  1. Hey all, Does anyone know if any PCI Express motherboards will be coming out that can take a socket 478 Northwood Pentium 4 CPU and [preferably] PC3200 (DDR400) Dimms? I've only ever seen ones that take the new LGA775 socket P4's. TIA

LAN PROBLEM IN WINDOWS 2000 PRO

IIRC, a mask of 255.255.255.254 is invalid for a class C address (you'd end up with 126 subnets but NO hosts). If you didn't want to use the 'very common' 255.255.255.0, use 255.255.255.224 instead, you'll have 6 subnets with 30 hosts on each. This is irrelevant anyway, as it probably has nothing to do with ganeshkumar_kgk's original query.

Creating an NT 4.0 Bridge between two network subnets

NO BIGGIE THOUGH, because here is the registry hack needed: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters Change IPEnableRouter to 1 decimal or hex (does not matter, equates to same value) That's the one, well remembered Alec. Very strange why Microsoft took out the GUI based access to this setting (and many others I suspect). Stranger still why this hack works in the 9x versions of Windows. It would save loads of money for a lot of people who bought Windows server just for this purpose.

Creating an NT 4.0 Bridge between two network subnets

Wahay, multi-homing. Not used it in a long while. This is actually really easy to do in NT Server. I've not used NT for a while (so apologies if my directions aren't great) but open Network configuration from Control Panel (I think), go to the protocols tab and bring up the properties of the 'TCP/IP Protocol'. Then select the 'Routing' tab and you'll see a check box to enable IP forwarding. That should do what you're after. Incidentally, this can be achieved in any version of Windows (including 9x) by a registry hack.

Two Small Biz Server 2000 questions

Can you set up a Win2k server as a member server to handle the TS clients? And how many clients per server is advised? Yes, typically Windows Terminal Services is installed on a member server, and not on a domain controller. This relieves the domain controller of the additional activities that are required. You also normally find that WTS servers are often better spec'ed than run-of-the-mill domain controllers. Based on figures quoted on the release of Windows 2000 Server, you'll need to provide between 4mb and 8mb (on top of the base RAM requirement) for each terminal services session. Processor speed also has a large impact of the responsiveness of the sessions, most recommend that you plump for a dual-processor server as a minimum. Essentially try and get the best possible processor(s) with as much RAM as you can afford. Also, be aware that the licensing scheme for WTS is above and beyond that required for Windows 2000 Server. WTS requires a seperate Windows 2000 Server license, normal Client Access Licenses (CAL) for that server and additional specific WTS CALs per seat. But the good news is that (AFAIK), Windows 2000 & XP Pro allow you to access a WTS server without having to have a client CAL. Hope this helps.

Only now has broadband filtered through to the masses (at a moderately high expense). Even so, there are many places in the UK that have to survive on dialup. Britons tend to have a less enthusiastic attitude towards the internet overall, moreso than anywhere else in Europe (let alone the rest of the world). I still know many people who are afraid to use their credit cards for purchases over the internet no matter how much I champion the benefits. Otherwise, I was having a general moan about the usual things; you know, high taxes, the disgustingly high price of fuel (and you Americans moan about your prices ), state of the roads... the list could go on, but that would be for another forum.

    Your fave Star Wars Movie?

Yeah, let's steer it back on course. Originally posted by Waffler: Quote: BTW, you are all wrong! No-one should have a favourite Star Wars movie-because they aren't that good!!!(Yes I am including the 'originals'!) Episodes 1 & 2 had many critics, and rightly so... The storylines were, imo, fairly weak, a majority of the characters are obnoxious and poorly written, many scenes are cheesy(Yes Lucas can write okay, but NOT direct very well) and overall, the films are not really worthy of their box-office status. Having said that, I still feel they are decent enough films and some of the fight scenes are truly great. HOWEVER, Episodes 4, 5, & 6 were just the same! The cheesy characters and scenes, the downright shameful continuity errors and most of all-Chewbacca! (Please don't get me started on that damn Wookie!) Although, as I mentioned above, these are still credible films and worth a watch every now and then. The Following is Fact Star Wars 4, 5 & 6 were last generations LOTR trilogy. In years to come, many will still rave about the LOTR trilogy but fail to see that the 'films aren't actually that great(Tolkiens writing is a masterclass though-much like Lucas' original scripts were better). Then later, The Hobbit will come out (a prequel just like Eps 1 &2) and the critics will hate it because it won't have the same impact as the original trilogy. This will mirror the exact reaction of the Star Wars films. Some harsh words there Waffler. But to some extent I'll have to agree with you. Don't get me wrong, I am an avid Star Wars fan (probably too much) but since watching the LOTR trilogy (a superior trilogy if you ask me) my opinion about 'the greatest films ever made' (not my words) have changed greatly. My favourite is Empire. Simply because it felt more like a groan-ups film. Darker, more sinister subject matter, character development and a much, much better script than 'A New Hope'. This will probably upset a few people, but I really don't think that Lucas is a very good writer/director. The success of the original film was based on the fantastic visuals (then unheard of), after all how many kids at the time would have understood the subtle meanings behind Lucas' story. And honestly, I don't think he should have directed the prequels either. But it's not all gloom for George though. He did at least push the envelope for visual effects (although everyone else has since caught up). After all, where would we have been today without the breakthroughs made by ILM during the early eighties? But everyone is used to flashy special effects these days, Episode 3 will have to offer much more than CGI stormtroopers to become a hit IMO. BTW - Spaceballs has been out on DVD (here in the UK) for the last couple of years.

Last I saw of him (actually heard!), he was a character from Disney's god awful Brother Bear. If there is a new Spaceballs film, Moranis should definitely reprise Dark Helmet.

Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow: Anyone go see it yet?

You're probably best leaving it that way. The're not the worst films in the world by any means (they do have their moments) but IMHO they worked so hard on the visuals they forgot about the story. The Doom 3's of the film world you might say (christ, I'm in a bashing mood at the moment)... roll on Episode 3. Saying that, I do want to see Sky Captain. Hopefully they'll get the mix right this time.

Windows XP does a pretty good job of discovering new hardware however (in the case of a complete system change) so Stedolan may be able to get away with it just this once.

    Boot problems

Hi Stedolan, Are there any specific error messages displayed? Also, are you ghosting the image back onto a hard drive that is in the same 'position' as on the original ghosted machine; the first hard disk on the first disk controller for example? If not then you'll receive a STOP error as Windows won't be able to locate the boot partition.
