk i ended up formatting. i didnt delete the partitions though.

i have 120 gigs of stuff on my system. i dont really want to lose it all. also i have stuff in my overnet list that hasnt fully downloaded yet. the problem seems to appear with changing apps priority *sometimes*

HEY!, as to the question of ram, i have NEVER experienced slowdowns with 256 megs and since i now have double that and use the same programs i seriously DOUBT that windows is sucking a full 512 at all times plus i run o&o clevercache PRO. windows and all my programs normally never use over 180megs. in fact i have done this before with NO slowdown 1 burn a cd at 40x 2 play quake3 at hi-res and 4xaniso on 2x AA 3 listen to mp3 via FOObar its not a question of potential system performance a new 1700 system like mine SHOULD be able to do this too especially with ddr. before i could do this somewhat well with sdr, but it was overclocked. and i didnt burn cds. i didnt start having this problem either until i reinstalled windows maybe im missing some important file or something, but how would i know p.s. i dont have a windows cd, just cab files on my h-d its what i was given. I still wonder why UT has so much swapping tho esp since there is no reason at all for it. there is more than enough available ram. and its worked fine before. ive also heard from vortex2 websites that my mobo chipset causes a lot of problems and following their info i have tried to get a vortex2 to work in my system. sorta did get it working, but i uninstalled it and reinstalled windows. i swear this problem is like some sort of driver conflict or bad irq sharing or something similar, at least thats what it seems like. or since i did a reinstall maybe an old program is missing a file and is slowing my pc. or a hidden program is running in the background but ive tried to check for all this stuff too. also i used to have virtual pc before and uninstalled it but it still seems to popup in wierd places.(not the program but remnants of it) ack this is giving me a headache

HEY!!! i think i found the problem look for this program-katmouse then set the priority to "low" ehheheh i think that was the problem. but still i dont think it was that 100% of the time. <[just added]>-- this program was a big problem, but other programs slow down as well if i change priority <[just added]>-- (i set some useless programs i use to low priority to gain speed) and why would it cause system wide slowdown? thats a BIG mystery to me.

well i know that quicktime plays mpeg2 but it sukz for the most part i prefer nicemc for winamp2 or media player i have seen on several websites stuff about playing mpeg2/vcds in media player but i'm not really sure about what theyre talking about. anyway, ive reinstalled windows a couple times now, as well as my other software and it sort of works now aka-works, but not like it used to.

i have had 2k installed for quite some time now and have gone through several motherboards, videocards, soundcards etc there is a crapload of old drivers that are still in my windows dir and some even still load but wont work. is there a program out there that can clean up old driver software?
-
thanks for the info, i dont have a backup cd, so this is helpful also, i was also wanting to know how to clean out the dlls and other files put in my windows dir. is there any good cleaner programs that would do this for me? it would be a pain to do it manually

voodoo2 sli in win2k not working thats pretty much it. i have a whole bunch of beta drivers for it. the most i got to work was quake2 in 3dfx 60 some fps but the models where not visible, just shadows and walls quake3 gets 5 fps at start up screen and i think crashes when i run the game, either it crashed or it was taking too long to load but i exited it after about 3 minutes of waiting. these are 2 creative labs voodoo2's also, when i go into advanced properties in settings it crashes well, actually freezes. i have tried these drivers and got the same result v2-w2k-1.02.00-beta v2-wnt4-3.02 Voodoo2_Win2k-XP fastv2_2.0-2k is there anything out there that works? maybe there is a trick to installing these drivers because ive heard that some people have gotten them to work!

anybody know how to install the uk patch over the us version? (s1000to1004_uk.exe) why? i doesnt required the cds to play the game i heard. if you have ever played starsiege you know that there are 2 cds and it asks for one or the other of them at different intervals and it is a pain. and sometimes if it isnt in the first drive in alphabetical order it wont work. other methods of accomplishing the main objective (nocd) are appreciated too.

i'm pretty much looking for a replacement to this http://www.bubbleip.com/descr.html several other questions 1 is there a windows version of ipconfig in 2k? 2 information on what subnet mask and default gateway is 3 whats the easiest way to share files between 2 pc's over internet even if one is behind a firewall when it comes to networking, i know what i want to get done, just dont know how to do it.

yeah, but wicked gl is better than the minigl plus ever single minigl game does not work eg quake2 ut works dont know why also just to make sure it wasnt 2k i tried both in 98 same problem could it be a conflict with the mobo? is the bus speed too fast? also i copied the 3dfxvgl.dll from the 98 driver into the quake3 folder. i used that instead of wickedgl and it worked faster. sometimes works, sometimes doesnt. quake2 eventually crashes if i dont use gl on the voodoo2 instead of glide i also tested both cards in sli, and by themselves separately just to see if it was a hardware problem. same stuff.

just bought a athlon XP1700 + mobo 114$ also 512ddr 80$ big improvement from 256 sdram and p3 1ghz dont overspend thats all i can say. its never worth it. if you already have a decent athlon XP or p4 stick with it at least until the new athlons or pentium chips come out. or get nforce2

found this driver Voodoo2.tar.gz the control panel no longer freezes and i used wicked gl for quake3 works perfect however wickedgl for quake2 says "not a wicked3d voodoo2 board (glide2x.dll) board with multitextureing required, use the other version of the driver for boards with 1 texture unit" it then runs quake2 fine. thats kinda stupid. is there a way to tell if its really running sli mode? and if i have the 12 mb version boards? also, why doesnt the default quake 3dfx driver work? ps quake3 runs 800x600 max texture/geometry at 60 fps thats pretty good for a voodoo2 setup besides voodoo2's run 60 fps constant. unlike other boards that go as low as 30 in some places, but then go up to 100+ i just dont get why it didnt work in the first place! and why glide is having problems.

i bought a hard drive about a year ago from tiger direct i think it was a seagate 60 gig it already has some bad sectors on it. but ive not had any real horrible problems with it yet ive decided to get another hard drive for more space and i probably wont get the same make as the one i have now for obvious reasons (im not checking it now, dont want to bother unscrewing the case and unplugging all the wires) what is the most reliable 80 gig hard drive with the least problems. eg noise, durability, bad sectors, etc i dont want a repeat disaster of this hard drive i have now. about 20megs of bad sectors. dont know why it still works......

Motherboard 09/21/2000-694X-686A-MB694AC-00 VIA VT82C694X Apollo Pro133A Chipset BIOS Properties: BIOS Type Award Modular Award BIOS Type Award Modular BIOS v6.00PGN Award BIOS Message MB694A Ver 1.0b 09/21/2000 System BIOS Date 09/21/00 Video BIOS Date 02/07/03 BIOS Manufacturer: Company Name Phoenix Technologies Ltd. i got this info from some info utility but i dont know how to find a new bios or flash it apparently i need a new bios because this one is over 2 years old and has problems with some agp stuff being enabled sometimes know any good bios websites? what would i search for in them?

http://www.esupport.com/biosagent/index.cfm i just found this.... maybe it can help. im not sure, but i think it's not a free service? it just seems like theyre selling a product but i dont see anywhere where it clearly says if they do or not

why not just buy the voodoo2 off ebay? most people sell it around 5$ im getting one myself because im getting really tired of using slow/crappy emus that never work. also some emus out there charge money for full version its probably cheaper in the long run to have the actual thing! i think one of the 2k drivers only has glide support, so it shouldnt make all your games use the voodoo2 for 3d acceleration. just glide. since its a pci addon card, you can have it coexisting with a radeon 9700!! sounds easier than emulators, no? oh well, just my 2 cents.
-
i got it to work.... but odd thing is, it doesnt detect direct3d !! i have a friend who has win ME who has it working??? ps i had it installed with 98, upgraded to 2k maybe thats why it works
-
lol thanks i was looking around earlier and thats what i found but i wasnt sure if it was it. especially since my mobo supports i think a fsb of 150
