Quakecon 2003 DOOM3 and Call of Duty

I read the article at www.tomshardware.com about Call Of Duty Looks amazing it would be cool if it was ported to linux. As far as doom3 goes I hope It does not go OTT and loose on playability. For example UT2003 has really good grafics but the grafics engine lacks something, I cant put my finger on it. Its kinda like the difference between Vinyl and cd.(quake3 and UT2003). The quake3 engine just seems smoother and more playable... This is just me.

    UT2003

Ok the first thing u have to do is give it executable permission. for this open a console and move to the folder that contains your UT2003demo then type Code: chmod 555 UT003whatever.sh.bin once u have done that to execute it type:- Code: ./UT2003whatever.sh.bin If all goes well , by this I mean all your hardware is compatible it should start. If not post the error messages here.

    View pak files

have u tried changing the file extension? Code: mv whatever.pak whatever.pk3 I use unzip to open up all the quake3 engine bassed games I am not sure what games use plain .pak extension. Eventhough what is most likely is what u say about it bieng a split file. That or it is corrupted.

    Medal Of Honor

Thanks relick I also tried the installer out of curiosity. but It would'nt recognize cd1 (it starts with 2 all ok) maybe I did something wrong. Most likely it is due to the fact I am using the spanish version. No big deal I had allready installed manually, I played all the way through the single player campaign, no major issues, I found it rock solid.(apart from sound) cant wait to play spearhead!

    mp3 to wav application

Does anybody know of a cd burning or other aplication that can convert mp3 to wav so that they can be burned to a disk, and listened to on any cd player. kinda like what easy cd creator can do. I have found a script but it can only do one file at a time which is a bit of a drag. I am not knoledgable enough to write a script that can do multiple tracks. but it would be a valid solution. Thanks

  13. the drivers for video cards are in the xfree package. if you do not know the video card you have you can look in /proc/pci anyhow the generic drivers should work try vesa or vga. edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 so that the driver you need is placed in the device section as follows. Code: Driver "vesa"
  14. quake3 runs natively in linux just download the patch from www.idsoftware.com

    Boycott wine/wineX

You are right the article is propaganda and people should be allowed to make there own choices in internet. Nevertheless this does not mean that what is said in the article is false.

I need your advice and opinions plz!

If you are going to run a server forget about using X window enviroment. It is completely unnecessary. Of course an advanced knoledge of shell will be necessary, but all come's at a price in this case the price is time. As far as remote control goes if you are behind a firewall on a local home network it is perfectly acceptable to use telnet. If this is not the case you can remotely administer the server via ssh. I agree with Zuti Gentoo is a good choice if you want to learn. And by far has the best support. Otherwise go with something like debian.

    Nvidia Configuration

If your second monitor is a tv which it appears to be you cannot use any resolution above 800x600 depending on exact card model some do support 1024x768. try in:- Yanc > MetaModes Values for 1st monitor 1024x768 @ 800x600 Values for 2nd monitor 800x600 @ 640x480 Edit This is a config that I have tryed and works with a 19" monitor and a tv Code: Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "NVidia" BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce (fbdev)" Driver "nvidia" Option "DPMS" Option "TwinView" Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-50" Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "60" Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024 @1280x1024, 800x600 @800x600" Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B" Option "TwinViewOrientation" "LeftOf" Option "NoLogo" "1"EndSection

    Nvidia Configuration

you are missing this line in your Device section Code: Option"TwinViewOrientation" "LeftOf" As far as the Meta mode goes add:- 1280x1024, 1280x1024 (if you are using 19" monitors). 1024x768, 1024x768 (if you are using 17" monitors). So in Yanc > MetaModes Values for the 1st monitor 1280x1024 @ 1024x768 Value for 2nd monitor 1280x1024 @ 1024x768 please read README ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-4363/README.txt

    Nvidia Configuration

Code: cat /roc/driver/nvidia/version this will show driver version here is mine as an example. Code: bash-2.05b$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/versionNVRM version: NVIDIA Linux x86 NVdriver Kernel Module 1.0-3123 Tue Aug 27 15:56:48 PDT 2002GCC version: gcc version 3.2.2 the driver version is in this case 3123 At a quick glance at your XF86Config-4 you are missing a line in the "Device" section. Code: Option "TwinView" You are also missing the config of your second monitor. Configuring XF86Config by hand is hard for those with little experience. I advise you to install a program called "yanc" http://yanc.sourceforge.net/index-en.html Its a grafical interface for configuring the XF86Config-4 file, very intuitive. Once you have this file properly configured I advise that you do 2 things. first make the file read only by typing as root Code: chmod 444 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and secondly make a security copy of it on a disk. I last piece of advice NEVER NEVER execute Xfree as root.
