Hello back. HIVECLS.INF is an essential component during the Windows XP setup routine. It basically creates all the Class entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE in the registry. Sounds like you may have a duff installation CD. Are you able to try a different disc?

Also, if you want your XP machine to automatically login on boot, type; control userpasswords2 into the run dialog and you have the option 'Users must enter a name and password to use this computer' uncheck it and you're away (this saves having to install TweakUI).

PCI Express motherboards with S478 P4 support
ross_aveling replied to ross_aveling's topic in Slack Space
Quote: I figured some company would do this, I'm really glad to see it's from Asus, my preference for motherboards Yep, the Asus brand is a pretty good, although I'm sure we'll see boards from almost every other manufacturer soon. Quote: I do have to mention one caveat however, this has to do with Intel as they will stop producing *all* there Socket 478 CPU's shortly to force everyone into purchasing there Socket-T CPU's instead That the thing, I think that you'll be hard pushed to find socket 478 P4's even now. But, as I have a pretty decent P4 (2.4c) with PC3200 RAM the only thing that I need to upgrade at the mo is my video card (a GeForce 4200Ti) so I'll be getting a new PCI-e one along with one of these MBs and hopefully I'll be alright for another year . -

Found this MB from Asus. Great for those who are happy with their CPU/RAM and just want to get a PCI-e video card for future proofing. -
The actual location of the Recycle Bin in Windows 2000 & XP is 'RECYCLER', ie. C:\RECYCLER. Remember that the files within this folder are hidden. Is the Recycle Bin not working in Windows?

Glad to hear it's all sorted. Quote: Hopefully you can remember to come back any time you have any questions, overall, I think this is a great online community! Here, here! I may not post that much (you guys seem to have things under control ) but this is possibly the best message board I've visited.

Well, I've just found out that the current download only works with Windows XP (and not 2000 which my work PC uses). I am assuming that MS will offer version 10 for earlier versions of Windows at a later date. I wouldn't have thought Microsoft will restrict it to XP only....... EDIT - SuperSite for Windows' Paul Thurrott has written a very comprehensive review of WMP10 if anyone's interested. unable to login to windows xp home! Help!!
ross_aveling replied to john1221's topic in Everything New Technology
I can't explain why your machine is behaving like it is, but if you need to reset your Administrator's password there is light at the end of the tunnel. You can use a Linux bootdisk to reset all passwords back to blank. It's a bit of a long (and scary) read so take your time. Essentially, create the floppy boot disk (ignore the stuff about SCSI drivers, unless your disks are SCSI ones of course), boot up and follow the on-screen options. I have never had to use this procedure, so some other members may be able to help you further. Hope this can help you at all. -
I'm afraid you're in a world of pain trying to chuck an of-the-shelf motherboard into your Dell case. AFAIK, the connections on the power supply are proprietary for a start. You could perhaps get a new motherboard and a new case for close to the price of what Dell wants to charge you for a replacement board. You could use re-use your current drives and graphic card (I am assuming that these are not on-board devices in the 8100). And at a push re-use the memory (as long as it's not of the RamBus variety that is). Can you supply the specifications of the machine?

WMP has never really been that bad a product IMO but I've always been a fan of Winamp, esp the latest version. I prefer the layout of Winamp and with the amount of plug-in's you can get there is practically nothing that you can't do with it. Saying that, I'm gonna try out WMP10 on my work PC today and see what it offers. I'll post back anything that stands out.

teqguy, Quote: You guys are still disregarding the fact that the drive is already active! And you're disregarding the fact that neske states that this machine is 'new', so having a blank unformatted drive is a distinct possibility. Quote: PnP automatically initializes hardware and makes it ready for use upon installation. True to a certain extent. But with new disks, they remain un-initialised until you specifically initialise and partition them in 'Disk Management'. Windows doesn't know how you'd like the disk partitioned and which drive letters to assign. Quote: His hard drive is already mounted and available. If it wasn't it would still appear in My Computer as an unpartitioned, unformatted drive... unless appropriate Policies were set or a registry entry was missing. This isn't true. Only active hard drive partitions (be them basic or dynamic) and removable storage appear in 'My Computer'. Quote: The drive just needs to be reinstalled via Device Manager to repair a missing registry entry. neske has said that the drive appears in in his 'hardware profile', so Window has recognised the hardware. As far as I can see, all evidence points to what I have already suggested. Every person can give their two cents can't they? Hi Alec, Yeah it's a bit of change not to have jumpers anymore, it takes away a bit of the 'fun'. I'll suspect we'll miss them eventually, lol!! I've just jumped onto the SATA wagon myself, having bought a shiney new Seagate Barracuda 160gb disk (pretty good kit, I bet it pales into significance compared to your Raptors tho ). And why, oh why, did they have to change the power connector from the standard molex? There must be a reason! R

Assign a static IP address without a network connection
ross_aveling replied to james1977's topic in Networking
Thanks for the shout adamvjackson, that's a good link to know. -
JUMPERS... what are you guys talking about? Serial ATA doesn't use jumpers anymore! . This may sound stupid, but if it's a new drive, have you initialised and partitioned it in 'Disk Management'?

Installing the Microsoft Loopback Adapter will give you what you want. You may as well disable your current network card in Device Manager. -
Morning all, Found this AWE64 driver for Windows 2003. Hope it helps.

Glad to hear you got it sorted. One to remember me thinks.

Whilst I'd agree with n99nyrwg and recommend that you don't use auto login in Windows Server, it can still be done however. Go to the run dialog box (Start, Run) and type this; control userpasswords The familiar 'Users & Passwords' dialog from Win2K Pro appears and you're then be able to uncheck the 'Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.' option. Click Apply and you'll be asked to supply the login credentials that Windows will use from then on. Incidentally, this 'trick' can also be used on XP and Windows Server 2003 machines; just use 'control userpasswords2' instead.

I've just taken a read about InPage stop errors here and it appears that whilst it's primarily a disk driver issue, other things such as bad RAM may cause it. You say that you've checked the machine setup and everything appears fine but you may still want to try a different stick of RAM or run a memory test just to rule out that possibility. If you can verify that the memory is ok, I'd suggest that you make sure that your PC's BIOS is up-to-date. You can download the newest version here and also give the latest IDE drivers a go as well (if you haven't already done so). Hope this helps.

A complete long shot, but are you installing XP from a DVDR? I only ask as I have been trying to install some software from my own mastered DVD onto a laptop (with XP already installed) and I get the same InPage error. I have checked the disk for write errors and it is fine. Seems some of the older drives have trouble reading DVDR's. You never know.

Sorry to say guys, but I have never received any spam on my main ISP email account. It's probably because I have quite an un-common surname (here in the UK anyway). I'm always careful who I register my address with anyway and so far have been lucky up to now. Incidently, my girlfriend does get quite a lot of spam but BT Yahoo! have greatly improved their spam protection and it manages to identify [and quarantine] every single one. Pretty impressive.

WIN ME, The device manager displays 96Mb instead of 128 Mb RAM!
ross_aveling replied to Philip's topic in Legacy OS
Hi Philip, How much ram does your machine display on booting up (during the post process)? If it says 96mb then one of your memory sticks has paddled up s**t creek. What's the age of the machine and do you know the configuration of your memory (ie, how many sticks of ram you have). -
You can get loads of info here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/vbs.loveletter.a.html The section about removing it is near the bottom. Good luck

Sampson is spot on with this one. If you really wanted to do it the way you describe, you can buy a Wireless Access Point [that has no wired routing features at all] such as this, http://www.netgear.com/products/prod_details.php?prodID=170&view=hm. Simply plug it into your existing hub. I am not recommending you get this Netgear model, it's just an example of what's out there. But I suspect that the price difference between a pure Access Point and one integrated with a router/hub is probably minimal. Why not get a new router/hub with wireless and replace your current hub completely; much tider!
