    linux installation

Hehe, GhostSong, go back and look at who posted what. kapoorrohit, those links I posted will help you set up Linux on your laptop. But be forewarned, you have the same problem as I. The Radeon chip in the 900 series is completely unsupported. It will, however, work with the generic VESA driver for XFree86. Good luck!

    Swapping music files

I almost forgot. After you run mke2fs, mount the new partition and move all your music over to it! Have fun!

    Swapping music files

You can either add a new physical drive or shave some free space off an existing partition. In either case, parition the free space as a FAT32 filesystem and run 'mke2fs /dev/hdXX' for the new partition. Add an fstab entry and have it mount to your music directory. When you boot into Windows, it'll be drive D. HTH!

    DvD Rip Problem

The de facto standard DVD ripper is, hands down, dvd::rip (http://freshmeat.net/redir/dvdrip/20118/url_homepage/dvdrip) Assuming you have none of these, you'll need: 1. XviD video codec: http://www.xvid.org OR DivX5: http://www.divx.com/divx/linux/ DivX5 looks a little better, DixV is open source. It's up to you 2. avifile: http://avifile.sourceforge.net 3. Transcode: http://freshmeat.net/redir/transcode/15968/url_homepage/transcode 4. Then you'll need to get the Gtk perl module: 'perl -MCPAN -e shell' go through the setup process. When you get to the perl prompt, type: install Gtk Let it do its thing and install any supporting modules it needs. When done, download and compile: 5. dvd::rip: http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/ Then do 'dvdrip' and you should be set!

    drivers

In general, mice don't need drivers. If it's a PS/2 mouse, you'll be fine with a default xf86config setup.

    ATI Mobility Radeon U1

The Presario 2800 series uses Radeon Mobility M7 chips, which work fine in XFree86. The 2100 series uses the Radeon Mobility U1 (aka. Radeon IGP 320M) chips, which are completely unsupported. I have sent an email to ATI's developer relations address: devrel@ati.com I am urging all readers of this post to PLEASE email ATI and ask them to either: 1. Release the technical specs to third-party developers sich as XI Graphics, DRI, or the XFree86 project or 2. Develop their own proprietary drivers as nVidia has done. If there is enough POLITE outcry, there may be some results. Please, if you have 60 seconds, fire them off a courteous email and then post a reply. Thank you all for your help!

    ATI Mobility Radeon U1

I've just discovered that the Radeon Mobility U1 chip is one and the same as the Radeon IGP 320M chip. So this may help in identifying the exact hardware in question. Any news on this front? Thanks!

Fatal server error: no screens found However, I can run X using the "radeon" driver if I do so with the following lines in my /etc/X11/XF86Config file: Section "Device" Identifier "* Generic VESA compatible" Driver "radeon" ChipID 0x4242 Option "AGPMode" "4" Option "noaccel" VideoRam 65536 # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate EndSection Obviously, this does not help me too much as the acceleration is what I'm after. If I comment out the Option "noaccel" line, X starts but only the bottom half of the screen is displayed, and then the whole thing locks up. I've tried DRI, assuming I've installed it correctly, it doesn't work either. I'll take any suggestions here. I'd even be happy with "it doesn't work now but xxx release of xxx software will support it in the future." Any information will help. Thanks!
