Assuming that mixer.exe is designed to be minimized to the notification tray, bring up the properties of the shortcut you created in the Startup programs group. On the 'Shortcut' tab, change the Run setting from 'Normal Window' to 'Minimized'. If it doesn't minimize to the tray, then it's not designed to.

Here is a free ASP based intranet site from Digger Solutions: http://www.diggersolutions.com/products_ios.asp I've looked at it briefly and it seems pretty good. If you want to expand on it, Digger do addon's (at a small price) for all sorts of things. You can always add to it yourself if you know how. Might be worth a look though.

Generally, I've heard pretty good things about SP2 and although I'd normally make the jump and install it now (release candidate an' all), I am going to wait until it goes gold, slipstream it and take it from there. The new improved firewall is the biggest plus point, but the first thing I'll do will be to turn that off as I have the necessary security on my server. I also don't have any need for IE's new ad pop up/blocking as I use Firefox. I think that Microsoft is targeting SP2 towards home users, especially those with dial-up. They really don't want to get involved with the technical aspects of firewalls (I've always liked the no nonsense approach with the ICS firewall - everything out, nothing in) which suits my girlfriend's computer 'experience' perfectly. I know that some would call this half arsed protection, but you don't want to be hassled by every non-savvy user asking if they should let NTOSKRNL.EXE access the internet! But anyhoo, having these features, plus all the latest windows updates rolled into one can only be good news... after all, has there been a 'bad' service pack to date!

Maybe I was thinking of when you use a dedicated 'uplink' port on a more advanced switch (although I know that the newer higher end models can auto sense what cable is being used and adjust as necessary). I think that if you've got the gigabit hardware in place why not. I bought an ABIT IS7 motherboard (great bit a kit BTW) which advertised that it had 100 Mbit LAN on board, but did in fact come integrated with an Intel GigaBit LOM nic. It was purchased nearly a year ago and is just a normal desktop board. I think you'll be hard pushed to find new M/Bs these days that don't come with gigabit networking. Even though fast ethernet (100 Mbit) is pretty quick, I still hate sitting around waiting for the odd divx movie to transfer from my server. P.S - I've just checked pricing for a 1000 Mbit NIC and you can pick one up from dabs.com for an amazing 13.50 pounds . For that money, you'd be stupid not to go for it.

If you're worried that your system may be open to attack, hop over to Shields Up at https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 and let it run a test. It will tell you if you are in the green and if not, which ports/services you need to close. It has a lot of good info about firewalling as well.

Yep, that COA is proof that you own a licensed copy of XP (having a physical installation CD means nothing). When you come to install XP, make sure that you have an OEM version of the installation CD for the edition printed on the COA (Home or Pro). They use slightly different product keys, ie. retail vs oem and won't accept the 'other' key. If you haven't got an OEM CD, you can usually find these cheap on eBay, but make sure that you get one that installs on any hardware as some are tailored to a particular vendor - Dell for instance - and apparently won't install on non-Dell gear. Also note that OEM installations still need activating. I am pretty sure (until I am corrected ) that borrowing a friend's disc and installing from that (even taking a copy) still keeps you in the green. The COA is the important bit.

I would advise that you steer clear of ISDN if possible. ISDN is an older technology that is being superseded by newer broadband services like DSL and cable. Speed wise, ISDN offers a maximum connection of 128kbs, but if you’d like the ability to make voice phone calls at the same time, the speed is reduced to 64kbs (AFAIK, you will always be guaranteed to connect at these speeds). ADSL or cable commonly connect at around 512kbs. You would probably need to have an engineer visit your site to install additional telephony hardware and a special ISDN modem (more commonly called a 'Terminal Adapter') would need to be purchased for connection to your PC (these are normally internal). Cost wise (at least here in the UK) you need to pay for installation, the TA/modem and an additional monthly ISDN fee. You also still need to pay for the phone call to connect to the internet (voice call charges remain the same). IMHO, the extra cost, along with the reletively slow connection speed (a ‘normal’ modem connects at up to 56kbs after all) makes ISDN only suitable for businesses who can afford it, or for those who have no way of getting a broadband service in their area. If you would like to explore alternative shells, I remember there being an official [Microsoft] beta release of the Win95 style interface for NT 3.51 which may allow you to run programs that use the taskbar notification tray. I don't know how advanced it was but it may help you. You can do what you want with it. Drop to a Command Prompt in XP and type 'prompt /?' (without the quotes) for a list of what you can do. Saying that, the greater than sign (>) is reserved for the system so you won't be able to use that on it's own. Just typing 'prompt' will reduce it to the current driver letter. If you would like to make the change for all Command Prompt sessions (run by command.com), add your prompt command to the AUTOEXEC.NT file under the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder.

If you liked the Ultima Underworld games you could try Arx Fatalis. It has a good storyline with excellent graphics and is essentially UW3 in all but the name. It's a year or two old so you may be able to pick it up on the cheap. Edit - Doh, just noticed Pr-man's already played it.

Hi All, Having used Netware for the past few years we are planning to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 in the coming weeks. We have a number of HP LaserJets (each with their own JetDirect print server) currently attached to their respective print queues on the Netware server. My question is will the setup be similar on Windows Server, ie 'queue to print server' and will we need to buy extra CALs to accommodate them (as with Netware). I know that we could just print directly to the printers using their IP address but we would like to be able to spool and hold print jobs on the new Windows server. I remember this happening when a 'Generic Text Only' printer driver had been installed. It's worth checking I suppose, but it's strange that the fonts are listed in other Office apps.

An ingenious use of a .scr file if there ever was one XP comes with a command line based utility called SHUTDOWN.EXE which you should be able to use to restart the machine. BTW - Why would you want to restart the machine after 15 minutes of inactivity?

Ctrl, Alt + Del is always used on the local machine. You can send the same key combination to the remote machine by using Ctrl, Alt + End. If you did want to disable this prompt at login, you can do so in the Local Security Policy for the server.

Hi All, The company I work for is considering subscribing to the Microsoft Action Pack. Whilst I understand that the server products include 10 client access licenses, would it violate the EULA if we were to purchase retail '5 CAL' upgrade packs (for Windows Server 2003) so that all 20 of our workstations can join the domain? I've read through the Action Pack terms and conditions and it doesn't mention this scenario at all! Personally, I'd be surprised if it were allowed but I would like a firm Yes or No from you pro's so I can go back to my IT manager and break the bad news to him .
